Well I shot my crony

As stated in my topic I shot my crony  My son asked me if I could turn the power up on his bottled 2240 I built him for Christmas and of course I said yes lol. When I had originally fished the build I had it shooting the JSB heavies in .177 (10.3g) at an average of 693fps, right at 11fpe, perfect little starter squirrel gun for his first ag. Or so I thought anyway lol. So first thing I did was take it all apart and do a slight bit of valve modification, after degassing of course, and open up the ports a bit as well as adding the frig tube transfer port and a small amount of opening the porting on the barrel and debur. Forgive me but I don't have the exact specs of what I did on hand, but it wasn't a huge change like I did on my Mrod. After all this I reassembled and checked to make sure there were no problems, already gained nearly 100 fps putting it at an average of 786fps, just over 14fpe. Then started playing with springs, trying a few I picked up from Ace hardware, found a few that worked great, but then thought I'd try a short stiff spring that I'd never used before.... dun dun dun problems ahead. At first I thought this would be the trick ticket, although it was a lot harder to cock, it shot great, getting 870s no problem using the stock hammer. Then as fate would have it after I loaded a pellet and started to raise it to firing position it just went of in my hands with the safety on! Wow, wasn't expecting that, thought maybe I had bumped it or something, so tried it again, same thing, only this time it slammed my crony  and to top it off it hit right in the display screen. Well that's not going to work, to much spring pressure the sear can't hold it back, not safe at all especially for a 12 year old. So I switched back to a lighter spring, still stronger than stock, and played with preload and SSG settings, not really sure where it's at now without a crony bit guessing it's in the lower 800s to 820ish.
Well let me know what y'all professionals think and for the time being I'll be price shipping another crony, might pick on up this weekend while the wife and I are in Springfield and go by Bass Pro.

Glad you got that spring switched back out-sounds dangerous.

I too have sent a chrony to it's eternal reward. First time I ever took it out to use it too!

Mine took a hit from a 7.62X54R.

If you haven't shot a chronograph yet...you will.

Basic rule: anything that goes down range sooner or later gets shot....if it hasn't happened yet, it will.  Even the most farful airgunner will have  a brake/ldc/shround "clip",  a managled pellet get loaded, or some malfuction of the rifle send a pellet off in a random direction.

My solution (call it the $120-$125 solution in today's priices) was to:


1. But the model with the detachable read out. Could be wireless for more $, or on a 16 foot telephone wire type cable.  Basically it uts the read out well away from the unit itself.

2. Shield the front of the unit with scrap 1/4" AL or steel.  BUT, make sure it OVER LAPS the edges of the metal housing, so any stray hit will only be on the shielf, and the force transmitted to that shield is transmitted to the metal housing and not the plasitc electronic unit housing the sky sensors.

In the one illustrated, added several layers of foram rubber as a cushion...likely not needed, adn the metal scrap-shied over laps the metal housing...but it doen't hurt a thing, and is just taped in place.

3. Replace the steel rods that hold up the sky diffusers with wooden (or bamboo) dowels.  If you manage to center hit one of those metal rods, it will crack the plastic housing they fit into...thin wood dowel will just break.

Here is the only slight prossible problem: the little wood downs aren't strong enough to bgow the plastic diffusers....they stay pretty much flat while the dowls bow. If it's late afternoon and the sun if to the side, may have a problem with readings.  Solution is wax paper from the kitchen drawer as a side-diffuser.

And it all fits into a plstic show box (tripod included):

Yep...I've shot the shield to test (50 foot pound .22) and didn't hurt anything other than a slight dent in the shield.  Have clipped the wooden dowl rods without cracking the plastic housing the fit into...really don't mind setting this one out at longer tanges (50-100 yards) and getting some down-range information (just lead the read out 15 feet to the side....if you miss by 15 feet and manage to hit the read out, you're one of the most unlucky folks on earth).

I have also executed a chrony. My new chrony is safe so far. My wife suggested I fashion a bulletproof screen from some ballistic glass I have left over from a security project. Nice to know she has such faith in me lol.

  I know it will happen eventually but for now mine is still unscathed after almost three years. That being said eventually I will be in a rush and will forget to follow my routine of carefully aligning the rifle and chrony for best margin of safety (for chrony  ) If you get the master chrony with remote display there is one less thing to shoot and destroy . Good luck and if you find a fiberglass rod just slightly smaller than the bore then carefully  align everything before shooting

One of the few good things I have to say abut lasers on airguns: can make aligning the rifle to shoot dead center though the chronograph AND pringt a group on a small down range paper target a whole lot easier.

Wow C.J. bummer on both accounts both but it's a good thing you went back to the lighter spring.  Maybe a modified sear would be in order if you pursued the attempt again.

I bought a Caldwell Chronograph Light Kit which is IR and was the best money I've ever spent.  With it you can to shoot 6" high and it registers every time. Can plug in to a wall socket or use 4 AA batteries.

Combro works pretty well. I have mine taped firmly to one of my Sumo ldcs. I can move it between my air rifles easily like a portable attachable chrony.

When I'm dialed in I can take combro off the Sumo.

My buddy recently put a pellet into the second sensor on mine. It still worked, but he bought me a new one anyway. I couple weeks ago I clipped the housing right above the second sensor on the new one, hopefully that's the only abuse it sees...

Just thought ....if I do hit it with the slayer with 126gr hp, I don't think my chrono would shake/walk that off.

Good thing the slayer doesn't need any chrono time, 1st when I  got it ran a clip thro chrono and until I change slugs....well the slayer doesn't need to be tested. 

One day I might get my flex 357 in and shot a few thro, and one day I'll get off my lazy butt and do last mod to Hercules 35cal and use the chrono
