1400 Truck Gun

I been trying to hook up a truck gun for some time now. Every time I think I have one stuff happens. Like the beater '69 Dan I bought from our GTA Sheridan buddy. Chipped forearm and most all the metal down to the brass. I polished out the brass and swapped wood on it and peeped it. Then I resealed it and that's where things went wrong... I let Betty Lou shoot it. She dubbed it "Copper" and hasn't let it out of her sight since. Next was a 140 I got from Jim Evans. Once again.. I put a MAC1 kit in it, refinished the stock and it turned too good to put behind the seat. That gun ended up sold. A few others since then. And still no truck gun. So, I been sitting on this 1400 for some time now. I can't even remember where I got it. It has the bolt handle breech and the adjustable front sight blade. It had a pellet stuck about 6" down in the barrel and wouldn't it pump up. You can tell the pump handle and the shoulder stock is cut from the same hunk of wood because the grain matches up perfectly. So, I got the pellet out and cleaned the rifling up. Then put a MAC1 o-ring pump piston head on it and adjusted the head space out. It pumped up and blew a puff of air in my face when I shot it and the TP seal needed replaced. I put a bolt o-ring on it and replaced the TP seal. The plastic barrel spacer is split from the TP back to the rear breech screw and al I have around is enough to two-piece it. The grain is real nice but I can feel it raised a bit and I'll...... OK, HOLD IT RIGHT THERE BUBBA !!! I'm gonna put this thing in that nice little soft leather vintage bag and behind the seat it goes. It pumps up, shoots hard and is typically as accurate as they come.

She's nice Bill. Yea if I decide to keep it a truck/beater rifle I won't refinish her. Once you do that why would you let your hard work get dinged and nicked. That rust bucket Sears 1400 I got fixed up and used that black epoxy finish to the metal I left the wood as is. The time for me to refinish wood takes much longer because I'm across the street from the SF/OAK bay. The wood on yours is nice thought. Upon closer inspection I can see some nicks and such, but not bad at all. The 140/1400 are a great beater rifle. You get that 22 power with a much quieter report. The wood they used takes abuse well too.

Thanks guys. I like the bolt breech much better than the slide collar. The deck on our house is about 12 - 15 ft wide and wraps all the way around. I screwed pellet tins down to the handrail in 6 or 8 locations and I have a stool sitting near each one. Me and that old truck gun patrol the perimeter in search of pest birds and squirrels. So far the only victims have been the various Folgers tubs and plastic soda bottles I have set out as far as 60 yds but, we've only been at it a couple days. Squirrels must be snuggling in the cold weather snap we got going on here. I've only seen a couple and couldn't get a humane shot off yet. Tomorrow is another day.

Yep, I have a 70's Sheridan in the pile with stripped threads in the valve. Once that gets worked out it might join the 1400 in the truck. Or even a barn/bar/shop gun. I have a rack on the 4wheeler that I strap one to whenever I get it out. The boys shot a deer this morning in the woods across from us and I'm just waiting for the call when they find it to come drag it out for them. Plenty of room in the freezer and those boys are happy to share.

Stony and I have a deal working on a trade for one of his 880's. It will be a plinker. I already have a few of the older 880s including an 881 and a 799. Betty Lou has a metal/metal 880 and I just bought another one from Jim Evans this morning. These are and will be our 30 - 35 yds beer can and paintball killers.

I passed one on to him last year, for up and giving me one of his P17's.  It was a metal/metal I scrounged together out of two guns.
 Maybe you will wind up with one to rival Betty Lou's.

That's a good looking 1400 and the furniture is in decent shape so it should be a nice truck gun. I like the bolt style guns also just never had the right one come my way. I have my original 68 first variant sliding door breech that I bought at 12 years old with my grass cutting money and now has the 2240 steel breech and 24 inch disco barrel on it. Then one of my FT club buddies gave me another first variant 1400 that just needed cleaned up and resealed and is my truck gun since it still has some rifling left in its barrel. They are very durable and nice pumpers for as old as they are and I know my original one was abused by me out in the brackish waters of the thousand islands of Cocoa Beach, Florida as a teenager that did very little if any care or maintenance on it except oiling it and wiping the salt spray off it from being in my little boat everyday.
