A Tale of Two HW30S'

HW30S #1 (Miss Peeper) shot AA 7.33 gr. Falcons at 670 fps in original configuration.  HW30S #2 shot AA 7.33 gr. Falcons at 620 fps in original configuration.  Both rifles are relatively new with open sights, prefer the AA Falcon pellets and are as accurate as is the shooter.

Immediately after DIY lube tunes this weekend, using full JM kits and seals, Miss Peeper shoots her AA pellets at 662 fps and HW30S #2 shoots her AA pellets at 631 fps.  Both rifles remain accurate and have smooth shot cycles with a pleasant thunk sound rather than a little twang.

Conclusion:

There is an internal difference somewhere within these two rifles that is beyond my understanding and capabilities.  I am happy with both of these girls and have taken them down and reassembled them for the last time.  (Taking 'em down was the easy part; reassembly, for me, was a painful beeotch.)

Getting the large barrel (block) bolt is always stress for me .

I don't own a hw30, but my hw95 allows for spring replacement without disassembly of barrel to breech joint. Is that what you are referring to as large barrel bolt.

As long as you're happy with your misses, the few fps up or down is not important.

Yes, and if you ever take your 95 down all the way, you will remove the barrel:

Oh I know. I was just thinking that there is no need to touch that bolt if you're just changing springs, at least on my hw95. Takes me all of 15min to change springs, when I was experimenting with JM and Vortek springs.

So what is it you did which increased the speed from 600 to 630ish in the slower hw30? Was it the seal in the end of something else which fixed your fps loss.

I reckon it was the seal?  J M said it should speed up over time, we'll see .

Do the pellets fit the same in the breech?  I have one 30S (the stainless) that has a wider leade.  It does not like 7.33's over the chrony or on paper.  I feed it either sniper mediums or 452 FTT's which it absolutely LOVES.

Thanks, I'll look into that the next time I take them both out.  I've spent so much time with the 30S' , et al, lately, My 97K has become forlorn.  When I opened the safe yesterday morning, there was this sad little voice saying, "Take me Daddy, please, I am yours and I am ready."

Pretty sure it was the 97K, the Diana 52 is long gone.  My beautiful, long-legged Diana 34 may be getting the lonesomes, I'll check on her tomorrow, Lord willin'.

Nope, I'm through foolin' with 'em.  They both do what I want 'em to do with open sights in the confines of our backyard.
