Noobie here with a question?

Started looking into air rifles 2 weeks ago for target practice in the backyard and survival/hunting. While at my LGS i noticed on his old rifle rack a Beeman RX with scope in .20 for 400 used and next to it a Feinwerkbau 124 Sport in .177 with no price. I asked him what he wanted and he told me he would take 150. Don't know anything about these rifles and even if they work right. What should I look for ? Are they worth it ?

You could buy the beeman for 400.  What is the name of the shop and address?

   So I went back to the LGS and talked to the owner about the Beeman RX and the FWB 124 D. I told him I felt comfortable buying the FWB for 80 to 100, he was asking 150. The rifle is in immaculate condition for its age !!! No rust with some small scratches where the scope was mounted and the wood has some scratches near the palm swell, small dings on 2 parts of the stock.
    I told him it's going to be a project gun because of its age and finding parts for it since they stopped selling it in the 80's was tuff. So went into the archery section to test her out with a cleaning pellet and nothing came out. So we start bargaining and I got her at an out the door price of 50 Bucks !!! So is this a easy fix to tune and get back to life ?
    The Beeman RX in .20 cal I have on layaway and got him down to 300 but am looking to get it even cheaper !! He said they were just some air rifles they had in the shop forever and just want them out for new inventory.

What is a a good piston seal and tune kit for the FWB 124 ? Serial #40530 imported by Beeman to San Rafael, California and is the Deluxe model. I'm a tinkerer and have worked on firearms but not air guns. Is this an easy job or should I have someone look at it and do the work ?

Send it to David Slade @ Airgunwerks. He is one of the best on the 124. Talk to him and see what he tells you.

Here's a teardown of a 124.  http://anotherairgunblog.blogspot.com/2011/09/frank-bs-fwb-124-tear-down-and-rebuild.html  There are some spring guns that you can take down without a spring compressor, but this is not one of them, apparently.  The teardown mentions 4+ inches of preload on the spring; not to be trifled with.

You have so little into it and it's such a fine rifle done up right, I think I would send it to a FWB tuner.

To answer the basic question, YOU GOT A DEAL on the FWB.   Get the FWB fixed and it will be worth a lot more than the Beeman.

The FWB 124, last manufactured in 1989 shows these prices in the Blue Book of Airgun Values
95% condition, $400; 90%, 395; 80%, 295; 60%, 195.

The Beeman isn't worth $300 unless it is pristine.  Should be in the $200 range off the rack.

Beeman RX .20 caliber:
95%, $300; 90% 245; 80%, 205; 60% 150

No used gun off the rack will rate over 90%.  To get above 90%,you have to have boxes, paperwork, no marks or mars of any kind.  98% - you need all of that plus evidence that it hasn't been out of the box except for fondling..

By the way,  FWB124 reference I checked didn't show a 124 SPORT version.  There is an FWB SPORT that is current production - started 2015 list price $1000 so I doubt that is what this one is... 

That doesn't mean there wasn't a 124Sport version made at some time.  It just didn't show as a called out version in the Blue Book.  Air gun manufacturers sell import versions to different companies on  a regular basis and may mark them for a particular importer.  Marked Sport it might have been imported through one of these.   Googled fwb124 Sport - lots of hits that you can check to learn about your toy....

I don't know that much about this area. FWB is a highly respected brand and makes super air rifles so you did good.

Google Beeman RX and read some of the old posts.  The RX was a first attempt at a gas-ram rather than spring power.  It apparently is problematic.  ON the other hand, the RX1 and RX2 that followed on are well thought of. 

Suggest looking at the posts on multiple sites/  If it is an RX1 or RX2 it is probably worth the price being asked.

You mentioned a scope.  What is it?  Be aware that most air rifles with spring power are hard on scopes. They are known to shatter the internals of even high-end rifle scopes that are not modified for use in air rifles.   You will want an air rifle rated scope.

It's marked BEEMAN MODEL RX Made in Germany with THEOBEN on the break barrel, have pics but still trying to figure out how to post from iPad  The scope I think was Tasco or Beeman marked, not sure.

From what I read, the RX was the first generation with a gas-ram by Theoben.  As I said before, it didn't get too good marks.

I recommend that you google it yourself and read what was said about it.  Then make you decision.

According to the blue book of airguns, there is a RX, a RX1, and a RX2
RX description does not include a two stage trigger. 1990-1992
RX-1 description says two stage trigger and a 1 stamped on rear of receiver. 1992-2001
RX-2 description notes laminate stock, improved non-adjustable trigger 2000-
There was also a RX-2 elite series combo that came with a bushnell trophy XLT 4x12x40 AO scope.

For some context, just so you know..........you can purchase a brand new HW90 (.177, .22 only) from Krale-Schietsport......all in, 2-4 days at your doorstep, for $460 US!

Sure its a bit of Apples to Pineapples comparison, Beeman vs HW, and its not a .20 cal. But......its a brand new gun with a warranty. So, for only a $160 more your getting a brand new gun (gas ram!) and taking most of the risk of new ownership off of the table.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just suggesting $300 may still be too high. What would it cost to replace the gas ram a month after you got it? Could you replace it yourself?

There's cost, and then there's value.
