Getting used to FFP scope

I had picked up a BSA Tactical 4-14x44 mil dot FFP scope to mount on my new marauder. This is the first FFP scope I have used. I think it's going to take some time getting used to using it. I'm just shooting at ranges of 25 to 50 yards. Has anyone else had to go through an adjustment period using a FFP scope? If this dosn't work out I may switch it out with a UTG Accushot SWAT or Hawk airmax scope I have.

They are a bit different huh? I have a Monstrum FFPS 4X14-44 but I have not mounted it yet. Just playing with it, I notice it takes careful eye placement. I'll get her mounted on something, then I'll see what she'll do. It's also my first FFP scope.

i bought one this time last year for my encore PB, after most of the summer trying to get used to it....i gave it to my son and put back the nikon monark-III that was on it.

he likes it on his wsm270 kimber real well !! i'm glad i didnt waist my money on it

Yeah I'm not sure I like it. I'll try it a few more times. If I can't get used to it, on goes one of the other 2.

Having owned 3 of the BSA's ... down to 1 now, you need to make sure that your turrets stay somewhat near there mid point +/- or your the view threw scope gets skewed somewhat.
Otherwise a good entry level FFP and great on a PCP ( Not springer rated )

well my opinion was with a much higher quality FFP scope than the BSA line.
as i stated, it was purchased for a PB.....used for long range field hunting and
not at all for airgun use.

I am no scope expert at all.  I do have both a SFP UTG 4-16x44 on my .22 and a FFP Falcon 5.5-25x50 on my .25.  Both are zeroed at 25 yards and I just use mil-dots for anything past that or closer in.  I do like the FFP scope, but do zoom in a little just to be able to see the crosshairs and 1/2 mil-dot lines better as they are extremely small and close together at 5.5x magnification.  The main thing I like about the FFP is that the mil-dots stay correct regardless of what magnification I use, and I do often change the magnification settings to bring the heads of the smaller critters up really close when out beyond 30 yards.  The SFP UTG scope's mil-dots don't change/recalculate with different magnifications so I generally will leave it in one spot and sight it in at that spot so I know the mil-dots will be correct as I am not proficient in recalculating for the difference in magnifications on a SFP scope.  I guess it's just a matter of preference and what one gets use to.  I prefer the FFP scopes and will only buy those going forward.  I can't explain the differences between the two better than that.  I think Bob explained the differences between the two in a post a short while back.  I just know I am good with my mil-dots on the FFP scope regardless of which magnification I use and don't have to worry about messing up when changing the magnification on the FFP scope.

Ken I don't know how to describe the difference, but there is a difference. Maybe it's the spacing of the mil dots. I shot the rifle again today. I felt more comfortable shooting with it today.

 Bought my first FFP scope about  6 years ago, liked it out of the box,  no time needed getting use to it. Time and pellets wasted on SFP scopes made it worth every Penny.  At the time I couldn't get use to my SFP scope with the mildot hold overs changing every time the magnification change.  Hold overs worked on my target, but not in the field,  missing too many varmints and nuisance non native birds.  After joining the group, found out about keeping SFP scope on same magnification as zeroed which fixed my problems.  Threw out my SFP scopes and now only use fixed mag or FFP variables and life is wonderful again.
 I can zero and rangefind with any setting available, without using the complicated math involved using SFP scopes.  No calculator needed to range find with a FFP or fixed mag rifle scope!    Of course you can't range find or use hold overs below about 4x as the mildots run together looking like a duplex reticle, but I don't know of anyone who does.
  I use 10x fixed and 10-12x on my 3-12x mostly, but I crank it down to 3x from time to time for practice.  FFp's are love or hate mostly as is no middle of the road I can see.

The first time out with the scope I had it set on 6x. Was shooting at 25 & 40 yards. Have the scope zero'd for 25yards. This past weekend I had bumped it up to 10x. This did make it easier to see the mill dots for my hold over at 40 yards.

8x minimum has a very narrow field of view and is harder to lock in on targets up close.  Unless you are always shooting long range I would go for one with say a 4x minimum.

Yes I might get the 4x aswel. I just brought the 8.5-25×42 side winder and I love it. So clear and accurate. I like how I use the mil dots to  shoot pass 40 yards coz I have zeroed it in for 30yards. Before the mtc  can be quick change to what yards you are shooting.

I have the Hawke 6-24X56 FFP Mil. I love FFps from my smoke sticks. I rarely use the turrets and just do holdovers. If you happen you use Strelok Pro you, you can zero in for different ammo (pellets) and it will automatical give you your MOAs or Mils if you set it up that way. I zeroed my Impact at 40yds on high. and then zeroes it on low power for the same 40. I had to apply 11 clicks for zero. Now I just select the JSB ammo entry for low power, turn up my eleven clicks and it gives me my holdovers for 5-100 yards. I have always loved FFPs It just makes life easier. You can actually do the same with SFPs if you leave the zoom alone.

Not much to get used to. The mil or moa marks are ALWAYS correct no matter the piwer setting

I’ve replaced just about all my scopes to FFP . The only one I have left is a 2x7x32 Hawke , and the only reason I’ve kept it is because it’s so light . I use it on max and never play with the AO. I’m now shopping for a long range scope and will probably end up with another Athlon mainly due to price .

i have both second fical and first focal scopes,, in paper targets i use second focal plane scopes (sfp) coz there reticles are finer at higher magnification,,on hunts first focal scopes are superior,, that is if your mil ranging,
first focal scopes are best if the turrets match the reticles ex: mil reticles and mil turrets ,or moa reticles and moA turrets
