Recommendation for ratting light
«

For those of you that do ratting can you recommend a red light for night time shooting. I know i have tons of field mice on my property as i have seen the tunnels through the grass in the pastures. I also just got some chickens on the property this year so im sure that they are going into the run at night for any leftover scraps. I have a headlamp that has a red light setting but i dont think it puts out enough light. Im not gonna be taking long shots just 5-30m shots. Im also not looking to break the bank. I would prefer something under $50. I did a search on amazon but nothing really reputable came up and the stuff that did had bought and paid for reviews. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Any light will work as long as it's not too bright.
Red, green, white, blue, they all work fine.
The rats don't care what color the light has.

I use these quite a bit when ratting in the chicken buildings.
I can refer you to over 500 rats who didn't think these lights were anything to be concerned about.
(hint,... They SHOULD have been concerned, hahaha)

I use the cheap harbor freight 27 led lamps for my bait stand. Using the 3 leds on the end of it to light you the baited area. Also I have a Protec Chameleon multi color flashlight that I use to spot them around the yard & trees. The red light doesn't attract as much attention to me from the neighbor's scanning the yard for the lite up eyes.

I use a white Cree daylight (40 watt comparable) led bulb that I've dimmed down by wrapping electrical tape around it. It lluminates the feeder from about 20 feet away and I leave it on all night every night so they get used to it.

If you use one of the red (or green) small led flashlights, and want to mount it to your airgun, I like this mount:
I have 3 of them.
Here is another possibility:
I've only used the green lens in mine so far. The green lens, used on this light, will NOT make the rats eyes glow, but does provide decent lighting. You control how dim or bright the light is by turning the on off switch.
The red led flashlights I've used makes the rats eyes glow, which is an aid in seeing them. Sometimes I'll find the two glowing rat eyes, before the rest of the rat is visible.
The rechargeable light with the various lenses, can be worn on your head. Or it can be mounted via a screw, as it has a bracket with kind of a tapered hole to mount it. I use a basic home made shooting stick just a piece of 1x4 cut to appropriate length. Then, maybe 5-6" from the top (where I rest my airgun) I put a deck screw in it that attaches to the back of the light. The mounting bracket is a slip fit onto the screw. I can use a traditional rifle scope with cross hairs, or, say a BSA RD30 red dot sight. The green colored light makes the red dot stand out well. It's rechargeable, and includes the charger. Seems to last quite a while on a charge. I find my red led flashlights to not last very long on an AA battery, if used on the brighter setting. I put in a new battery, use it, and it will start getting dimmer. I take that battery out, use it in a regular flashlight, and pop a new AA in the red light.
You could take the rechargeable light above, and mount it in your coop, or to something that lights up your area, and use it as a stationary light. Then just take it off every now and then and charge it up. Again, just use a deck screw sunk in to the proper depth to be a slip on fit to the lights mounting bracket. I don't care to use it as a head mounted light very much.
The cheapest way, is get a small red led flashllght, and just strap it to the underside of your barrel. I use a couple of velcro straps that came with a guitar to amp cord I bought. Works fine, and is cheap.
Here is my red led flashlight:
Get some spare AA batteries. These flashlights have a button on the end, and have 5 settings. On, off, dim, bright, and flash. And the beam can be focused for a wide, or narrower beam.
Some say the green light works better for not spooking your target pest. I'm not sure about this.

I made this DYI night vision for Ratting, Works great and cost was about $150.00, mostly Ebay items and some plumbing rubber couplings, the IR light was from Amazon and cost about $80.00. camera is a day/night with 16mm lens $12.00, battery is 12v, 6000mah li-ion $29.00 and a 4" dispaly $15.00, plus misc picatinny mounts and old scope rings for mounting monitor to scope.
