Crosman pumpers were a let down.

I recently got my son a 760 for his 7th birthday.  He had a Daisy 35 that sucked from last year so he has been shooting my Marauders and a Sheridan 2260MB.  His safety and gun handling skills are solid I have been super proud of him.  I decided I would get him a 760 this year so he could have something to plink with at 10 or 15 yards in our shorter lane in the backyard while I do yard work.  I got one around 1990 or so when I turned 9 I think and it shot fantastic, in fact I still have it and it still shoots great after a cup seal replacement.  Something he can pump, load pellets and get reasonable accuracy with.  Don't get me wrong I was not expecting Marauder or 2260 accuracy, I was completely content with an inch at 10 yards and maybe 15.  I was blown away at how horrible it shot, I didn't even care about the cheap feel, so long as it shot ok.  Tumbling pellets at 9 and 10 yards and 2-3 inch groups were the standard with 10 different .17 cal pellets.  Tried from 3 to 10 pumps with all pellets.  I get that its only 25 bucks but what a POS.

So I am rolling through wally yesterday for some stuff and see the Legacy 1000 for 44 bucks, rifled barrel.  The rifled barrel I figured would help a lot and I decided to get him a birthday redo present.  While he was at school I "sighted" it in and was dumbfounded again.  Warped stock sweeping to the right and about the same accuracy.  Tumbling pellets at 10 yards with 2 inch groups being about the norm.  I did manage a few 1 inch groups at 10 yards but they were few and far between during a 2 hour session.  I couldn't believe how many pellets this rifle tumbled.  Horrendous.  Crosman needs a serious revamp in this line, up the price a little if you need to but fix it because these things are sure fire way for someone to hate shooting.  I returned the Legacy 1000 first thing this morning.

The Legacy 1000 I bought shot fine.  The flimsy receiver was an issue because I wanted to be able to put a receiver sight or scope on it.  I ordered a metal 2100b receiver from crosman and am happy with it now. For an 35 dollar rifle and 25 dollars in extra parts from crosman I am happy with it.   It even likes those cheap Crosman Destroyer pellets better than H+N FTT or boxed Crosman premiers I keep around for the field target rifles.

Glad it worked out for you.  I pondered exchanging the Legacy figuring I had to have gotten a lemon.  I just decided to get the money back.  I will probably just do a 1300KT from the custom shop.

I now have four 760's, and they were tested with 7.9gr pellets. Wadcutters are terrible in these rifles, like the Superpells. But they seem to like the JSB Exact Express @ 7.87gr, and the H&N Sniper Light @ 7.5gr. I did this with 12 shots from the 760-D variant 8 with H&N Sniper Lights. 8 pumps @ 10yds.

Yeah I got a 74 /77 760 that I got from neighbor lady...shoots like the first pic....it is now a wall hanger...LOL

Ah, the Sportsman 900. I have the "tactical sniper" version. The Black Ops Sniper Rifle Jr and it far from a tack driver. At ten yards I'm getting 1-2" groups on rest. It isn't great but a fun plinker for me. I wouldn't peg it as a hunting worthy rifle but I've seen worse. Anything you can say on how to improve accuracy? I know it's not me, I can shoot -1/2" groups with my .22 gas piston at ten yards so I can't see it being anything but the rifle.

I believe there is a mod for taping the barrel of the 900 (search function)...mine are  stock..and I guess tack driver is in the eye of the shooter...LOL..mine are can killers so that makes for a forgiving target ..size wise...LOL...tack driver on paper at 10 meters

He'll likely end up with it one day anyways so why not just give him that old 760 of yours ?
It shoots great and he likes it so why not , he'd like it more being your gun anyways.
Im thinking it might have a rifled barrel, they were definitely using them around that time.

Jump on Crosman's website and grab you a refurb 2100 and don't look back.
Then for his next gift get ahold of EGilman and order some nice wood furniture for it.

 It does take awhile to wear in the trigger on 2100's , I find that hard pull to throw off a shot if not paying close attention to where it breaks, best to smooth out the trigger.

Yes... trigger needs a bit of love/breaking in.

Yes the 2100 is a great rifle and I love mine.
It has about the perfect cheek weld for me, if I didn't know better I'd swear it was custom fit to me.

When I restored the 760-D, with it's more complex trigger system, I used a steel wire wheel in the Dremel to polish the parts, shafts and all. Then lightly coated the friction surfaces with moly paste.

The moly paste on the trigger parts does smooth it out some. It's still a bit firm, but smooth.
