laughably bad 760

Today I decided to really see what type of pellet my 760 prefers.  This is a fairly new plastic-fantastic 760, one of those $19.99-on-Amazon deals, came with 4 clip magazines and a steel tube with what I assume are lenses.  Believe it or not, the dinky scope works well on my Savage mk2, but that's not what I'm talking about.

My 760 is perhaps the least accurate pumper I've ever used.  I pulled the sights off, attached a spare CP 4x scope, and proceeded to lead the clips.  RWS wadcutters appear to be the pellet, achieving a 2 inch group at 10 yards.  Every pellet brand had fliers, from H&N Excite, Sniper, Crow Magnums, and Barracudas to JSB Exact and Beeman Silver Arrows.  In fact, I had groups of fliers in patterns somewhat resembling a dog barfing pellets at short range.  Think 3 to 4 inch groups with lots of fliers.  Or maybe I should say 3 or 4 inch groups with some clustering more tightly.

I know these guns can shoot far better.  The big question- is it worth it?  In less simple words... it's a $20 airgun that shoots like garbage.

I have one of these too.Pretty much same kinda groups.The gun is $70. here.I shortened my distance to 20' and can hit a pop can every time.lol.It is a fun gun for my grandkids to shoot in the back yard but thats about it.Wish I wouldn't have destroyed the one I had when I was a kid.That one seemed very good but that was 1975.

Lol I can't speak for the new one piece body versions, but mine shot the same way. It was so bad, it was given to me for free. I ended up changing out the smooth bore to a rifled barrel. It shoots really well now. I actually like the pellet clips, hence keeping the plastic reciever version. I own two 760s but I'm actually slightly thinking of getting another metal reciever plastic bolt version to go full mod on.

Now is it worth the $20? For the fun factor, I think it is. I'm sure the smooth bore is good enough for shooting BBs and darts. Also, the sense of accomplishment you get when you mod one to shoot very well is fun too.

One thing about modding the 760 to a "pellet only" gun, I started to miss shooting BBs. Thinking of getting one of them semiautomatic BB shooting UZI looking things.

All in all, I can't really complain too loud about the accuracy I guess.  The fact it can put some pellets in groups at all at 10 yards is an accomplishment.  I just remember my all-metal 760 when I was a kid seemed like an accurate little pumper- using just BBs.  My current one has only seen pellets down the bore, and the real question is if I should spend the money on a barrel.  A part of me wants to just to see what this little gun can manage.  I have a Daisy 25 that is my BB-plinker, so I'm not sweating that.  I just want to eke out better performance out of this 760- and a rifled barrel should get me there.

But if I recall, I need to order from the CCS to be able to order a rifled barrel separately from Crosman. 

the other thing- the cheapie scope it came with works really well on my Savage, so for $20, it's still a win.

LOL.... Betty Lou and I were walking thru Walmart one day and I spotted a whole pallet of them in the feature aisle. I can't remember ( there is a post here somewhere ) I think I paid like $24? each for them? Anyhow, Brought them home and opened the boxes. Scoped em up, if that's what you call that thing that came with them. I think we shot 1 clip each?  Boxed them up and they went back where they came from. Come on Crosman... please stop screwing up all my childhood memories. Just bring one back with the qualities of yesterday. Ya'll messed up Sheridan, then ya wacked Benjamin and now your killing your own stuff. Not everyone wants a CCS or a Disco. Some of us want a quality wood and metal pumper... don't you dare suggest the new 397/392. I mean... you did come close.... until you got to the trigger. And to beat all, you took a Chinese knock off of a Daisy Red Ryder and called it a Sheridan. Ok, I'm done.

If I recall correctly, the Crosman M4-177 barrel is a direct drop in. You might want to do a search for more research information. I made mine when there wasn't a "drop in" from a 1377 barrel.

Yep, the M-4 .177 barrel is a drop-in and you also want the mount.

Parts #s are MK177-010 and 760E-12  ... dunno prices yet, be calling shortly.  If it's cheap, I'll be buying some extras.


edited as Crosman has a new part number///  Barrel costs $9.97 and support bracket is still $1.00.  I ordered 2 of each, delivered for under $26

Mine is also that bad. At 13' I hit a giant rat in the backyard. It was so far off my POA that I researched that it doesn't have a rifled barrel. My 760 being so bad is what got me into "adult" air rifles. I would like to rebarrel it one day for the kids.

BTW, believe BenjiHunter, the rats really do get that big around here.

