Sure

In your picture there.  the middle 392 is a really early one.  The earliest ones had some differences - mostly very small things that I guess Benjamin decided they wanted to change.  some other differences are the receiver is a larger diameter - and the front part of the receiver is longer.  Also, you probably noticed that on that gun, the bolt doesn't turn all the way down when closed.  As to WHY its black.  who knows.  its just the way they started out.  Its still brass though right?  they probably realized there was nothing to be gained by blackening that piece of brass.  If its not brass, then they probably realized it would be better to make that piece out of brass. 

Also, one slight correction to your first post in this thread  

the change from the soldered valve to the cartridge valve took place in 1995 not 1997.  You can see in your image that difference in the spacing of the stock bolt nut on your '96.  That one has the cartridge valve.     You were correct though that the switch to the trigger pack happened in 1997.  The name change from P to PA 'more or less' coincides with the valve change.
