That Varmint probably really is the best bang for the buck.

I mean two bills for for a lightweight classic looking 25 fpe sporter carbine, WITH 3 mags?

Probably a bit much for backyard. But you could add the CO2 version Plinkster for another $130, or even a .177 Synrod for about $400 and still be under $700.

My only concern with the Varmint is the up and down in velocity and that it only seems to deliver 10 shots within 4% of ES, from the chrony strings I have been seeing. If I am wrong please correct me...

Lol, it's only "cool" until you get caught.  I'm pretty sure one is basically a slap on the wrist and the other is an all inclusive trip to a federal penitentiary.   

I'm just playing but I wouldn't want either to be honest.

We are getting a little off track, but it did give me some time to investigate the suggestions given so far. I have now set my budget at $1000 for gun, tank, hand pump (??), and misc.
Scopes I have from other weapons can be used initially.

With Amazon and EBay selling hand pumps, for a bargain, at around $60 shipped, this is something you want to have handy even if you have a tank.

If you decide on a gun that goes over 3000psi, you're going to need a 4500psi tank which will be around $500-$700 new, or you can buy old, used ones off Ebay for sub $200. With a gun that goes to 3000psi, you can stay with the much cheaper, readily available aluminum scuba tank.

Xraycer makes a very good point! I am using a Benjamin hand pump to fill all my PCPS, and it is not a huge problem doing it by hand, some guns are pretty easy to pump and keep full. I usually re-pump after a mag or two, no worries.

But before I start extensive tuning and modding on my new guns or buy an air-hog big bore, or anything that needs a 300 bar, lol, I will get a tank, or two. Once I get tired of hauling the tank(s) for filling, I am sure I'll be pricing compressors, lol..

But, the fact is, most times, a hand pump is all I need. Hope this helps.

A bug in your ear...The Marauder is a perfect starter gun than you can really grow with.  It is so versatile and has tons of Crosman and forum support due to thousands sold.  It is easy to get cheap replacement parts for (which all guns will need eventually).  Only $4 shipping from Crosman and lots of other places to get parts for it too.  Very easy to work on and can be modded to make it your own with lots of aftermarket parts or, DIY mods on the cheap.  Everyone should have at least one in their arsenal because of these facts along with the fact that it has one of the best triggers of any airgun available that many consider match grade or at least close to it and is fully adjustable on both the 1st and 2nd stages along with the pull weight for real customization per user.  It is hard to be accurate with a heavy trigger.

This is one of those deals where spending more $ actually saves you money. I started out buying cheap in a false sense of saving money. If I would go back & add up all the money I spent "going cheap" I really spent a lot more than I would have If I would have bought good stuff to begin with. You will end up in the same place any way. But, it was a fun ride & I learned a lot along the way. PCP's have come a long way lately & even the more inexpensive ones are pretty good.

although I have access to the compressor needed it is still a pain to have to run out get filled sometimes.

That's a good 'short list', for sure...

I own, or have owned, all except the Sumatra, which is also a gun I would like to have, but have no real need for at this time, ha ha!

My Varmints arrive tomorrow, hopefully they will live up to the low-dollar, high-satisfaction hype, lol.
