I'm not sure how I got the impression that the Maximus was designed for greater shot count vs power.  Is that the case?

 Question, I have the Maximus, and the only fault that I have is in the trigger, could that be the spring. Cocking is a little tough is that the spring. As far as shooting groups, and ease of filling I think great buy for the money spent (to get into PCP). Now would love to step up to a Marauder .

Check Tom G. pyramydair blog  Benjamin Maximus Part 5 in comments where he stated that 'Crosman put places where spring could be attached to reduce pull weight'.

Reducing friction reduces cocking effort.  Remove all oil and grease around the bolt and hammer and using a disposable eye dropper blow some moly powder in the hole behind the bolt.  Put a rag over the hole for a few shots to keep from getting the bullet lube on you.

The valve was moved back which is one reason for a shorter spring.

The Maximus is OK but you get what you pay for. Had mine 2 days and sold it.

Is it worse than a Disco, and if so how?

JMHO    Moorepower, the Maximus has some advantages over the Discovery.  For example, the barrel is a little longer (two inches) which facilitates the filling operation.  The sling studs are already installed.  The stock is maintenance free plastic.  And the biggie in my book is that the barrel band more forward which offers more barrel support.  If you have both [like I do], then there might be a tough decision when going for a squirrel hunt - which one to take out for some exercise?
I was not back into air guns when the Discovery was introduced.  Maybe some of you senior Forum members could remember back to that time, and let us know how the Discovery was received when it first appeared.

IMHO... if the valve has been moved rearward thats a BIG step back..... the disco platform already has a pretty short stroke and a relative lightweight hammer... so to produce the same power or even to be able to crack the valve on a 2k fill you would need some pretty massive spring tension... which makes cocking a pain in the rear with an even shorter stroke..... so they basically gained a few cc of airspace by sacrificing cocking effort......  pretty much assuring that any real power is going to be limited because its going to get so hard to cock..... also the heavier wear and tear on the cocking pin and bolt which to be honest was barely minimal to withstand a stock disco spring load....

they would have been better served by simply reducing the porting on the valve which would have easily given a flatter shot string and more shots... and kept the longer barrel and newer stock..... *(&^ if i remember correctly my stock .177 disco was super hot at around 970 fps...... a tranferport change to get it down to around 900-915 fps would probably pick up half a dozen shots or more and give a flatter shot string....

but thats all just my opinion....

Dang it! There goes all of my plans for tuning it for power now! That might have just made MichaelM's SSG that i bought useless! Maybe i can convert it to 177 when the Maximus barrels come out. Hopefully i can get the 10.5gr pellets to 900-950fps. I am now actually depressed. I have been having nothing but problems ever since i bought my maximus. My Hill Mk3 handpump is messed up. My only scope bit the dust. Maybe i just should sell it all and walk away from airguns for a bit.
