First numbers out of my ss 25 mrod

Ok I had to send my mds hammer back it was to rounded up front so today I figgured I would try maching a hammer out of aluminum stock I had I machined it put my gun together and noticed the gun leaking out  threw the barrel at low pressure like 500 psi and it quit once I got to a thousand psi any way the hammer ended up weighing 33 grams I got a 10 lb spring with 2 coils I removed and ports are at .170 filled to 3000 psi first string with 34 gr mk2 1.907 2. 930 3. 917 gun started leaking out the barrel again 4. 929 5. 916 6. 907 7.911 8.902 9. 891 I was shocked at that since there isn't any real preload on the hammer gun was leaking air and it didn't sound like it was going to be a very powerful shot now I got to take back apart and try to figure out why it's leaking

It's probably the oring on the valve, they're tricky to get together sometimes.

I looked at the orings there all good called jsa because this is a replacement poppet and bonnet they said it would have to Barneshed in so I tried with a drill 4 or 5 times but it wouldn't seal I put in the old poppet and bonnet it sealed I will see what kind of numbers I get off it and go from there to see if I'll have to mess with the new poppet. I probably should have used some polish on the poppet that's how I've gotten other valves to seal kind of lapping them together I guess I'll check numbers tomorrow with the old poppet

Mark, those are fantastic numbers with .25! Once you get that leak fixed, you’ll be good to go!

You are definitely cranking them out now!  I took mine all the way to 77 FPE but the accuracy wasn't there.  I brought it back down to 870 FPS and WOW, she'll drill holes at 50 yards now.  Yes, using the MKIIs.

Yeah I figured it will have to be backed down to about 900 to get accuracy but it's fun to see how highit will go trigger treat  heavy is your hammer. The one I made out of aluminum today may have to be lightened more it's at about 33 grams

I am running a 45 gram, but I put a couple of 34 grs in there so currently 50 grams.  I got one of the production SS valves and the spring in it is too heavy, IMO.  I need to do some work on it with the jet and spring to get it back like I had it with the prototype valve.  I just haven't mess with it with springtime events happening.

I got a pretty light spring in it with what looks a 75 on the jet I'll get some more numbers tomorrow

I was supposed to get a tuning kit but never did and I never got around to ordering one either.  I am getting 15 shots within a 2% ES at 56 FPE, but would like to get it back to 24 shots at 56 FPE within 2%.  Mine is hard to cock at 56 FPE compared to the previous valve and is wasting more air too.  I will eventually work on it again.  I just kinda got bummed out with the results and set it aside.  It's something to look forward to though once I get back into it.  I am just enjoying a break from tuning at the moment and enjoying the gun like it is for now.  I have a tank so it's not a huge deal.  The gun was awesome on my last hunt so there is no rush.

I ordered a tuning kit came with a couple different springs and the same jet that I already have in it so I left the jet alone and put in the lightest return spring in it. Are you running .220 ports  I'm only at .170 but it's not regulated if I get 8 shots at 65 fpe and a decent spread I'll run it . I have a couple tanks one 90 cu in and a 88 cu ft plus a shoe box shot count isn't a total concern also have a bottle disco that gets alot of shots so if I get 8 powerful shots I'll be happy

Yes, .220 on the barrel port and everything else .250.  All I really need is a lighter valve spring and I'll be golden.  I have 4 or 5 jets to play with.  The valve is just not setup the way I want it currently, which is nobody's fault but mine and is an easy fix when I get time.  My gun is regulated.

Well I tried the old bonnet and poppet with a couple different springs and found it was wasting alot of air took a couple shots with it had the 34 gr mk2 going 988 fps with the hammer spring backed all the way off . I took out the valve again and couldn't get the revised poppet to seal then it came apart . Ended up calling jsa and they told me to send it to them and they get it fixed up .back to waiting again . Oh well

Planning on getting a bolt the same size and pitch as the hammer spring ajuster about 3 inches long Chuck it in the lathe turn down a half inch of it to fit the spring bore out the end cap to the larger internal threads use a nut to lock the spring adjustment pull the bolt out and change springs without  removing the rear end cap

Bummer,  The poppet seems to be tough and well built on mine.  My suspicion is that the poppet may take a set over time and when you upset that, they may not seal back again unless you get them back in the same spot.  Just a guess though and JSA would need to confirm that.  I had an older version poppet in my prototype SS valve and when I took it apart I couldn't get it to seal back again.  I did all of the tricks with a drill and sandpaper to no avail.  That's why I got the latest production valve because those older poppets were not available anymore.
I had a little trouble getting the new valve to seal, but it was during the winter and cold.  I brought it inside the house filled to 3000 psi plus and it sealed after doing that and have had no leaks to date.

You should check out my friend SynRodSteve's thread on here.  He made his SSG so he could swap out the inner screw of the end cap so he could quickly change gaps also.  You can find it in the SSG thread Bob Restern started up top in the sticky section.

The older larger poppet sealed right up but the revised one wouldn't I think I had to much of a hammer for the older poppet I shot it and sounded like alot of hammer bounce tried a heaver spring to shut it faster made it worse 4 shots and I was under 2000 psi so I sent it back to get a new poppet installed by them 988 fps for a couple shots and wasn't trying to get there 10 lb spring 33 gram aluminum hammer . I bet a person could get over 100 fpe easily with it opened up lol

I had mine set up with a ssg and a bolt out the back with a nut to lock in my gap I didn't think I would need a ssg though with the ss valve idk I guess

The SS valve is definitely more friendlier by design than a stock valve when it comes to hammer bounce, but it is also much easier to crack open so I use a TSS system just to eliminate any possibility of hammer bounce.

Thought about trying a tss I may try the ssg to once I drill out the hammer I can't use a peek striker then like i wanted to with the 50 gram mds but my aluminum hammer doesn't have a striker it is all ready heavy enough at 33 grams with a 10 lb spring might have to lighten it more yet I guess I'll see when I get my valve back
