target question

Several years ago, I bought a knock-down FT target for practice. Work got in the way, and I just never got around to it. Now I'm retired and have time for these more important things, so I'll start practicing, maybe try a match this summer. My question, this is a squirrel target with a 1.5" kill zone, and I assume this would be used at only the longest ranges, maybe 40 yards minimum?

I use mine at 30yds but you can easily make a reducer plate for 1 inch or half inch for closer ranges.

Target placement and numbering
Targets shall be placed at distances of between 9 metres and 50 metres from the firing line and according with the following table.

Targets (Max distance)   15mm   25mm   40mm

Although Mercury’s information is correct, note that the KZ sizes and distances listed only apply to Worlds matches and to countries that have adopted those rules.   Our AAFTA rules are a bit different.  Our rules state that any target beyond 45 yards must have a full size 1.5 inch KZ or greater. Also, no target can be greater than a 50 Troyer rating.  Check out the AAFTA website for more details.

1.5" targets can be used at any distance for free-position shots, even close shots.

50T max is correct, but I believe that the 1.5" after 45 yards is for GP matches only. For instance, a 1.125" or 1.25" target at 50 yards can be used in an AAFTA compliant match, just not a GP match.
