I've wondered about the attraction of boiled linseed oil. Making archery bows is another of my hobbies and as a bow finish boiled linseed leaves a beautiful appearance but not so great with moisture control unless sealed with a polyurethane (spar) and/or repeatedly reapplied.Do you regularly re-apply your oil to the stock?Maybe moisture movement within a stock is not as big of a concern as a bow which can lose energy if moisture is absorbed since the limbs bend.
Nice work. Tru-oil is a BLO based finish made for gunstocks. I did a Zastava CZ 99 using Tru-oil. Two weeks of hand rubbing with two coats sprayed mixed 50/50 with mineral spirits. The end result is astonishing. An additive called Japan drier can be used to speed up the chemical reaction hardening the finish much quicker. Next stock I do will get that additive.
To each his own, but I liked the "before" pic the best. Was there a blem that inspired your project?
Isn't the dark areas around the checkering due to the open pore of the wool there? I have heard to cover these areas and only apply a very little there otherwise that area will appear too dark due to to much absorption.
