Ataman M2R Tact Carbine Type 2 .357 cal-Tuning/Adjusting/Break In????
«

December 05, 2017, 08:33:52 PM »
Hello All,
I recently purchased an Ataman M2R Tac Carbine in .357cal. I only have put about 200 rounds of assorted ammo through it, checking function and such, no hard core accuracy testing yet….although it does like JSB Exacts 81g- 3/4″ @ 50yds. I got out the chrony today and checked some numbers for three different types of pellets and slugs.
I shot three 8 shot strings of the JSB Exacts 81g, all three strings from a full 300 bar fill down to about 180 bar and the temp was about 40 F (I did not shoot multiple strings of the other pellets or slugs I had, just one for each)
here are the results for the JSB’s:
First String Second String Third String
876 912 907
891 910 876
890 903 879
889 915 877
890 904 874
887 914 880
888 934 897
870 921 876
avg-885 avg-914 avg-883
As you can see the second string is a bit off compared to the other two…..so i have a few questions-
Is there a needed “break in” period for the regulator to become consistent?
Anyone out there know how to adjust the hammer spring tension and the regulator for this particular rifle?
There is nothing in the manual about this, there is a schematic…but not super detailed-doesn’t show what parts are threaded so I don’t know what to turn, trying to avoid taking the gun all apart 😉
I do have a Hatsan AT44S QE .22 cal that I put a regulator in and tweaked the hammer spring, I understand the concept..I just wanted the tinker with the Ataman.
Thanks In Advance,
Rick

Hi Rick,
I was just wondering if you had done any more shooting with your M2R? I will be receiving mine Monday and any "heads up" would be awesome. I already have the Ataman AP16 Compact and Standard and was so impressed with their performance that I thought I'd try the M2R .357 so I could have a Big Bore in a repeater, not to mention the regulator.
So little is out there regarding Ataman AT ALL. Yes, they are pricey.....but they (to this point) seem incredibly well built. Top notch in every way. No "short cuts" taken that I have seen. Anything you can report on would be great. I will surely do the same when it arrives and weather gets a little better. In a terribly cold, snowy stretch here in Cincinnati Ohio area right now.
Thanks for your post......and keep them coming please. The more people know about these fine guns the more feedback will be generated once they start purchasing them.

...also, What slugs have you tried? Did they fit in the mag? How long a slug will fit.......there is no dimensions listed ANYWHERE regarding depth of the mag. I have some slugs from Nick Neilson of Neilson Specialty Ammo I would love to try, I just hope they fit. I know they work AWESOME in my .357 Rex and .357 Recluse. Sorry about all the questions, but like I said there is NOTHING out there at all.
Thanks

Regarding your strings.....You might want to clean the barrel to see if there is excess oil and crud. Those strings seem to be a little "off" for a regulated gun. IMO they should all be closer too your 2nd string from everything I have seen. But as you noted, there IS a small break-in window even with regulated guns. My guess is after about 500 or so pellets you should see her settle down.....at least that is my experience with other airguns, although my AP16 was money right out of the box?

glad to hear so many positive things from you AP16 owners . Ive been on the fence with buying one of those and really like the idea and size/measurements etc. ive also been on the fence with it being .177 or .22 and think that its a tough call given all the ammo choices these days with the .177 and heavy pellets you could have a lot of options vs then running lighter pellets . obviously the same goes for pellet options in .22 but it doesnt seem to have the FPS to want to consider heavy .22 pellets though i could rotate between light ones and then the general 16-21 grain range was my thoughts.
as for your Ataman .357's have you had any issues with the magazine and needed to adjust the spring tension ? i was on the fence with wanting the bullpup version for better balance and to not feel like such a benchrest gun that was frontal heavy. but i didnt want the short shot count of the .357 and wanted the bullpup in .30 . That lead me to end up buying the Tactical folding stock version in .30 and it seems really well built and nice and accurate right out of the box. I had it sighted in at 40 yards within 3 shots and it seems im getting 3 full magazines before needing to refill and falling off the reg. that was more of the shot count i was looking for rather then the 8 to 10 shots everyone was claiming with the .357 ( i still hand pump everything , lol! ) ... within the first 5 times filling the magazine it began to malfuntion and skip shots/pellets cycling correctly. after a little reading on reviews etc. i heard others had needed to tighten the lock set screw on the spring tension. After doing that it seems to be fine and i bellieve so far im rather happy with the quality/fit/finish/overall build etc.
Just got my LDC in from Neil C. and it screws on like butter and looks great. Have not shot it yet but if its anything like the ones he made for my 9mm Evanix rifles it will be beyond backyard friendly now.
Ataman really seems to be a nice quality product maybe with more reviews and feedback from guys like us more buyers will step up and then lead to more info on guys tuning them etc. Wouldnt mind the option coming along for a 500 or 750cc Carbon Fiber bottle. lol!

