A Requiem For MR Furry ! 8:00 Am - UPDATED Now to 6:30 Pm 9/26/2017

Requiem Definition: a musical service, hymn, or dirge for the repose of the dead.   A Lethal Air Pipe Tune, was Played on an Benjamin Trail NP 1100XL this morning. The time was shortly after 8 am. It all started with me doing last night's dishes in the kitchen sink, this morning. As I was scrubbing down a broiler tray I spotted a visitor on my backyard split rail fence. Low and Behold it was ..Mr. Furry !!! Hunting was not on the agenda this morning as it had been raining all night and we had gotten about 1 1/2 inches of rain in the last 2 hours. The rain had slacked off some, the outside temp was 48F and a brisk wind was gusting, on and off, from the North West. I watched Mr. Furry for a while, scampering back and forth, in and out of the woods, retrieving White Oak Acorns. He would hop up on the fence and devour his prize. After a while though, he began to dig Holes in my Backyard and Bury his Treasures. Whats more he was doing it in a shaded area, under a tree, that I have been struggling to grow grass in, all summer. I had eventually gotten grass to grow there and Mr Furry was doing his best to undo all my hard work. I decided to put a stop to this willful destruction of my property and add one more squirrel to the cashe I had in the freezer. I dried my hands, as best I could and headed down & out to my garage.  My journey to the garage brought me past my gun safe and I retrieved my 22cal Benjamin Trail NP 1100XL rifle and several Gamo 22cal 15.4gr Red Fire Hunting Pellets. Once in the garage I loaded the rifle, engaged the safety and put the remaining Red Fire Pellets in my front right upper shirt pocket. I reached the walk-thru garage door leading to my backyard and VERY SLOWLY began to open it. The hinges had been oiled previously, to enable a more silent opening, of the door. Also prior to opening the door, I sat down on my 3 legged hunting stool, to enable a more steady shot. I was sure that he would spot the door being opened but he Failed to notice, so busy was he in his task. Once I had the door opened enough to make a good shot, I braced my left hand on the left side door frame with my thumb sticking out. I made a V with my thumb and hand and rested the for-stock lightly in it. I then glassed the area with the scope and waited for a shot opportunity to arise. My wait was short and I was presented with a frontal chest shot at 45 to 50 yards with Mr. Furry on all fours and looking in my direction. I disengaged the safety and Slowly... I squeezed the GRT III trigger.  The rifle barked only once. The 15.4gr Red Fire pellet slammed into his center chest area below the throat, destroying his heart and lungs and exiting in front of his rear right leg slightly in front of his haunches. It appeared that he had jumped to the ground and I thought that I had missed my intended target. I assumed it was a clean miss and he had escaped into the nearby woods. When I reached the area where he had been reposed I found him "Dead Right There " on the ground below his former perch.  The Requiem tune had been played with the Benjamin 1100XL and If there had been a "Death Dance", it had gone Unseen.   I retrieved my Black Furry Squirrel and GOT THE HECK OUT OF THE RAIN.

At 6:30 this evening I went in to the kitchen to make a sandwich and spotted another squirrel in the same general area as the one this morning, from the same kitchen window. The shooting scenario went down about the same as this morning with the exceptions of #1: He was Gray and not Black #2: He was sitting up on my split rail fence, for a quarrying away shot and #3: He was about 35 yards away, a good 10 - 15  yards closer than this morning. The Gamo Red Fire 22cal 15.4gr Hunting Pellet struck the squirrel in the left front shoulder and passed thru and exited his lower rib cage, just below & behind his right front leg. The heart & lungs were destroyed by the red fire pellet.  I had used the same gun with the same pellets and shot from the same position in my garage as this morning. "The Requiem Bell Tolled" for "A Mr Furry"  once again, this afternoon. (Most likely one of this mornings victim's, close friend or relative.)    It appearers as if the squirrels are using my split rail fence as a pathway or highway.  The 22cal Benjamin Trail NP 1100XL did it's work well, for a 2nd time today and... like-wise, the Gamo Red Fire Hunting Pellets. The sky was overcast, the rain had stopped, the winds were calm and the outside temperature was 62F.   Two Squirrels for today and I was not even actively Hunting.   

EDIT: Perhaps I should take the day off and "NOT GO HUNTING" more often, I seem to do just as well, it certainly is less work and I get more sleep !

Nice work Tom. You are absolutely correct about them using your fence as a highway. They scent it, as they go, and other squirrels will follow even if they have never been in the area before. This is the reason I get so many nutters on my property.
