Does anyone know what type of wood the stock on the MRod is made of?

Norm, I read somewhere that it was sycamore which is a relatively soft wood.
Here, I think:

Whatever it is, a strip of velcro I removed ripped the finish and underlying wood off in a nice, big chunk, about half the size of the velcro strip I had attached.
Never had any wood stock do that before. I really didn't care, as I put another slightly larger strip in its place, but the cut, finish (lack thereof, on tip of forearm), and prep work before finish was applied, was and is a disappointment.
Had I not gotten the holiday special, it would have been returned long ago. Holiday season rush-job, I suspect.

I like the grain on my Discovery. It does seem like a get it done quality job they did. It's not bad and it's a matte finish. It's functional and for what it is, that's good. I think they could add another grit or two finer, spend an extra 10 minutes and have a nicer stock. But of course money is part of the equation.
What gets me to some extent is how expensive these guns are compared to real guns. But I don't understand the entire business/costs dynamic there so there may be a good reason I'm sure.
I guess I'm using a Ruger 10/22 as a benchmark in cost.

The reason I was asking is that I am in the process of redoing the stock and I was having the checkering worked on and the gunsmith had all kinds of issues and it took him four times the amount of time he had planned. All he could say was that he had never worked on any wood as hard as that. We both came to the conclusion that the factory checkering was done by laser and it had harden the wood in that area and that he had ran into that once before. Anyway he had given me a price and he stood behind it and now the stock has some real nice checkering and once complete I will post pictures. He is a real good gunsmith and works on some real expensive collector items and has done so fine detail work on a couple of my Parkers and Winchester 101's. So I did slip him a little extra for his trouble.
