Man, it was a lovely day to shoot and redo the backyard shooting range.

Got tired of the sun being in my eyes at lunch time on the back porch so, I moved a bunch of stuff around today.

I moved my picnic table to the shady end of the carport. Also since only one person can shoot at a time on the picnic table I turned it the long way so I could lay my chrony up there on the end of the table when I shoot. I have another wooden bench right beside it for a second person. Just use a beach umbrella if the sun doesn't cooperate.

Got targets all the way out to 55 yds for practice and checking hold overs. I have a 5 yard wooden sled with targets on it every yard for close work.
You should be able to see it in the pics. It's at the 15 to 20 yd mark in the pic. I just roll it in to the 10 yd line for the closer shots. I use the 1/4 kz paper for all the close targets. I'm close enough to call it zero by 23 or 24 yd mark, and then flat out to 37 or so. That sled just makes things run so much quicker when setting up my scopes.

I have 5 Paul Porch gong targets out there, 3 Steel plinker reset targets, two Steel plinker quadrant targets, and a couple of Paul Porch spinner targets. Also 5 metal pellet traps to put paper targets on. Paul made me a nice larger metal trap to fit one of those big BR targets on.

 When I sit my fat arse down to shoot, I don't want to get up unless I absolutely have too! LOL

I don't mind getting up to move the sled, because I can shoot 6 different yardages before I have to move it again. Could really just move it once if I wanted. Have it at 10-15 then 16 to 21. Doubt 22 and 23 yds would pose much of a problem if I skipped them.

Agggh, gotta wash that green algae off that white chair ;-)   Washed it off the mowers and weedeaters. Missed a spot on the picnic table too! LOL

And today I'm sitting there watching the wind indicator on my rifle and the little silver windmill just the other side of the carport and I was actually doping for the wind and making decent shots. It's takin' me four years , and I'm finally learning to dope the wind a little? I'm a slow learner!

It was also nice here. This afternoon I put a scope on my new( to me) B40 and zeroed it at 25 yards. Nice gun, smooth and a great trigger. Then killed some wine bottle corks. Took out a one hole shooter to check a half dozen scope to see if they were broke or not. All but one was ok. The gun was one of my old Crosman Storm XT's. It's got a GRT trigger and it's in an old Benjamin GP wood thumbhole stock. Started in the early afternoon and shot till almost dark. Discovered my old F1 chrony is toast. Have to order a new one. Nice day.

Tim, my wife Renae and I used to love to have wine cork shooting competitions. Heck , shootin' ice cubes was pretty fun too.


Sorry about your chrony.  I've been using the Caldwell G2 Ballistic, but just use it as a basic chrony. I can't get into all that hook it up to the phone and do the app stuff! I do like that I can plug it right into an extension cord and don't have to worry about batteries ;-)

Comes in handy when I can sit it right on the end of the picnic table.

Thanks Jerry. I guess it was the calm before the storm? Woke up to some serious rain this morning. Managed to get two of our 3 dogs out to do their business this morning, but the Yorkie mix is holding out on me ;-)

I'm fortunate to have a decent se up myself. The back of my house faces east, so by the late afternoon, a lot of the backyard is in shade. But when it's not,  I just shoot from under the deck. From the deck to my farthest target, its about 50yd.

From the top pic below, you can see my 2 aluminum water bottles, that's about 30yd from the deck. Beyond that area, I cleared a path through the overgrowth, and set up 3" steel plates at: 40yd; 45yd; 50yd. So, who can spot all 3 plates?

Yeah, my addiction got a little out of hand since I bought my first Gamo in 2013 ! LOL     If I make it to the end of next month, I'll have gone a whole year without buying a new air rifle! LOL   Thank goodness I sold about 7 air guns last year.
I got into Field target, so I'll have to blame it on my buddies with all their nice stuff that made me follow suit ;-) 

Also, It's taken me 4 yrs, but I'm finally getting the hang of doping for the wind. Sure learned a lot since then. I had never even put a scope on a rifle until I got into pellet rifles.

Raining here today, glad it was so nice yesterday.

Yes sir, Paul is something else. He's the reason I got so much money tied up in guns and targets! LOL  I introduced him to my .25 Synrod back around Christmas 2013, then I believe it was late 2014 early 2015 or so when he came over and shot my Cricket and many other rifles.

Oh, it was on after that. He joined the Tarheel Airgun club here in NC and bought a fancy Daystate MK4 for his very first foray into the addiction. I've just been trying to keep up with him ever since! I just can't seem to make myself take those long trips to the matches like he does though.  Hard to leave the peace and quiet of these woods.

My favorite targets that Paul has made for me are the Gong targets. We found some nice stainless steel discs at the metal recycling place near Wilmington that make the perfect sound when the pellet slaps them.   Just cut a scrap metal face plate with appropriate kill zones and mount about an inch or so in front of it.

Good stuff Jimmy, thanks for sharing!  I like the gong targets, great for FT practice.  Just checked out Paul’s website, very cool!  I’ve been to five FT matches over this past year, I wish I had tried it sooner, it’s awesome.  I’m shooting Hunter with my TX200HC for now, definitely need to practice more than I do, and get either a better scope and/or side wheel for better ranging.  I would love to come down to a Tar Heel match someday, I think it’s like a 10+ hour ride though. Do you guys have matches in January or February, that’s the only time I would be able to travel, work gets in the way of all the fun

I looked at our match schedule, and indeed we had a match in January as well as February last year, so I would expect the same this coming year.  I'm planning on making the match in Pleasant Hill NC next month.  It's got to be cool weather before I can shoot in a match. I sweat too bad in hot weather. So, you've probably been to more matches than I have this year. I'm thinking 3 so far?

That pole has four gourds hanging from it. Our attempt to attract some Martins with no luck. We do have a bluebird box mounted on it a little lower that sees two or three broods of bluebirds a year.

I'm surprised no one asked what was in the tin cans under the carport by the picnic table? That's where we keep the shelled corn for the deer. We really enjoy watching them from the back porch at all odd hours of the day and night. We even had a doe who gave birth to triplets this year.

Very hard to get all three babies in one shot with the camera. Little buggers are everywhere and move like lightning.
