Is my Maximus Defective?

I just received a new Maximus Hunter direct from crosman. The breech is lifted at the front, you can see under it. The barrel sits bowed up slightly with the muzzle angled down. With scope adjusted all the way up it still shoots about 3" low at 10ft! Should I return the gun? The website shows out of stock now. Help.

Look in the breech slot where you load pellets.  There is a very tiny screw that holds the breech down.  It is item #2 in the schematic.  See if it is missing or snapped off.  But your answer is it should not be lifted above the airtube.   Take a picture an call crosman customer service.

From the description it appears the transfer port (TP) is not seated.   Surprising it was not seen during assembly.   Either the TP is cocked or misaligned, or the barrel TP and breech TP are misaligned.

The Maximus has the rear location of the tiny 4-48 screw in the loading port - it is under the bolt probe and very difficult to see.

It looks like the bolt has to be removed to access the screw? I am having a hard time seeing it. I can press down on the front of the breech and it goes down against the air tube. When I release it lifts back up. Maybe a 1/32 or a little more. It held 2000psi fine over night so I don't believe there are any leaks.

I tried loosening the barrel band and sliding it forward to see if that had any effect. no change, breech still sits lifted away from airtube.

I'd guess the transfer port isn't seated right too.

I was able to verify that the screw under the bolt probe is in place. Needed some good light to see it. I fired the gun about twenty times last night but it was getting dark and I couldn't see where it was hitting. Tonight I verified that it is really low. Also, it doesn't seem like it hits with as much power as it should. I shot another Maximus and it was really nice, accurate and hard hitting. Really disappointed with this one!

From your description, it appears that the transfer port is not properly seated. Pull the bolt back like cocking it and look for the barrel port just forward of the leade and you should see a RED transfer port below that barrel port. You can sea if it's evenly seated. You can also loosen the back screw holding the breech then you can unscrew the bold handle. You should be able to back the bolt enough to access the tiny screw that gets rounded easily so be careful. Loosen or remove that tiny screw if able to then try picking the transfer port and see if you can seat it in.

Well, I just sent compete details for disassembly and it is not here.      Do you want it repeated, or has the bolt retracted far enough after removal of the handle, or are you going to exchange the rifle?

Wouldn't take it apart and reinstall.  Idk how different it is from a disco but if it's anything like the disco it will only take a few minutes. Just be careful, that tiny screw can be easy to round.

So I was able to remove the screw and breech plug. Does the gun need to be cocked to move the bolt back out of the way? I didn't unscrew the bolt handle yet.

You need to remove the air tube end cap. Gun decocked, Hold the cap in place as it has a little spring pressure on it still. Remove the rear trigger screw, the end cap will come off since you already have the breech plug out.

Now, you can get the bolt and hammer moved back and access the little screw in the loading port.

No need to degass for this since your working the non air side of the valve...

Since you were able to just push down the breech, if the TP was originally holding it up, it might have fallen out. 

When you re-assemble, do not try to draw the breech down with that little screw.  Clamp the breech to the airtube, then tighten that screw.  Be very careful, easy to round out, or snap it off.

Just in case you got the transfer port out...long side up to barrel short with rubber seal towards valve.

It appears the stock is in the way of the rear air tube cap coming off? At least it looks that way. I think I am just going to call crosman Monday and see about sending it back. Not impressed with the quality of metal parts, kinda rough, lots of little bare spots. Almost makes me think it was a return once already.
