I'm digging the idea of a shorter-barreled carbine pumper.  I'll keep mine longer than this fine example, but not much-  an inch or 2 longer so it easily holds my LDC, though I'll start off with a full length barrel first.

Mine is way shorter because I had to cut off the 1377 "lead in" and transfer port hole and recrown it. It ends right before the  barrel band. I wanted to add a funky looking muzzlebrake from ebay but ran out of barrel.

In general yes. There are a lot of variables to consider. Mine is a one hole gun at 10 meters with them old Tech Force pointed pellets. I was really confused at first because I didnt know where the pellets were going. I even shanked the fourth shot on purpose because I didn't believe it. So I went from large grapefruit sized groups to one hole. Remember though, my barrel was a flipped 1377 barrel made to fit the 760.

Usually, but not always.  Short barrel means less efficient use of full charge of air.  But in springers, some guns benefit from shorter barrels as the pellet has exited the barrel prior to full recoil response.  This thread is about laughably bad 760 pumpers, though.  I chopped my existing barrel several times experimenting and it progressively got worse- which is fine.  It's the stock smoothbore, and the pieces I cut off made a hilarious zinging sound when I shot them with my slingshot.  I had received notification my barrels arrived.  The only problem is I'm in Daytona Beach FL, and my home is in Richmond VA    The good news is that I'll be home Friday and have a fun weekend project

Incidentally, short barrel pumpers have their own appeal.  Compact size being a major one, especially when fitting an LDC.  In the end, one must figure out what he or she is looking for in a particular airgun and either purchase or build accordingly.  I know some folks prefer to have large collections, and that's fine.  I'm just a firm believer in keeping the toy collection small so it isn't hard to justify buying another and then selling/giving away something that fell short of desires.

Not for a rifled barrel. But a shorter sight radius makes guns harder to shoot accurately. A 38 snubby is not inaccurate, but it sure takes a while to get a good sight picture to 25yds.

    It's not that simple. I once bought a used old Colt .38 special revolver that was for sale at an indoor range. It was some kind of police model with a 4 inch barrel. Someone had a gunsmith mill the top strap and mounted a scope mount, and it had a two power Burris pistol scope mounted. I had tried the gun out at that range, and happened to have brought along some .38 special hand loads. The hand loads had Hornady hollow based wad cutters over a charge of Bullseye powder. I couldn't believe how well that odd ball revolver could place round after round into the same hole. Must have had a high quality barrel.

Welp, this thread may push me to buy a camo 35 to steal parts from for my metal 880 with no stock, that's in need of a new valve, and has a dented barrel shroud.
I figure the buttstock, valve, and barrel shroud will bolt up. I can then cut the 880 barrel to length. Then with some dremelling and grinding and drilling, the 35 pump arm maybe can become two halves for a new 880 forearm stock??

I've always been of the belief that a shorter barrel is stiffer than a long barrel of the same diameter, thus more accurate.

Well, aside from an OOOPS moment right after disassembly, the new barrel was... a royal pain in the buttocks to get slid into the new alignment piece for the breech.  The barrel's knurling made it a bear.  Next time I'll chill the barrel and lube it with some dielectric grease...

Preliminary testing: the new barrel hurls Crosman pellets almost as bad as the smoothbore.  I filed most of the chamfer off and used a rotary file (twirling in my fingers) to "recrown"... real hack job, but now JSB Exacts are solidly grouping.  3/8" inch group with 10 shots (total size not CTC) at 10 yards, resting only on one bag, 8 pumps.  I feel there's definitely more room to tighten up.

I bet the H&N Snipers will do well.  Surprisingly, H&N Excite wadcutters shot poorly.  Barracudas were okay, not good enough for my taste.

I'll do a proper recrowning and try again later.  Incidentally, the replacement barrel is a couple thousandths smaller OD, so my Rocker1 adapter fit a tiny bit loose, and something clipped an inner baffle enough to lodge inside the LDC.    Not gonna sweat it, just something to keep in mind if you have an LDC adapter you want to mount.

The CP 4x scope I'm using ran out of vertical adjustment, so I need to shim it- not a surprise giving the scope rings (very cheapo freebie rings).


OKAY, the short answer: the new barrel is worth the effort as is.  With a proper recrowning, I suspect this thing can be a one-hole wonder at 15 yards without much effort, and can probably stack pellets at 20 with some real attention to detail.

Great news! I hope it's good for 20, or even 30 yards. 20 sounds better than 10.
No real point in having a scoped rifle to shoot 10 yards.

I've had to recrown a couple of stock barrels that you could tell were bad just by looking at them. Glad to hear it's working out for you. I think you're good for 20. I don't have the space to test past 13 and even then, I can't get into a comfortable shooting position.

I got barrel # 2 recrowned, same lazy way.  I'll probably mount it and chop the first barrel a few inches down. 

Also agree with the 20 yard assessment,  even 30 for one inch grouping as long  as I can clean the crown.  I need to order some H&N Sniper mediums as well as the lighter JSBs... And some RWS wad cutters while I'm at it.  Most of my better 177  pellets are heavirrelevant than 9 grains.

This is an easy way to get better accuracy cheaply.

Yep, the M-4 .177 barrel is a drop-in and you also want the mount.

Parts #s are MK177-010 and 760E-12  ... dunno prices yet, be calling shortly.  If it's cheap, I'll be buying some extras.

I'm happy with the results thus far.  Both replacement barrels are far better.  I filed the knurling down so it would slide into the breech piece more easily, then used some gasket sealant to seal things up.

I'll be chopping 4 more inches off one barrel to make it a micro-rifle... think of a 1377 with better ergonomics and a (albeit flimsy) dovetail.

For the money, I'm happy.
