Hi Everyone
New to the forum old to shooting but know nothing really about airguns. I currently own a 10yr old 34 and was wondering in a subdivision setting how do you keep the peace without spooking all your neighbors?? Maybe its just me but the 34 seems to make a pretty good crack when fired. I bought this beautiful rifle and never really shot it. Now I'm finally getting the itch. Any help you can provide would be of great use.
Thanks
Jeff

I use 7.9 gr crosman hollow points, She ( the 34 .177) spits them out at 925ish, that sound you hear I hear it as-well, and in cold temperatures it is even louder.
It is not as loud as the pellet striking a critter though, that is loud. mind you if shooting from inside to out they will only hear the wizzing pellet followed by the THWOP. Rob

well i had hoped to bench her in the backyard and maybe in the future get into some of the matches. Her 3rd shot back in 2000 i believe took out a menacing racoon that was bothering my dog nite after nite. One shot and it was over. Not into the killing aspect anymore, i had some life changing things happen to me and prefere not to see anymore more death if i dont have to but that being said I dont care if anyone else wants to hunt .

How big is your back yard ?
I use the basement 21 feet, open window and get additional 13 yards for a total of 21 yards.
built a bench that hangs from rafters, Then stand and bench shoot, set up target under bird feeder and plink away. The native birds like the tit-mice do not even fly away wait till they move and shoot again.Rob

lets see my shooting lane would be about 75ft long and 40ft wide. This with buffers of about 15ft on each end

welcome welcome!
a good trick for not alerting the neighborhood is set up in your garage and open the backdoor and then shoot into a "quite trap" in the back yard. Bye shooting in the garage that will not so good up alot of the sound, and by shooting into the quite trap full of duct seal will help a TON. it will be a little louder for you being in an enclosed space of the garage... but hey....you get to shoot
...welcome aboard Bart

well their are lot of tuning kits out there, and you should get one with a spring an guide an seal for the compression tube, a breech seal can be found at your local hardware store in the plumbing dept, Vortek has very good kit out for the 34's and your probly has a T01 trigger so you might want to check to see if there kit will work with that trigger. I could be wrong about the trigger in this gun being only 10yrs old it probly has a T05.

Welcome to the GTA!
Another way to quiet in down is pellet weight. If you are shooting light pellets you can get close to the sound barrier. That may be the crack you hear.
You can also tune it down a bit with a tune kit.

And the don't forget the lubes

Tons of info here on how to do it.

f86sabjf, chances are your rifle doesn't need anything other than to just be shot.Unless of course you've had a habit of dry firing it. If the rifle has been idle for a decade some of the internal lubes may have dried a little but probably not enough to make any difference, The older 34's didn't come as dry from the factory as they do today so chances are very good that once you shoot a couple dozen shots through her she'll loosen up/warm up and shoot just fine. Check out the GTA Library for a lot of good info on air rifles, shooting and maintenance.Get to shootin' and welcome to the GTA.

Welcome to GTA f86sabjf ,I`m a relative newbie too, but I was thinking that your 34` is maybe too much gun for just being used for backyard plinkin`.maybe a trade in against a Beeman R7 (or Weihrauch HW30s) would be the way to go.The little Beeman is quite pricey, but shoots in the high 500s to mid 600s and with the Rekord trigger unit and CPLs is deadly accurate out to 25-30 yards .It is also a lot qiueter than a rifle doing 850-900 fps + and since you don`t intend killing stuff the loss in power wouldn`t matter. It`s also an addictive and lovely thing to shoot, the 34` is really more of a medium-longer range hunting rifle whereas the the Beeman can be used for target work, tin can killin` and if needed is also a pin-point accurate short to medium range hunter [if you fit with a scope like the 6x32 A.O. "bug-buster"] .
Take care
Kenny

Welcome f86!
I normally don't think of the 34 as loud.
Did you oil it up a bit before shooting?

don't put any oil or any other lube in the compression tube! thur the trsnsfer port hole it will cause bad things to happen to your rifle! I would not recomend any kinda of oil at all in your rifle, if it needs lubed you need to take it apart and do it the right way.

Pistons in air guns work like a diesel engin pistons if you put fuel in there the friction from the piston is gonna go bang and when that happens in an AG something is gonna break!
