Grabbed a Disco!
«

So I found a great deal on a .177 Disco with pump and had to grab it! I always meant to get a .22 but hey, if it doesn't work out I can always swap the barrel or sell it, keep the pump and grab a .22!
I plan on using it for hunting so I'd like to hear about the best grain pellet and some of the best upgrades to do outside of the TKO muzzle.
I'm pumped, no pun intended! Thanks!!!

Mine liked the Crosman 10.5 gr. Ultra Mags when it was a .177 cal. Did you get the email I sent you?

I had some accuracy issues with mine out of the box. I did the simplest trigger mod, just polished the sear and reduced trigger spring weight. Also added a Charlie mellon power adjuster($15.00) and recrowned the barrel. The barrel was the issue and now it LOVES the Benji Discovery 10.5's.. what a gun!! Congrats on yours

Jeep, congratulations. They have different tastes, so you will probably have to try a number of pellets to find her favorite. If you have any problems, post about it and we will help you.
I think I read somewhere that a caliber change on the Disco is only about $30 for parts and its a simple procedure. I bet a number of the guys have done it so maybe someone with firsthand knowledge will chime in. There may be no need to sell yours if you want a .22.
Looking forward to your first hunt with the new gun.

Sweet, get a power mod -- get the 22 barrel -- work the trigger -- re-crown the barrel ----- put some poly mags in it and kill everything

Congrats....
Stick to the heavy pellets 10.2-10.6 gr (Crosman Premier Heavies, JSB Exact Heavies, H&N Baracuda/Beeman Kodiak).... they suit the power of the .177 Disco perfectly.... Get an RVA and BACK DOWN the setting a bit to get a better bell-curve.... Stock they tend to shoot fastest right at or near the top end of the pressure range.... Alternately, you might try filling to 2200ish to get on the curve better with the stock spring setting.... I haven't heard of anyone doing that with a .177 but by the looks of the shot strings I have seen it should work....
The change to .22 cal is dead simple.... Get a new barrel and a .22 cal bolt.... NO other changes required....
I hope you have a Chrony, because to get the best performance you need to find the ideal fill and refill pressure.... I only use that part of the string where the velocities are within 4-5% of the maximum.... If you are plinking at short range, you can extend that to 10%.... If you are shooting exclusively at 50+ yards, you may need to tighten it up to 3%.... If you don't have a Chrony, set up a target at 50 yards and shoot 3-5 shot groups, watching the POI carefully.... If the first target(s) are low, start with a lower fill pressure.... When you see the POI dropping, record the pressure and use that as your refill pressure.... With a .22 Disco I found that starting from 2000 psi I could get about 24-25 shots within 4% of the highest velocity and refilled at 1200 psi.... You can get another 5 shots down to 1000 but they will be starting to drop at longer ranges....
Before you start modifying it.... DON'T.... Unless you need more power than a stock .22 Disco for a particular job you are better off to leave it alone and enjoy it.... Crosman did a GREAT job of balancing the bell curve on the .22 version.... If you start porting the valve, transfer port, etc.... you will make the curve more "peaky" and lose what were previously good shots on the ends because you raised the velocity in the middle of the curve.... Remember, for the most part, anything you do to increase power will rob you of shot count....

Check the library Brian, pretty good details there. It will help with acc. by releasing the pellet with a more uniform air flow when pellet reachs end of barrel(no tipping of pellet)

How about a power adjuster? How does that operate and how much more power does it give you overall?

Hey Jeep.... did you read my post above?.... In a .177 Disco from the shot strings I have seen published you need to dial it DOWN a bit with an RVA.... You're not (or at least you shouldn't be) looking for the highest velocity in the first few shots.... you're looking for the most consistent velocity over the string.... a nice smooth curve peaking about half way through....
The "Power Adjuster" works by changing the preload on the hammer spring.... Screw it in and you get a stronger hammer hit, more velocity, fewer shots, and need more pressure to achieve a bell-curve.... Screw it out, you get a weaker hammer hit, less velocity, more shots, and need less pressure to achieve a bell curve....
The Disco is optimized from the factory for .22 cal.... It has a beautiful flat shot string that peaks at about 1600-1700 psi.... and will deliver 24-25 shots within 4-5% of the maximum with a 1200 psi refill.... When Crosman put the .177 barrel on it they left in the same hammer, spring, and ports.... The .177, from the shot strings I have seen posted, peaks at nearly full pressure and then it's downhill from there.... Heavier pellets seem to help move the curve down to where it should be.... more like that on the .22.... An RVA (rear velocity adjuster / power adjuster) will allow you to balance the bell curve for the power level and fill / refill pressures you desire....

That Gander Mountain deal really is hard to resist. I'd have to pay tax since they have a store in NY but even with tax it would only come to $299 If I didn't already have 2 disco's I'd jump on this,, heck, I'm tempted to buy it and just sell off the pump. I must be strong. Anyway, congrats to you guys who have a disco coming,, you're gonna love it
