Can't Even Begin to Shoot In This Desert Wind 12-26mph ..

Went out to shoot my 22 Condor SS and see how well the accuracy is with Monsters and Beasts .... LOL, LOL, LOL, LMBO  ..... What a joke ! The wind at 7:30 am was blowing between 12 - 26+mph and I'm sure it will get worse !!!

Yes, you heard me. This kind of thing happens all the time out here in the High Desert where I live. I can easily have 3-4 weekends in a row where the wind will stop you from trying to get a sight setting. If you think I'm ticked off ... ya I'm really ticked off at this.  The wind was no where near as bad yesterday and it blew my Chrono off my truck bed !

Maybe tomorrow the wind will be a bit less in the am for maybe an hour or so so I can get in a few shots.

One of the guys I shoot HFT with in Mission, BC, was at the world championships in Portugal recently. He told us the winds were gusting between 40 and 70km/hour for the three days. With the average target at about 41 metres and some as far as 70 metres, his windage was at times up to 1 metre to one side. I had wondered when looking over the scores reported as they seemed surprisingly low. Now it makes perfect sense. Too bad for you... but try to think of it as good practice.

I'm hoping for about an hours worth of under 10MPH wind, just to be able to shoot. If I'm blown off target when I'm testing stuff, for me it is not fun and a waste of time.

I got everything cut and cleaned up before the blow came in. Now I am cleaning up the mess it made and the extra rain is making that difficult. I don't need a flooded yard this week, still fogging the property daily for skeeters from the last flood.

yep wind is a good reason to want to be sending as heavy of a cast round out as fast as it will stay accurate...But then again dove hunting with a 200 fpe rifle is not such a good idea..

But yep in the 80's and the Nev desert and desert steppes windy days were much more common than still days... and why I dreamed of 50 fpe rather than the 17-18+ fpe my modded Benji .22 had...

even just a 7 mph wind really shortens range that you can make a decent hunting shot at lower fpe...

Not going to get better by not shooting in it....just not going to get impressive  post-pictures.

It's the real-world way of your location, what you likely will have to deal with when hunting...so may as well get some practice in "wind guessing".

I do not mind the wind I just mind the cost of more ammo as I keep needing to adjust. I would like to not care as much ... that's why I am going to try .177 and stick more around 10-35 yard mark. Though I have had luck with my Genesis at 60 yard with the winds and some times I would hit something like 3 GS in a row then nothing for nearly a dozen more shots.

Its a pain but it is rewarding at the same time.

Just ran out and decided to shoot a few --- no matter what ... and no matter what won !

Had a brick 66 yards away and my 5 shots were in a an area the size of a 6 inch pie plate, wind gusting in the 28mph range ... I was impressed on how quite the gun was and the speed in which the Monsters got there, I noticed yesterday too that they fly quietly - there is not a lot of hiss that I normally hear like a normal pellet, meaning that they are not causing a lot of air turbulence ... they were leaving the barrel in the 935fps mark, but I had a lot of pressure in the gun... I'm sure I would have got more speed if she was shooting in the 2800 psi area, not the 3000ish area. I also noticed that even though the wind was blowing and I was shooting 66 yards away, I was only about to 2 inches to the left. Normally it is a lot more than that.

I may buy a 100g hammer later next week, or maybe make a brass weight and replace the steel weight that is in back of the hammer now - don't need to much extra weight for my use on this gun I think ?

I would love too, but the target is an abandon building, and I'm shooting off an old road on the property. If I was strong enough to move this target, I would enter the worlds strongest man competition ;-  )

When it is that windy, move the target up to 10 or 20 yards.  My near zero is usually around 12 yards so that works well.  I more often shoot at my far zero which is around 43 yards when the wind is calm.

I feel your pain.  When I shoot high-powered rifles, it is usually up in Tehachapi where they put windmills because there is so much wind.  It really does force you to learn to deal with the wind....

Ray I agree with you, but when the wind blows me and my rifle off target ... that is when I have had enough.

I'm not shooting from a bench, but from a Caldwell Dead Shot bag on top of my truck bed trying to hold it steady and at 60 yards it easily moves the gun 10 inches from one side of the target to another.

I'm not the best BR shooter - I will shoot 4 or 5 shots at my splash plate and if they are what I consider a good hunting group ... that is it. I'm happy with an 1 inch group at 60 yards - In reality the rifle will probably do better than that as I'm pretty shaky even on a calm day ... I'm OK with that with my powerful hunting airguns shooting 1 inch groups --- I won't sit down and tailor a load, measuring as I go .. I would end up pulling what is left of my hair out  ;-  ) As a mater of fact, if I have a new gun, I will shoot a shot at 20 yds, make scope adjustments, take the target out to 60 yds shoot and re-zero. (that usually takes maybe 3 shots at the most , one to get the very close to the zero and the other two to nail it down. If I feel she is shooting well and on zero, that's it .... I'm packed up and out of there.

From there I'm going hunting or practicing for some type of competition,

You should be used to it by now.

If the property you are shooting on is abandoned, just drive around the building until you get the wind behind you back.

I arrive at my location, jump out of the truck set up my splash plate at exactly 60 yards and see where my Condor SS is shooting with 22 cal Monster pellets.

The target is a spray painted white dot 2" in diameter. I'm on one bag and my X hairs are moving from one end of the dot to the other (never said I was a BR shooter) I shoot ten shots with an average of 940fps. My first shots were too the right about 1 1/2 inches, moved the sight setting and was on. Some how my 60 yard elevation was spot on at 60 yds ;-  )

My group was what I would expect with the edge to edge movement I had on the dot ... just about 1 3/4 inches. I know that if I was steady and had two bags set up the group would be in the 1/2ish  inch area - I actually was very pleased, no fliers or anything like that. The pellet, like I mentioned yesterday had no "HISS" or air turbulence sound like many pellets do in flight.

I could also follow my pellet flight and there was no pellet wobble or spiraling what so ever ... very nice. I will may get a heavier hammer (depending on if I change barrels or not) to keep my velocity in the 950fps area with a lower PW setting than the 6/8 I had today, making the gun easier to cock (although it is very easy to cock now, the spring is actually softer feeling than my other condors)

I'm still at a bit of a dilemma if I want to install my 24" barrel I get on Tuesday ... I can get the same velocity, lower PW setting, better air usage, but at a cost of a 6 inch longer gun (with the R&L shroud) I do like a speed of around 950fps with a PW setting around 5 ish ;- )

Although I understand what you're saying as I also live in an area that has crazy hard and gusty winds, I'd just say take it as good luck you get to practice in wind more than the average shooter.
Seriously - it might drive you a little crazy but what wind speed you just cuss at your less than normal accuracy, some others that just shoot in 'good' conditions can't hit the side of that barn in the wind!
I love the wind and its challenge. It's a great equalizer !;)

Great shooting given the wind.  Sounds like your got your Condor really dialed in perfect.

All my buddies used to scratch their heads when I'd go to the archery range on the really nasty days.  The days when water was a couple inches deep walking to the butts, the days the snow blew sideways and pulling back my string was the only way to get blood back to my fingertips.  The days when it barely broke 25 degrees Fahrenheit and I had the only car at the park.  The windy-as-heck days when my arrows wouldn't even paradox coming off my knuckles.  Cruddy conditions mean good practice!  I'm sure there are many folks here that shoot or shot a bow.  No pulleys here; longbows and more recently, a Turkish-style "horsebow" for me.  I have to earn my shots in those conditions, but I love it!
