Hatsan 95 backyard day

Decided to run some numbers with my Hatsan 95 vortex in .22. Got my UTG 4-16 mounted with the 1 piece rings so I thought it would be a good time to test it. The ground squirrels will be coming out in a few weeks and I need to get this thing dialed in and choose my ammo.

Took 15 shots to warm everything up and make it fair.
Chrono at 10 feet. Clear skies. 39.6 degrees. Swirling wind 1-15mph. Alt 2000ft. "Fliers" indicated by *

SO! With this I realized my fears that my air rifle having some bad issues may have been the ammo causing such sporadic shots because those JSB's held within 6FPS and 11FPS respectively. No crazies. The other ones all had some crazy ones that I just don't get what happened. Still planning a tune for my rifle before squirrel killing begins but even with how it is now I'd use it with those big old JSB Jumbo Heavies. BUT speed and power don't do anything if they miss the kill zone. So lets take a gander at the accuracy. Mind you, I'm a good shot(not gonna lie), but these groups are for hunting. Sitting on a picnic table with my elbows on the table propped up as if shooting prone unsupported; only worse. Also paying no mind to where my front hand was. 

Shot 5 shot groups from 10 yards but if I jerked the trigger or tightened my jaw(shoot slack jawed, actually helps accuracy for me) I'd take another so it was a true 5 shot group. Also, I had already been shooting at this box so the way far off shots are not part of this testing.

So. As you can see, those cheapo Walmart crosman piranha's are kicking butt! 20 yards the wind got really blowing so I shot some just for fun and took no pictures or measurements. The Heavies did great, all landing in the bottom right quarter of one of those 1" circles and the Piranhas were all touching. Again. Tomorrow morning I might jump out there again if the wind is dead. Try some more at 20 yards with a solid rest.

FWIW, the chrono should be close to the muzzle to get the most accurate speed, so you can calculate FPE from that number. I had to re-read the post to understand why your numbers were low, and that's most likely the reason. I have the same gun and these are the numbers I get with my Chrony at 12" from the muzzle...

Do some 5-shot groups near the muzzle and see if your numbers come up. As for the erratic numbers, that's what you get sometimes. The cheap CPHP ammo is for breaking in a gun and knocking over cans. Personally, I don't hunt with it, and only use it when I feel like plinking with the cheap stuff.  Like you, JSB's hold the most consistent numbers and are the most accurate as well.

I read the post about everyone's numbers and I don't know what's causing my low numbers because 9 more feet shouldn't cause a 50-80FPS difference. I'm gonna go see if mine will work that close. If it registers in the same ballpark as everyone else's I'm gonna run some FPE tests at different distances. The software to calculate it is good for some people but I like to be positive.

So 2 things. Just looked at my report, don't know why all the numbers got smashed together. It looked fine when I typed it on my laptop. Maybe it's cause I'm just looking at it now on my mobile. Sorry about that.

And I just chrono'd 3 of the pellets you listed at 16" from the muzzle. Had to slide it back by inches till it clocked it, and I'm way under yours.

Not at 3 yds but at 9yds Expect a 6.5% velocity drop with JSB heavy. If shooting 780fps expect 50fps loss at 9 yds. More so with the lighter 15.8gr JSB it's closer to 7.8% at 9yds

You may have a slow gun or a nicked seal or other problems; but 30-40 fps is NOT a big deal.  Low standard deviation is what you want. ;

PS If you shoot to close to the fly screens on your crony, you will be measuring muzzle blast as well as pellet blast.  2 feet behind first screen is good and be sure to always shoot level.

Guess I'm more used to primitive bows where 160fps is good but 120fps means your design is flawed. Still have more to learn in this field! So what's a good deviation? I wrote it in my log book but it was 11 or something for most those. 6 for the heavies.

Nothing an eXcel formula wouldn't fix, ES:

With ANY pellet shooting an ES of 6 I would not conclude you have a problem with the gun.  Make sure all your screws are tight and try 10 yards again from a paint roller rest...

From what I have read, muzzle velocity is not affected at altitude.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with the difference in muzzle velocity between guns, provided it's not a huge difference. I would be more concerned if the velocity drops over time, which is why I leave my Chrony setup at the end of my shooting bench in the basement, and frequently document the velocities of all the guns I shoot. I've have bad luck with Benjamins losing velocity, but my Hatsans have actually Increased in velocity after they were fully settled in (500-750 pellets each gun).

Start a file folder for each gun, and document ballistics data every few times you shoot. This way you'll see the changes when they occur.

Yes document and test, it used to be easy to keep track ,in my head what my air rifles liked to shoot and what fps etc. now I'm not sure if its my memory, or I have too many air rifles too keep track of, but I keep range cards with each rifle now for quick reference.

Here is what I came up with. I keep one of these in a file folder for each. Of my guns, much like,you might keep a maiñtenance folder for your car or other piece of equipment. I put the pellet info in the blank space and the Chrony data below in he applicable line. When I pull out a gun to shoot, I pull the file folder as well so all its data is readily available, including original sales receipts and documentation.