I put the m4 barrel on my 760,1 in groups at 10 yards .ive only tried cphps.
My local rats hate my 760 on 3-5 pumps
I also pulled the magnetic probe out the bolt and installed a longer aluminium one. This seats the pellet just past the air port.

My rats get about the size of a small cat they were eating fruites. Best shot was a scoped ear shot wit no visible external damage. Wild rats just trigger something in me that makes me want to shoot them or stomp if not shoot. Lol

Funny that you guys are talking about rats, here in Arizona we have these huge packrats, and they become a real problem in the winter.  About two weeks ago I got a call early in the morning from a coworker who was coming off the night shift, who needed help getting his car running.  He'd left a message on my cell phone; something about a huge rat, a serpentine belt, and he needed help getting it back on.  The message didn't make any sense until I got to work and saw what had happened.  When he got in his car at 0600 (still dark and very cold) to start it, he heard a "bump" sound when he turned the key and most of the "idiot lights" on his dash illuminated.  When he opened his hood to see what had happened, there was blood all over his engine, the serpentine belt was off, and there was an enormous dead packrat lying under his engine whose head had been "degloved".  (A medical term, use your imagination.)  The odds must have been astronomical for that rat to be perfectly positioned on one of the pulleys such that his head got drawn in between the pulley and the belt just as he turned the key.  Anyway, there was no damage done, his car had a tensioning pulley for the serpentine belt that had to be pried against from the top while the belt was repositioned from underneath.  (Basically a two-man job.)  He was on the road 5 minutes after I got there.

These rats normally build large nests under your hood.  If food is scarce, they'll also eat the electrical wiring under your hood.  Several years ago I had a neighbor who ended up with a $3500 repair bill after a packrat chewed through the wiring harness between his car's engine and computer.

I'm currently modifying one of my 1377s specifically for packrat duty.  I have some infrared laser diodes, and my plan is to replace the visible laser in a laser sight with an IR laser diode for use with night vision goggles.  (The packrats around here are only active at night.)

Rick, when I was on the Western Slope last year for work (western Colorado, Rifle/Parachute area), the mechanics told me about all the pack-rats.  All of them kept airguns in their cars and trucks just for that with zillion-watt LED flashlights.

Now as far as the WHY that packrats (abd rabbits, mice, and regular rats) eat wiring harnesses?  The insulation is made from soybean waste products.  To rabbits and fieldmice especially, it's like candy.  I've had customers all over the country from the CA Central Valley on east to Ohio talk about this.  And it gets really expensive when they get in SWAT mobile command posts and ambulances/fire trucks.

I didn't know that about the insulation, I always wondered what the attraction was to what I'd always thought was just some type of plastic.  The insulation being derived from a foodstuff, it now makes sense.

I managed to get better accuracy from my 760 by using H&N lead balls.  they were slightly larger than .177, just enough so that they didn't roll out of the barrel when you closed the bolt.  It wasn't great accuracy but better than using pellets or regular BBs.

On a little base outside of Mosul, the rats figured out what the pallets with cases of water bottles were. Go up to a pallet, and every bottle was empty, still capped, still wrapped.

Same base, in our "break room" (shipping container), rats lived under the floor of the can. They were getting out of hand, so we cleaned our snacks to starve them out. I was resting on our makeshift couch when I heard underneath me, CRUNCH, "Eeeeeeee." They were eating each other. I never liked rats, but after that deployment I positively HATE and am freaked out by them.

Though it's been mentioned elsewhere in the GTA, there's a documentary on Netflix called Rats.  Anybody interested in learning more, watch it.  Sobering stuff!

Now, I may be anti-squirrel, but winged rats are my real nemesis.  The short period of time (a little under a year) I was doing pest control, I was the avian abatement specialist.  I've killed an silly amount of pigeon, and believe me, they carry a lot of diseases.  I spent over a month on potent antibiotics recovering in spite of wearing a lot of protective gear, and developed a real dislike for "collared doves".

Anyway, back to the good stuff- once I get the barrels from Crosman, I'll do a proper sighting in and test.  Who knows, maybe I can get some really good accuracy   Gonna have to look at what other cheapie mods I can work out on a 760.  It has 1 feature I absolutely love: the 5-shot clip.  I also like that it has dovetails- works just peachy with my Center Point 4x, though I may swap out to my other Optima 3x9 if it groups really good.  Hopefully it has the accuracy of my 1377.
