I think a better question would be "will the thin-probe Gen 2 bolt fit he Gen 1?".... With a hot valve (big ports) I'm betting you would see an increase over the flow-through type....

Those are my thought exactly. From the little reading I have done about probe types, the probe out performs the flow through hands down while the retractable probe can't be beat by either.

Although,
Retractable vs thinned probe/shoulder pulled back is very very similar in performance. it's just that the thinned probe/shoulder pulled back is much much cheaper to make.

In fact, the thinned probe is probably identical in performance until you go for bore-size porting.... your probe in a .25 cal leaves 84% of the bore area unobstructed.... so unless the ports are large enough to flow more air than that the gains with a retractable nose would be tiny....

I'm thinking about chucking the bolt in a big drill press, cranking up the speed...  and using emery cloth between the fingers to slim it down.

Might not be as pretty or precise as what some can do...  but might be worth a try???

 a small file is wayy safer/ Its amazing how fast sandpaper or emory in your hand will catch traction. IMO

Someone said the bolt was hardened...  If it's truly hardened, then a file won't touch it. 
If I were using emery cloth, I'd just have a small piece...  maybe a square inch...  not enough to wrap my arm up.  Just looking for techniques.

If a file will work, that would be a good option...  but it won't work on hardened steel.

I used one of those mini files from a set I picked up at Walmart on the stainless probe in my 2289. Wasn't the fastest thing ever, but it did the job. No complaints
