Scope stops, all.

I never had a problem with a scope moving on a rifle before. I always used iron sights on my air rifles, rim fire rings on my rim fires and two piece mounts on my center fires.
A few months ago, I purchased a cheap zoom for my Hatsan 100x. Like most of us I've looked at most of the the Ytube reviews. Everybody claims you need a real strong mount and a scope stop for an air rifle. Well, the scope came with dovetail rings so I mounted the scope using them with one of Hatsan's cheepie plastic scope stops.
Now, I probably recall hearing the same scope mounting advice that the readers of this forum do. If you haven't notice most of Hatsan's guns come with a "scope stop." It is mounted at the factory all the way to the rear of the receiver scope rail. The scope stop also comes mounted on a rifle that has so much factory grease in it that it probably does, from constant dieseling, recoil in a "unique push pull manner.".... "Some dieseling is 'normal'" ....
Well, the first thing I did with my brand new Hatsan 100x is take it apart and clean all of that filth out of it. As a result, it was quite a surprise when I found out today that the mounts and scope stop were inadequate. after a few hundred shots i could see that the dovetail mount was gradually sliding along the pica-tinny ...but AWAY from the scope stop. Hatsan's factory scope stops are mounted at the rear of the scope, correct?
Well, I never thought about it when I mounted the thing, of all the people, I should have. At one point in time in my life I owned rather unique and very expensive target scope. That scope had all of its adjustments mounted in a manner where you could see them in actual operation while the rifle is being fired. Part of the mechanism was designed to protect the crosshairs from the guns recoil. How it works is that the entire scope is actually allowed to slide in the mounts. I've seen that thing work about a bizillion times, it's kind of neat. The rifle recoils rearward and the scope doesn't move at all, after a few moment's the scope would slide back into battery. (Search Unertl Scope) So, what I getting to here guys is this. Why would I have ever mounted the recoil stop on the rear of the scope? The scope doesn't recoil, the rifle does and, unless you have cocked and winded it up so much that it explodes, it doesn't recoil forward.
I'm seriously concerned about all of those poor Hatsan and Ytubers again and the problems they have with scope mounting. Is it possible that with all of those factory teks, reps and poor guys making review videos that I the only person in the universe who has taken his air rifle apart and somehow managed to cause it to recoil in a rearward manner?

Hey Joe,
Spring powered rifles recoil forwards(when the very heavy piston starts slowing down) and then rearwards because of the piston bouncing off the last cushion of air at the end of its stroke and the spring recoiling. Think having and aquarium half full with water in your car and then slamming on the brakes. Water would first slosh forward and then on the rebound backward.
This is why high powered air rifles break scopes so easily.

The scope mounting rail on the 100x is weaver/picatinny but they will also take a 11mm/dove tail type. That's the only reason to use the scope stop. If you use weaver or picatinny rings or a one piece mount you want need the scope stop. The mount want move but the scope could move inside the mount but probably not.
The weaver scope rails on the Hatsans are to far forward for good eye relief. You might find an off-set mount better.
Check out Pyramyd Air and click navigation then click accessories then scope mounts. Click one piece mounts weaver/picatinny. The first one top of page. Leapers Accushot 1-pc. offset mount w/ weaver/picatinny mount. $12.97. PA part number PY-A-1826. I use that on my Hatsan 155, 135 and Dominator. Works great.

Thanks Lefteye You did my shopping and tested the product for me.
For the moment, I'll just have to relocate the scope stop to the wrong side of the scope. If for no other reason, I didn't bother to think about it the first time and then there is that other reason, I made the mistake of saying something about it.
You know, they give us kids BB guns and say something like, "It sure will be a surprise when you have to do the work for it." and then you grow up and really are surprised that you are still playing with a bb gun. So, because of that, I'll just have to relocate the scope stop to the wrong side of the scope mount, otherwise, I would risk ruining the surprise.
Cautionary notice: Just because God said you will Honor your Mother and your Father does not imply that the whole world could end just because you are a spoiled brat and your bb gun is broken.

Actually guys, it's because the gun recoils and then stops abruptly as the piston hits bottom. It's that hard hitting hammer that pounds the scope mounts off the gun.
It's about the same effect as repeatedly pounding on the butt of the gun with a mallet the same size and weight as the piston.
While I was thinking about, I did "just have to" try it. (Hey, it's an adult bb gun, kid.)...... and the factory's location for the scope stop did prove to be correct. Within five shots the scope slid rearward about an eighth of an inch toward the rear of the receiver.
So, for anyone that was thinking like I was, there is the result. It's because the gun accelerates and recoils at one rate of speed and then the steel piston hits bottom stopping the rearward acceleration much too abruptly for a .22lr dovetail scope mounting method. (Which could be free energy or perpetual motion, I just haven't found the guy who knows out how to turn the gravity off yet.) We already know that the same mounting method isn't strong enough for most rifles/shotguns so it's weaknesses presented themselves in that manner.
