Marauder, Scope, Rings/Mounts Suggestions

I have been going crazy trying to decide what setup to go with for a Marauder Rifle in 22 caliber.  I may take advantage of a sale this weekend and want to make sure I order something you guys approve of. 

I don't want a scope that's too bulky or heavy, but I want it to provide for good accuracy at ranges up to about 60 yards, which is about what I consider the effective range of the M-rod. 

Here is what I've come up with as my first consideration:

Do you guys think this is a good setup for the 22 cal M-rod?  I want good accuracy without going overboard on a large, heavy scope. I don't really care about the illuminated reticle as I already have that on my P-rod (it has a Hawke 2-7x30 IR scope with the BKL mounts).  The PA representative was very helpful and said he recommends Hawke for PCP rifles and UTG for spring piston rifles.  He says the Hawke scopes have better glass than UTG at that price point.

Please advise.  Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

Personally, for that scope, I would get lower rings:

I have the ones sold at Pyramyd Air and they are a bit high. I have a scope with a 44mm objective, and I think it stands about 3/8 inch too high (actual measurement from center of bore to center of scope is about 2.005 inches).
The ones sold at Pyramyd will work fine, but they are a bit costly for short range quick shots (mine is about a 2.5 mil holdover at 15 yards with a 35 yard zero). The shorter ones will be better for medium to close range (less holdover/under).
Like I said, they work fine, but I think shorter scope rings work better on airguns, given the limited trajectory of most shots.

Upon looking closer, I see that there is no lower 1" ring available, so you might as well go with what you get at P.A. My apologies for not paying closer attention to detail.

Are you sure you don't want more magnification? I have the utg 4x16x44 ao swat on my 22 and love it, picture is very clear at 16x and will give better aim points at 60 yards plus than a 12x. Have mine mounted with the utg tall rings at 30 yards zero, and only needs 1 mil hold over at 50 yards for 1/2 groups. Don't get me wrong though, Hawke makes nice scopes, just up the magnification a little.

I've have the same set up on mine, I love the UTG scopes, IMO best scope for a reasonable price and the rings are excellent.

UTG scopes seem ok until you look through a better scope, then it is hard to go back to the UTG.  They are dark and grainy compared to my better scopes.  I have since sold most of my UTG scopes.

I have a Burris Timberline in 4.5-14X40 that is very bright and clear, very light weight at 15 ounces, but not cheap at $275 but it weighs only 15 ounces and has a decent reticle and can focus down to less than 10 yards.

I'm a big fan of BKL scope rings and that is all I use on my air rifles.  The 1" single strap are only about $20 a pair, but they are solid and hold the scope straight.

For cheap scopes, I like the simmons 44 Mag 6-21X44 with mldot reticle. Lots of great features for less than $140.  The weakness is the clarity at max magnification, but they are still very bright.  And they are very clear at 10X where I set them for hunting.

What are your thoughts on these Hawke rings?

I have the BKL rings on my P-rod with the Hawke 2-7x32 and there is less than 1/4 inch of clearance for the magazine and about the same for the scope. I believe the BKL rings are considered "medium".

I think I will have to go over my original planned budget and based on your suggestion to go with higher magnification. Now I'm looking at the 4-16x scopes with at least a 40 mm objective lens. I'm still leaning toward Hawke, but only because I'm familiar with their quality because of a recent purchase.  My price cap is now "no more than $200".


Thanks for sharing your setups and suggestions.  For those of you who haven't yet, please let me know what you have on your M-rod to give me some more ideas.

I can only tell you how my MRod is dressed.
I'm using a Hawke AirMax 4-12x40 scope (no longer available) in BKL Double Strap rings.
Scope is equipped with a Hawke honeycomb type sunshade.
This gives me 1/2" clearance between the scope bell and the barrel.
The clearance between the magazine and scope is 3/8", room enough for me to get my thumbs in.
Ring height appears to be one inch to center. Can't be sure exactly, bad eyes.
Reticle is the MAP6, which I prefer over standard mildot.
Scope is very clear and has a wide FOV.
I like the higher scope for bench shooting.
Yes, I will be buying Hawke scopes again when needed.

I'm not an expert on scopes but I've got the 44mm Hawke 3/12 Vantage PY-A-4431  on mine and like it... I've also got it on a Savage bolt action .22... I used the Mantis 1" Rings, Medium, 3/8" Dovetail, 4 Screws/Cap PY-a-4509 rings and they seem to work well and are holding tight... I use the flip open scope covers and with this set up on the Marauder it's got about an 1/8 or 3/16 clearance between the scope and barrel shroud...

I really love mine on my .22 Mrod (sold but kept scope) with Medium UTG rings. Worked great with plenty of room. I loved the scope so much I bought another to throw on my WARP. Are they the highest class scopes no. I haven't looked through many high dollar scopes but I have great eyes and can tell of something is alittle blurry and these are CLEAR! Just another option well within your budget. I use it mainly on 10x but the extra magnification doesn't hurt when you want it.
