BSA R10 MK2 evolution

So I have been enjoying my R10 for the last several months since buying it. It has performed flawlessly with very good accuracy taking many pests I used it in its original configuration for a short time just to see how it performed out of the box. Then I tuned it for the best efficiency at the power level I wanted. I shot it with the original shroud for a bit to see how the tune impacted its performance and if it changed the noise level. Accuracy was the same but it was already very accurate so no surprise there. The noise level might have been a little lower but pretty much the same.

Then I removed the factory shroud and added an ldc I made. Finally noise level was where I wanted it and accuracy was as good as ever. After awhile I really didnt care for the thin barrel look and I also wanted to drop the noise even more if possible. My ldc was working great and noise was good but I have a friend who needs pests removed from time to time and they have close neighbors so I need complete stealth so there are no complaints.

So I made the new ldc and modified the original shroud to fit with the ldc installed to give it the bull barrel look. Noise level is acceptable for close neighbor work and its still slightly shorter than the R10 is with the factory shroud installed. I shot a couple test shots into a piece of wood at 43 yds using a table and my hand as support similar to what you would do in the woods using a downed log or stump as support. The R10 stacked them right on top of each other so accuracy is still where it has been The new ldc is 6" long with an OD of 1.5". I really like the bull barrel look with the ldc attached. I just finished the work today so the ldc needs to be coated black.

I am really glad I bought this R10. They are great performing rifles especially for the price you can find them at.

Nice one, the LDC looks longer than 6" - could be the color. If you want it even more quiet you can extend the LDC back over the barrel and shorten the shroud accordingly.

That's a beautiful gun! I pulled the trigger on a black wrapped .177 R10 MK2 from AGD this weekend. Love the looks of them and heard nothing but great things. I really like the shroud LDC combo looks great like that!

Thanks guys. rkr you are correct its just over 6". When I make an ldc I dont count the end caps as part of the length. So with the end caps its about 6 1/2" long. I may do a reflex ldc at some point to see how it sounds but I didnt have the material to do it this time. Dairyboy  im sure you will really like that R10 and you will probably be thinking why didnt I get one faster

A comment on quietness: Once the report is quieter than the meat slap, there's no point in getting any quieter. (and making the gun longer)

Theres a couple reasons you want the report to be quiter than the impact. If the report is quiet enough the target or multiple targets cant locate the threat. So it helps if you have more than one target or just need a follow up shot. My R10 out of the box with the shroud was allot louder than it is now with my ldc. There not even close in comparison. Its allot quiter with the ldc and its shorter with the ldc so im not sure where you got the idea its now longer because its quiter.

As you can see in the pic my ldc is about 2" shorter than the original shroud plus my ldc is allot quieter.

I was hesitant on cutting up the shroud but I figured I could always buy another if I needed to turn it back to stock form. I am really glad I decided to chop it and build the thicker ldc. I think it looks better this way.

You can considerably reduce the slap by your choice of pellets, normal jsb exacts make way less noise than expanding pellets - there's actually not much slap to hear. The ldc can be short and fat and perform just as well as long and skinny one so it doesn't have to add much extra length.

Very nice mods Leland. I bet that additional stealth really helps when taking multiple targets.
Just as an aside, what pellet does your R10 prefer? Is the barrel pellet picky?

Michael my R10 shoots both the JSB 18 gr. and 16 gr. very good. I havnt shot anything else out of it because I dont see a need.

Is the shroud simply cut down and the LDC is threaded onto the barrel and holding the shroud where it is?

Yes it is Dillon. The R10 has two spacers inside the shroud that support the shroud to the barrel. One fits on the muzzle and the other one is closer to the breach. So I measured the distance from the bushing the shroud screws onto to the shoulder the ldc butts up against on the barrel. I cut the shroud just under that length. After I cut the shroud I pulled out the internals and used the spacer that sits between the muzzle and breach for the end support of the shroud.

I cut the shroud .010 - .020 shorter so the ldc is tight agaisnt the threaded shoulder on the barrel. If the shroud wasnt perfectly square with the shoulder on the barrel it could slightly push the ldc to one side as its tightened down. After the ldc is tightened up you simply unscrew the shroud until it lightly touches the ldc. That gives the appearance of a one piece shroud/ ldc combo but guarantees no odd force on the ldc from the shroud.

Nice! Can you tell us how you did the paint? job. Which paint/surface prep?

Yes I can
The paint job is real simple. I prep the aluminum by roughing it with 220 grit wet dry paper. Then I de grease it with a fast drying cleaner thats used for cleaning molds. Then I do a final cleaning with acetone. After that you just spray it and let it cure. I use the Krylon camo paint you can get at your local Ace hardware or other stores that carry spray paint. Its very flat when cured and its actually pretty durable if you get the prep and cleaning done good. Its also pretty cheap and easy to re coat if it gets scratched up. I will be getting setup for ceracote in the near future. That way I can get an even more durable finish for anything I do for other people and a larger selection of colors.
