I was home-bound today. Every time I walked by that rear window, I looked out at The Feeder Zone. I think you all know how that goes.

One time, I scanned it and found a nutter just beside himself with excitement over the bounty he'd found under the bird feeder. I got the S510, took the scope caps off, unlocked it. I went to rack a round into the breech, and saw all the visible holes in the magazine were empty. "Oh @#$%." I thought. "I've gone and shot the last round, last time out, without even knowing it." I took the mag out, and sure enough, she was empty.

A moment of panic ensued. I ran down to the basement, and luckily found 3 full mags in my shooting bag. Ran back upstairs and loaded it up. Thank heavens, yon nutter was still partaking of his Black Saturday feast.

I snuck out and swung the S510 around the corner of the house, braced it from a standing position, and he spotted me right away, but paused from his feeding for only a few seconds. He relaxed when he saw I wasn't going to physically get closer to him. He found a sunflower seed and got right to work.

I estimated the range at 12 yards, set the AO accordingly and homed in on him.  I took my time and lined up that first mil dot right on his ear and sent the lead. *chk-puk* It was a quiet hit, but it had the desired effect. As I watched through the scope, his eyes immediately unfocused as he fell on his side, and he proceeded into about the most elaborate Fancy-Dance I've ever seen. It was a solid 10 seconds' worth of acrobatics, the likes of which only a brain-dead squirrel can show us. There were straight vertical launches, a couple of flips, and some sideways spinning on the ground.

I ventured forth on the recovery mission, and found one side of his head soaked in blood and a sunflower seed still between his teeth. One of the two front lower ones was broken off. I've never seen that before.

I got him back into the kitchen sink, and probed the chopstick. Sure enough, it was the prized "In one ear and out the other" shot.

I know, it's no Hajimoto 40 yard head shot, but I'll take it.

Nice shot Jeremy. I had a few kills where the animal still had its food in its mouth. I can only guess the brain was shut off so fast and had so much chaotic signals from the destroyed brain that the muscles never relaxed during the dance.

Good shooting Jeremy. Gotta love the ear to ear piercing. I'm always curious what causes some dances to be better than others? I've tried to see if there is any pattern to big dances and maybe shot placement or something? Never seems to correlate to any one thing. Pretty interesting.

Michael I have shot allot of tree squirrels and ground squirrels and some yellow bellied marmots and there seems to be no answer as to why some dance more than others or a correlation to animal size. I have had shots land as close to the same spot on the brain as you can get and have one animal drop totally still and the other one jump around wildly. Probably can never be answered as to why but like you it interests me and I still look for a reason why.

Guessing a small knitting needle or kabob skewer needs to go into the field bag ... find it very informative to connect the In / Out path in that manor.
