Just ordered a Chinese Discovery scope for hunter class field target.

Due to the recent raising of the hft scope power limit to 16x I ordered a Chinese Discovery scope due to this review.........


Since I have no need for a FFP reticle (First Focal Plane) or a "camera bracket", and the reticle was too busy for my liking, I ordered this Discovery 4-16x50 scope with a Hawke style reticle instead. Hopefully the "torture tests" are valid and the optics/mechanicals are similar to the review Joe gave of his 4.5-18x44 Discovery.......

LOL.........this video looks like a test done by a "Snake Oil salesman" to fool the buyer, but who knows!

After I receive the scope and do some testing mounted to my HW95 I'll update the good, bad, or ugly.

Wouldn't it be a kicker if this scope is nicer than your Hawke Panorama? Depending on where in China, they CAN make very good optics from what I read. Maybe not as nice as the Japanese, but for $200-ish, it's worth the try.

I do love those direct from China shipping windows, "You're order will arrive sometime between May of 18' and January of 19'! It has been my experience that they usually do arrive on the short side of that window.

I've ordered some scope mounts from China and they also arrived quicker than the stated shipping date.

LOL....the Hawke Panorama is also made in China even though the "larger print" states "Born in the UK".

According to the "sales pitch" the Discovery scopes are made to higher standards than the other Chinese offerings. LOL, could simply be HYPE but entertaining anyway except for the noisy back ground "music"..........

If I'm not mistaken, the vast majority of consumer line scope are made in China. UTG, Hawke (as Ed noted), Athlon, Barska, Aeon, etc.

I think Chinese manufacturing is capable of making good glass and a solid product, the problem is that WHO is really making the scope for WHOM is hit or miss. I think that is why you see reviews that contradict one another even under the same brand label.

It's like any other private label manufacturing. It changes from contract period to contract period.

Hmmm... good point. I’m loving that reticle though.
A quick read of the link to the model the OP has purchased... I can find no mention of being springer rated either. Maybe both are. I wonder how short a distance it can focus in at?

Anywhoo........these "shock resistance videos" may just be "sales pitches" but I was interested enough to buy one. LOL....I've had to return a couple Hawke AirMax scopes that barfed (or shifted the poi when focusing) after being mounted to a .177 HW95 with a 12.5-13fpe tune. I'm pretty sure that my Hawkes couldn't stand up to this kind of testing (assuming the testing is legit).

My Discovery scope ordered on April 27th was sitting in Dubai, UAE on April 29th.
LOL....obviously the scope shipment didn't originate anywhere near Rougemont, NC!

Yep, scope is mounted and it actually is pretty good, however when focusing it really doesn't "snap in and out" as quickly as I would have liked which made scope rangefinding rather difficult when shooting hunter class field target. I was a bit intrigued by this so I did some "ocular adjustment" even though the crosshairs were sharp. When doing a "head bop" with the scope I noticed the image moved "big time" so I adjusted the ocular a bit at a time till the crosshairs stayed on the aim point when moving my eye side to side yet the crosshairs were still sharp. Took a while tweaking the fast focus eye piece but after the adjustment the image did "snap in and out of focus" considerable quicker and scope rangefinding was better.

I found that while the optics are comparable to my 5-15x50 Hawke Panorama that cost about $80 more, the field of view of the Discovery isn't as wide.

One of the things that irked me about the Discovery was the blue colored lens caps like this.........

Some black Krylon "for plastic paint" solved that issue...........


I wanted to add side wheel to the side focus knob and found that if I "reamed out" the rubber insert of a spare cheap UTG side wheel it would fit the focus knob snugly, however the modified side wheel was/is secured to the side focus knob with only RTV silicone rubber. The silicone rubber hold the SW firmer than the UTG set screws, eliminates the chance of "set screw damage", and the SW can be removed by carefully pushing the side focus knob out of the SW. I also machined off the SW "knobbies" to create a flat surface for marking my holdover symbols............


In general I like the scope (especially considering the price). I have the scope mounted in a set of cheap high Weaver Quad Lock rings (less than $10 at "WallyMart") which are clamped to a UTG MNT-DTW145 Universal Dovetail To Picatinny Adapter and the setup works perfectly with the 50mm objective.........

The one piece Universal mount functions similar to my one piece BKL mount, however the UTG mount also incorporates functioning stop pins and so far hasn't budged on the receiver dovetails with the relatively heavy 4-16x50 Discovery scope.

Hope this helps some, however I really haven't owned the scope long enough to give it a "toughness rating" or how warranty work would be handled since it's been solid so far mounte dto my .177 HW95.
