Scopes can be such a personal thing.
I've got the UTG 3-12x44 compact with the etched glass reticle.
I need some of the scopes to focus close, I found several that go down to 5 yards that look okay, but I haven't ever used the brand before, I don't think..
I was using the prod to kill red wasps in the lawn this past weekend at about 5 yards.

Had this scope on a MM tuned 25 caliber underlever springer, had it on my 25 caliber synrod and now on my 22 caliber prod. The feature I like and use the most on it is the side adjust parallax which will adjust down to 10 yards. It is crystal clear with a large field of view, aside from the weight it brings a lot of quality for the money invested, I would buy another in a heartbeat when I need another scope. On a prod with the shoulder stock, this compact scope is quite balanced, and you aren't reminded of it's weight because of the balance.Model number SCP3-UGM312AOIEW $149 and free shipping from Pyramid Air.You WILL need an adapter kit to go from Picatinny scope base to Weaver dovetail to use the rings that come with this fine scope: UTG .22/Airgun to Picatinny/Weaver Low Pro Snap-in Adaptor 2PCs/Set MNT-DT2PW01
I've got the UTG 3-12x44 compact with the etched glass reticle. I like it, but it's a good 8 ounces heavier than your Airmax, so probably won't be something you're interested in. Scopes can be such a personal thing. If you're looking to save weight, maybe a Vantage 4 x 32 AO would be worth a look. It comes with a Mil Dot reticle, although it's a little thicker than some. Anyway, best of luck with the search. /Steve
Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32. Excellent scope. Long eye relief, clear glass. Being only a 32mm objective, it is not as bright as something similar with 40, but since the glass is clearer than UTG and this level of Hawke, it ends up looking just as good.I have one on my HW30s to keep weight down without losing magnification. Now that you mention it, I may move it over to my P-Rod, since its shoulder stock is a bit long to let me get my eye as close as I need with the Cheapers 6X Bugbuster that I like so well. (other than its short eye relief and fat reticle) It would be PERFECT, and I shoot the P-Rod a lot more than the HW30s anyway.
Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32Twice the magnification, about 2 ounces lighter. But about $100 more. Maybe still too heavy or too much money?Simmons 44Mag 6-21x44 Mil Dot Side Focus http://www.simmonsoptics.com/riflescopes/44_mag.aspx $149, 11.8 ounces. So about 30% lighter and $30 cheaper than your Airmax.http://www.opticsplanet.com/simmons-44mag-6-21x44-side-parallax-adjustment.html
UTG bugbuster. It weighs 13 ounces. 3-9 with adjustable objective and diopter.

For largish pests at close range the reticle should be fine, especially in low light. Thanks for the input!:-) Chickie

I have had scopes that say they will focus to that, and haven't. Sometimes it is just an issue at the higher powers. Good luck with your search and post back with a review of whatever you decided to choose.
