Author Topic: Crosman Challenger CH2009 custom off-center shroud (Read 2230 times))

My Challegner pcp isn't backyard friendly anymore so I was needing a new system to reduce the noise and thus avoid some serious problems with the supreme boss at home (my wife). This is where my 3D design program came to help me out of this problem. My first thought was to put a standard LDC but that required an extension of the barrel and making the pcp even longer so I decided to create a shroud...The main problem with the shroud was the little space between the barrel and the air tube so an out of center shroud was the solution for me... The shroud tube will be made of an 7/8 aluminum tube with thin walls an some internal stuff that I can publish here. With this system the pcp will have the same length and will produce less noise (construction starts tomorrow but I feel quite optimistic about this)

How far past the end of the barrel will the shroud extend?

I had always considered a crescent shaped shroud but couldn't figure out how to build it. Plus I don't have the tools or skills to do it.

I thought if a section of the metal tubing was cut out, flipped and then welded it may work. I was concerned with the metal warping at the weld.

Then I thought the crescent shape could be pressed into the tubing, so no cutting and welding. But some metals do bend well and crack.

Was your thinking along these lines or something totally different?

The real issue is going to be alignment, with a hole in the center, movement is generally not an issue. If the shroud moves (turns) at all pellets will clip.

Yeah, consistent shroud alignment will be critical.

Hi there... the final shroud is 55mm longer than the pcp... Now I'm uploading some photos...

Hi Taso... any design could work... the key is to be careful aligning the bore with the shroud holes.

Hi Phil... yes this design looks pretty well and the best part it's compatible with other pcp from crosman like discovery and the maximus

Exactly... In my off-center shroud the tube and the monocore are fixed to the barrel using M4 and M3 setscrews... to reduce the pellet clipping possibility the main hole of the shroud has been drilled using a 15/64 bit...I've made some tests today (20 shots) and there's no pellet clipping... and the best part... No one heard me!

Today I was at the workshop working in my new off-centre shroud for my Crosman CH2009. As I mentioned before my wife (the chief) was offset about "the noise" coming out of my plinking PCP so after some work finally everything was made according to my original plan and the dang thing WORKS PERFECT!!!!

So here they are the photos:

This kind of shroud can be installed on the discovery/maximus/1322/etc etc...
Any pcp with little space between the barrel and air tube can use this design easily...

Yeah everything works pretty well.. The shroud can be made of any size but I prefer to not extend the pcp length so much

Very nice clean job, well made, and executed.

Likely know this, but it's work a GoogleSearch for Maxim Silencers...esp. the firearms version from 1900-1920's. Are often asymetric....in their case, becasue iron sights were still the most popular choice for shooting.

(BTW: company still listed...but for industrail/oil field equipment).

Thanks Rob... now after shoot many pellets the only annoying thing that I heard is the "ping" of the air tube so I'll need to make my own 3D depinger to solve that issue...The good thing about this shroud is the price... it's only cost me $47!
