I picked up a Maximus last month, and have been "tinkering" with it a bit to get the tuning the way I want it. I've made up a simple SSG/FFH for it, and am encouraged by the result. My problem is that I have the SSG/FFH cranked to the point where I have about 1/4" of gap, and I'm still getting higher velocities than I want. The factory hammer spring is 0.045 wire, and is a bear to cock. I'm thinking that a 0.040-0.035 wire spring might get me more where I want to be for velocity, and be easier to cock. Do any of the Crosman line of hammer springs get close to that? I started reading the long SSG thread, but haven't found what I'm looking for.

So i am no the only one with a thick hammer spring. I though i may have gotten a heavier than normal hammer spring. I haven opened up my new maximus but my old one seemed to have a progressive spring. Does yours have one?

No, my spring doesn't appear to be any kind of progressive. My spring is 0.045" wire, 1.5" length, 17 coils, and has no preload. Last night I tried a 0.035" spring that I had, with about the same number of coils, but with a little preload. Very easy cocking, but I could only get about 700 fps out of it. I'm thinking that a 0.040" wire spring might be where I want to be.

I have the TRAKAR 0.040" hammer spring but i havent put it in. The reason i asked was because i think my first hammer spring was defective as well. I took picture and i plan on putting them in my review. But the thickest section on the hammer spring was 0.051" and the one end was 0.038".

What fps with what pellets did the stock spring get?

What's the spring diameter? Going by the length and wire thickness, it is most likely a #10 spring. Check the specs here at McMaster-Carr and find one with the correct diameter and less load. You might even take that part number or specs and see if you can find a single one on eBay instead of having to but a quantity of 6 or more.

I have the hammer spring from my Crosman 1377 in my Discovery. The maximus should be the same. It got the power down to from 23 ft lbs to 19 without an adjuster. When I tried the SSG with either spring I could only get 650 fps which was a little too low for a .22.

You are making me want to put other projects aside and bust open the new Maximus I have sitting in the corner of the Man Cave still in the box. Never even opened it yet.
It WILL eventually find the bench for valve work, light weight hammer, SSG and an LDC but....
Will keep watching this thread as I press onward with my other priority projects.

Just a friendly tip. You might want to just to make sure everything is on the up and up. I know several other people have had problems, but i cant say anything about their problems but i have gotten two bad maximuses in a row. I dont know if you have seen my posts but my current one cant shoot groups smaller than 5 inches at 10 yards. My original one didnt even have the receiver finished. There was no bluing(or what ever they use to finish the reveiver with) and the receiver didnt get machined all the way, it was missing the left scope groove. It had rust in a lot of places. It had problems loading pellets, you had to use a mallet to get it closed. But that is if you even could get it open because he spring was so heavy i had to us both hands to pull it back. I was only able to cock it five times before the bolt and probe just broke apart. My gauge didnt work. I could keep going but i think you get the picture.

Good thing is Crosman has 1 year warranty and Pyramyd has fantastic customer service also. I will take a few minutes to bust open my package and at least look it over for fit/finish and test for functionality.

Your welcome. Unfortunately i got mine directly from crosman. So i didnt have Pyramyd airs 10 for 10 offer otherwise i dont think i would have gotten the lemons i did.

The old Disco hammer spring is 0.035" wire, and used with a bit of preload, should work in an SSG to give about the velocity you want with preload and just a small gap.... If you need a longer spring, use two of them, shorten them, and close the ends so they won't wind into each other....

I'm not sure if that will help much. I might be wrong, and you have much more knowledge of this stuff. Here's my thoughts: The factory spring is 0.045 wire, 17 coils, 1.5" uncompressed. This spring would have a coil bound height of 0.765". I could only get 22 coils of 0.035 wire for the same stacked height. I could get 19 coils of 0.040 wire. The spring tat I tried last night was 19 coils of 0.035 wire, 1.75" long, which required about 0.025" of preload. Not nearly enough spring there. I think that I'll try to get a 0.040" spring. It looks like TRAKAR has the appropriate spring. How are they to deal with? Shipping costs? Minimum order? Any other sources?

I'm not sure what your looking for exactly but I've had great results with a .047 spring in my disco. I cut it down to where I wanted it exactly and now gets 40 shots from 840-870-840 with AA 10.34s.

like bob said .035 is the old spring size.... bob used to recommend a .039 spring for 2100 psi fills( i like the .039 springs) hear a lot of people like the .040 trakkar spring..

a .047 spring seems like it would be massive.....

didn't they move the valve backwards a bit in the maximus??? maybe that heavy spring to compensate for the shorter hammer travel???
