Quietest 10m air rifle?
« on: March 27, 2018, 04:19:42 AM »
Hi everyone, I recently purchased a fwb 800 basic, and while I love it its pretty loud shooting indoors. Also there does not seem to be any threading on the barrel allowing for a moderator. I want to be able to shoot in my apartment so I was wondering if there were other options (pcp or otherwise) that are quieter or that are moderator compatible. thanks

The Daisy 853s are very quiet. And very accurate to boot.

You might have to go backwards to a spring rifle like the FWB-300.  But they are not as accurate as CA rifles, because of the moving mass of the spring, piston and sledge.  So if practicing for competition is you goal, the spring rifles won't work, they are not competitive today.

If you're handy, you may be able to make a push in moderator like this:  https://airgunaccuracy.wordpress.com/push-in-silencer-sound-moderator-for-the-lg400/

The barrel does not go all the way to the end of the shroud so there is space at the end of the shroud for some lead dust collecting.   ;)

Mine has more of a "snap!" sound than anything else. The only thing I can think of that would be quieter would be a CO2 setup (like something from the Crosman Custom Shop set up with a Lothar Walther barrel) coupled with a TKO.

Blue,

My FWB 601, CMP 853 and Air Arms T200 all popped when fired.  I guess it could also be like a snap.  My FWB 300S twangs when fired.

Yeah, just trying to make a differentiation between my springers (cheap) which have a very mechanical thunk sound and my 853 which is a very quick crack but more along the line of smacking a newspaper with a ruler or medium hand clap.

Even my pumpers make more of a pop sound than the 853.

Didn't think of it before but you could put a TKO on a pumper with a LW barrel also.

I have an ldc for my 853 but I remove the sights when using it.  I guess you could leave them on if you wanted to but there's no flat on the barrel rearward to keep the front sight aligned.  Not a hard issue to rectify if necessary.

BTW, for some guns, you need someone else standing in different positions to determine the sound of the rifle.
With your ear right next to it, it may sound louder than it really is.

Also shooting in a room with carpeting and drapes to absorb the sound, will be less noisy than hardwood and bare floors where the sound will  just reflect and bounce.

I figured that out when I commented about the sound of the spring, that my wife standing next to me could not hear.
Some of that spring sound was the vibration coming through the stock to the cheekbone to the ear.   When I lifted my head off the stock, that sound almost disappeared.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I'll have to look into a push in moderator some more, seems promising. Also I might pick up a 300, I used to have a 300s junior that for sure had less of a crack than my 800 does now.

You cant go wrong with the 2240 from custom shop,I have two one with 14"barrel and one with 18" both have tko moderators and are whisper quiet , at ten meters both shoot 10 shot string one hole, woodswalker is also super quiet with a tko extension, I have a airforce edge that I need to quiet down so I can shoot in house

Stick a piece of electrical tape on the muzzle and shoot a hole in it with a wadcutter.

This turns the open space in the shroud into a single baffle moderator. This quiets my SSP match rifle down a lot.

A push in moderator or a couple of baffle disks pushed into the end of the barrel shroud will quiet it down to nothing.

You only need 2 disks to quiet it down. I have done it on several 10m rifles with good effect. I used a piece of 1/4 inch thick delrin which I hole sawed the baffles.out of and then turned to a slight press fit into the shroud. I used a 1/4 inch hole for the pellet to pass through so as to avoid any clipping issues.

Press one disk in so that it is approximately half way and then flush the other with the end of the shroud. Super easy and super quiet.

Must be a matter of perspective.
I shoot my FWB 300S indoors all winter and never thought it was loud. The wadcutter pellet hitting the duct seal trap gives off more noise.
But yes, a 2240 with a TKO is unbelievably quiet.

Believe it or not, there is a somewhat noticeable difference between the thunk of a FWB 300 and the discharge from the muzzle of a PCP 10m rifle, and it is even more pronounced indoors.
Much like you, I would not even consider a moderator of any sort on a 10m springer, but on a SSP or PCP it does make them a bit more friendly in tight confines indoors.

How do you word it... "Air Guns" or "AirGuns"?