Hey Jason...when I bought my .357 M2R, regular stock, I bought it from PA Refurb ($300 of reg price) couldn't pass it up. Unfortunately It came not functioning but I sent it back and is functioning fine now. Due to weather and my work schedule I haven't got to do anything with it yet other than make sure it was chambering, fireing, and indexing properly.....and it does NOW. Somehow it slipped through the cracks before being shipped to me BUT they DID make it right.
I was told the mag had an issue (probably what you had mentioned) and that the trigger assembly was back to far in the stock rendering it unable to fire. All is forgiven now lol. I am anxious to get my scope sighted in and do some pellet and slug testing. When I do I will post what I find. One thing for sure is it IS loud. Luckily for me I live out in the country so not a big deal. I was hoping one of the LDC's I had on one of my other guns would fit, but unfortunately they didn't.....so, I will be buying another one to quiet her down for hunting.

The regulators on all pcps take time to settle in, I've noticed it on both my factory regulated guns quite a bit.

Hey Guys,
Rick- I have about 500 rounds through it now, mainly JSB Exacts 81g. I did punch the bore when I first got it. Groups have tightened up a bit, getting used to it and all. I have shot a few different pellets and slugs through it. No hardcore accuracy testing with anything yet....just having fun with it.
Here is what I've got so far-
JSB Exact, 82g- .5"- .75" at 50 yds. Function fine with the mag.
Predator Polymag, 81g-pretty much same accuracy as the JSB's at 50 yds. They do not function with the mag, too long.
H & N Grizzly, 82g-terrible accuracy, 4"- 6" at 50 yds. They do fit and function with the mag. No groove(s) on the sides, mag will not hold them securely.
Nielsen Specialty Ammo, 75g-.75"-1.25" at 50 yds. They do fit in the mag. But, they tend to "squirt" out..they are smooth on the sides, no groove(s) and OAL kinda short.
Air Venturi, 95g PHP-1.5"-2" at 50 yds. They do fit and function with the mag.
Hunters Supply, 115g PHP-Have not shot these yet. They do not function with the mag, too long.
When the weather gets better I will definitely be doing more in depth accuracy and chrony testing with all the above ammo and more.
Jason- Fortunately, I have had zero issues with my magazine, it works perfectly. With a 300 bar fill, I get 11-12 shots before it falls off the reg. I have been filling it to 250-260 bar and that gets me a full magazine, 7 shots.....after the 7 shots, it is at about 160-170 bar. I bit the bullet and got a compressor and a tank, life is much easier now, lol!! I purchased an LDC from BwaltonPCP, it works pretty well, I just am not overly impressed with the materials used to make it. It was only $100.00 so I can't complain too much I guess. I am working with Donny to make some modifications to his Sumo to get it to fit the Ataman in .357. I will post some pics and give the back story when it arrives....hopefully next week sometime.
Wayne-thanks for the info, I figured as much...the regulator has belleville washers.
Yes, there isn't a whole lot of info out there on these guns...hopefully that will change
I am very pleased with the gun-the build quality is excellent and it performs very well!!!

Jason....if you don't mind me asking....about how much was Neil's LDC. I can't remember what I paid for my Texan LDC but it was steep, it works great, but still was costly.

Rick, I know what you mean about Nick's 75 grain slugs. The "squirts out" analogy is perfect. I felt the same with both the 75 grain and the 95 grain. They both popped out when I chambered a new round. They were BOTH VERY accurate. The 95's just barely fit. May just use them single feed. I want to try out the Benjamin Nosler's as well. My 357 Rex and Recluse both shoot those 145 grain very well. Need more slugs that fit the mags

Can't say for sure Ed, but I would assume so. Basically it's the same gun in BullPup version. Congrats on the new gun, I think you'll love it.
