Giving some Springer love to my OLD BEST FRIEND ( Diana 75 )

  Have had the old girl sense @ 1983 and in those 34 years  had times it was shot a lot, then a safe queen years on end 
The seals had failed here @ 15 years ago and rifle sat broken & unloved while newer tech guns got explored & discovered.
Then @ 4 1/2 years ago got brave enough to go into it myself and discover all that is the GISS recoiless system that was used in these once upon a time World Class 10 meter match guns.  Did so with just the minimums done and rifle shot once more but lacked any real freshening up other than new seals and minor lubing.

  Well today was the day the old girl went onto the bench once more, tho this time we were leaving no stones unturned.
major clean, honing of comp chamber, polishing of all the sliding parts, better lubricants, barrel lapping and the whole enchilada of tuning tricks going threw it.





Whoa ! .. had forgot about all the little parts & pieces, springs, levers and pins with clips !!
3+ hours later it's back together. Some fiddling with adjusting linkages and all attributes are back where they need to be with rifle cycling so much smoother than before ... like a vintage watch it go's TICK ... a pellets on its way to target 





Proof positive work & effort was worth it after some sighting back in sitting down with the sticks & bucket doing a fairly quick 5 shots group at 10 meters.  ** Shooting JSB 8.4's @ 580 fps



Been a spell ( over 2 years ) sense it came out of the safe ... Forgot what a HOOT shooting these old match guns are ... near effortless in shooting ( Tho gotta cock it ) being rewarded with a mechanical gun that makes some noise when fired but is absolutely RECOILESS ! 

This the DIANA 75 T0-1 HV 10 meter Olympic match rifle ( Born 1982 )

Great post Scott, looks like you've got it all smoothed out and shooting good again. What spring do you have in it, factory or JM? It looks like JM piston seals, what breech seal are you using? And are the chrony #'s any different from before. You've got a beautiful 75 there...and a classic at that.

I hope to go thru mine some day and learn the Giss system, and do the same as you, polish it all up, and
relube everything with krytox.

Great post Scott, looks like you've got it all smoothed out and shooting good again. What spring do you have in it, factory or JM? It looks like JM piston seals, what breech seal are you using? And are the chrony #'s any different from before. You've got a beautiful 75 there...and a classic at that.

So many years later the OEM 3 spring w/ centering guide still in place.
Macarri seals .. well one seal, 1 guide
Conventional Moly blend lube used that was applied threw out, Piston, Springs, Gear racks running is such close proximity all lubed so cross contamination simply was not an issue short term or long. ( Not going back in within my lifetime )
Breech seal/s made myself utilizing Polyurethane rod machined to size ... when first serviced little was available, so with research found @ specs and made due making replacement/s. 
All done picked up a 15-25 FPS with the modern seals and super slippery moly lubrication.
Honestly POWER is NOT the name of the game with these guns & consistency / smoothness is !! ... on that front kept true to the vintage tech of there intended purpose of modesty & accuracy.

Good job Scott!
They are an engineering marvel as far as air rifles go.....all the weird noises they make but zero recoil and movement when discharged.
I have a small collection of them and enjoy them very much....great shooters!

The giss system is interesting from a historical perspective but I find the design overly fussy and inefficient. I don't believe the Giss  airguns were particularly successful in competition and din't really make a large contribution to airgun design. I own and have rebuilt a Diana 6m pistol. Tolerances are very critical to prevent the gun from pulling itself apart and the quality of manufacturing is kind of rough. Indicative of the era the guns were made, many of the rifles had nice wood.
The Giss system was pretty much a dead end in airgun development.

Original owner ... In all honesty the gun likely has LESS than 10 tins ever shot threw it ... It is clean !

The Giss system was pretty much a dead end in airgun development.

Point is .. they were made, and what they are by design stands independent of successes had or otherwise
To see one and shoot one is a treat ... as are Wiscombe recoiless springers ... Wankle rotary engine cars etc ...
There historically important because they were different, worked well and DID NOT evolve or become common place.

We have a shooter (Ed) at Diablo that kicks serious fanny at silly wet with his recoiless Diana. The trigger is to die for....IMHO
