What diameter ball hone will work to get good cross hatching on a D34 compression tube

Don't ... balls don't go into corners and there effect while "Crosshatching" is not really leveling the surface ... this a job better suited to FIXED flat stones such as a 3 shoe Brake hone.
Just do forward of the cocking linkage slots and your good to go ... JMO

Don't forget to file, or grind off the metal part of the stone's shoe, on the end of the stone that will be against the chamber face. If you don't, the stone won't go all the way to the end of the cylinder, leaving a lip that will eventually ruin your piston seal.

Thanks Guys after several PM's I am going back to the 3 stone brake cylinder hone  I had a village idiot moment when I forgot to work the hone past the cocking mechanism & sear slots before turning on the hand drill  we all know how that ended  "Not Well"

FWIW I have hones that were handed down to me from my father that are well over 50 y/o that still work well, some even have small cracks across the stones. So old doesn't mean bad when it comes to hone stones. For the best results, new hone cutting stones should be broken in before use. This can be done by working the well lubricated hone in a piece of "scrap" tubing having the same ID as the tube you want to finish.
