I pulled the trigger on a Benjamin TRAIL NP.22....(Pyramid).....Ive been reading up on all the info, I just placed an order for the "TUNA" trigger LOL......Any other odds and ends you all think I should pick up........Any and all input is appreciated...........Eric

Being new to the whole AG scene....I wasnt sure what to order as far as ammo.....I picked up a tin of H&N Barracuda match .22 (21.14gr)......Im thinking thats kind of a heavy weight.......and should of ordered something in the 15gr area..........

You might try some CPHP's, mine does OK with them, others seem to love them.
That said, I am still searching for the perfect pellet, you might want to try the sampler from Straight Shooters. I might go that route on my next pellet order.

Congrats on the purchase, I think you'll like it. I think 21.14gr is a bit heavy but give them a try anyway. The XL series has a little more power and mine likes Predators (16gr). I've shot good groups with CPHP (14.3gr), H&N Crow Magnum (18.21gr) and Beeman Silver Bears (12.61gr) also. Since the gun seems to shoot VERY consistant groups with just about ANY ammo, I picked the one that chronied the smallest spread. That's why I went with the Preds. But whatever round you pick, zero with it and stick with it. Changing up weights and styles will definately change your POI. And I agree with the CPHP recommendation. Give them a try, they shoot really well in all of my AGs. They are cheap and available at most Wally Worlds. The XL sends them super sonic though so I have to use a heavier round.

Yeah, I am going to pick up a few different weights, then I will settle with one. Then Zero it and let the GAMES begin LOL. Im not sure about any mods on the Trail NP, I ordered Bobs Trigger last night so thats one thing on the list checked off. Anyone know if there are other stocks available?.......Again thanks for the info......Rifle should be here on Friday.....

Question on the NP with Center Point scopes. Was the rings already mounted to the scope when opening the package? I'm trying to determine if the gun I purchased(From Bass Pro) was new and not returned item. There are alot gouges in the metal on the right side of the barrel at the pivot point. Not sure if this is factory defect or damage from a previous owner.

the best place to get the 14.3 grain crossman premier hollow points, (CPHP'S) is USUALLY walmart... i wouldn't want to order them online, because you can usually get them locally.

21 grain will eventually ruin your piston(gas leak). The XL isnt a little more powerful, it's alot more powerful. It has a higher fps and more muzzle energy with the same round because it has a bigger piston than yours. Not that your NP .22 isnt a good air rifle, but it can't handle 21 grains for very long. I personaly don't shoot any heavier than 18 grain dome with my .22 XL. I know it will harm your gun for a fact, because I watched my best friend destroy his first NP .22 with the pyramid air suggested 21 grain ammo(He quickly got a new one). Plus I own a chrony and have chronographed dozens of various rounds from his NP .22. His magic bullet is the 13 grain beeman field target wich barely out performs the crosman 14.3 domes, wich by the way is the only ammo your supposed to use according to your owners manual. Use of any other ammo can (WILL) void warranty. Hope this helped. Welcome to the fam.

Yah they will. Its pretty simple. If your manual says 14.3 only and you ignore it and go bigger because you feel like it, your piston will eventually fail and when you try to lie and say you followed the manufactures suggusted 14.3 they will say no you did'nt. Why? Because they are no dummies. You would'nt be the first to not follow manual specs, ruin your piston, and then say it was'nt your fault. That gun was designed to work best with crosman 14.3 and it usually does.

oh and as far as putting a drop of oil in your compression chamber every 500 shots or so, your right, I would'nt do that either. I put a drop of silicone based oil in the chamber every 2 or 300 shots. Every time you shoot, air temperatures in the compression chamber rise to around 2000 degrees. That kind wear and tear is brutal on the internal walls. The oil protects the chamber walls from all that punishment. Again, follow your owners manual when it comes to careing for your rifle. Theres a reason they write those things.

Owners manuals are a BASIS to build on. As I see it, a minimum. The guys that write these aren't actually in the field using them. They can write whatever they THINK will be best for the gun. Not every Benjamin (or ANY other brand) will shoot the same ammo well, no matter what the manual says. And another reason folks tear into their guns for a home lube/tune is to get rid of the oil, which is very temporary depending on the amount of use, and to add moly to the internals to help prolong the life of all components.
They also send out packages of PBA ammo with the guns, stating they perform X amount of fps with these. Now, these are the "experts". I for one will not shoot these rounds in my magnum or super magnum AGs, I don't care HOW many packages they put in the box with my guns.
I don't think they can prove WHAT rounds you were firing in your gun and frankly it shouldn't matter if you were returning it for a defect. It's not abusive handling, it's feeding the gun what it shoots the best. You definately need to stay away from too heavy or too light of a round to keep the gun performing over the long haul. That is VERY critical with a springer but not as critical for NP powerplants.

Never said you could'nt shoot different ammo besides what is suggested. My point was, as a newby he should follow manual when in doubt and 21grain is to heavy for the smaller piston in the NP. Again, the rifle was made and tuned for 14.3(fact), so maybee look for a pellet weight closer to that number.

oh, and as far as not making a difference why a rifle is returned. The difference is a rifle returned for a deffect is not your fault, a rifle returned because you pushed to hard, is.

WOW Really 2,000 degree's each time I fire!!! Wonder why my compression tube is never even warm to the touch an my plastic shrouded barrel on my Whisper has not melted yet? Maybe if I put that oil down my powder gun's I'll quit burning my finger's after a run on steel in I.D.P.A.? NAW I think I'll just keep useing it on my club house trap door? But I do Thank all the guy's an gal's on here's combined OH I'd guess maybe a thousand year's or so of knowledge to keep me safe. An we all know NOW what that black powder on crosman pellet's is for, it's a marking compound so they know what we been shooting out of our gun's,Man they are a sneaky bunch over in the crosman lab.!!!An also if I may,you all told me the Nitrogen Piston in my XL was the same as the reg. Trail just mine had a longer compression area(why I didn't need a compressor to take it apart??) I'm all confused now!!??
