Amazing little Bullpup, Brocock Compatto.

AirgunsARP.com was lucky enough to interview Tony Belas of Daystate at SHOT show 2016 in regards to the Brock Compatto.
This fun little lightweight "bullpup" (Not quite a full bullpup, but close) impressed me to say the least, and I had been hoping to get a chance to put some trigger time in on one.

Trenier Outdoors was able to connect me with a customer who had recently purchased one, and I was able to put together a review and do some testing on the Compatto as a result. The full video review including interview comes in at just over 15 minutes, and can be found on my website, linked above.

I loved the rifle. At 6.9lbs (AoA was wrong on weight, and I didn't have a scale with me) without scope, and capable of 30-40 shots per fill in .22 at an advertised 30FPE (from a 150cc air cylinder), I was really impressed. The accuracy and precision was there. This bullpup was great. Except....

Well, when we put this Compatto in front of a Chronograph, the numbers just were not adding up. It was not delivering anywhere near the power it should have been. The distributor asked to have it sent back as they agree something was off with this rifle. When the rifle is returned, I'll be heading back out to do some shot strings and more accuracy testing, so there will be a part 2 to this video down the road.

That said, I loved this rifle, and I feel it'll give the other sub $1,000USD bullpups a run for their money.

The link does lead to my video review, or at least as much as I was able to review with it having some power problems. It should have been shooting at or around 30fpe on high, but it was only producing roughly 18fpe. It is going back to the distributor for them to look at.

I'm really hoping it can hit the 20fpe on low and 30fpe on high marks. If it does, it'll make my quest for a bullpup all that much more difficult.

There are reports coming in from Britain that the Compatto weighs a lot more than advertised, and has a pretty poor quality stock. They mention a lot of flex in the fore end. From the lack of an update there seems to be a problem with customer service also.

I am interested in this gun but the one thing it lacks is a regulator.  So I thought well, it seems to get 30 shots per fill, maybe I could get 20 out of it in the sweet spot.  So I looked at the numbers posted for the 22 version on SShooters and was kind of disappointed.  It looks like there is no sweet spot.  FPE just starts at a high and continually drops.  I can live with out a reg if I have to, but I can't live without at least a flat part in the curve.  I hope somebody can post some chrony strings for this gun in 22 cal.

I had high hopes for this this one too but in the end went with the Hatsan Gladius which I'm still waiting for.

I ended up getting the short Gladius in 25 caliber. Glad that I got the 25. I shot some rock chucks today and have shot many ground squirrels. I also have a 22. The 25 is so much better for hunting in my opinion. I have been impressed with the Gladius but it is heavy. It is really balanced well, compared to a standard rifle, which helps compensate for the weight.

If I can get my computer fixed soon, I can put up the numbers for mine in .177. The plots are fairly level for the first 20-25 shots, then gradually tapers off. Putting a regulator in it with the way the hammer system is set up wouldn't help it. It is fairly consistent and you wouldn't get any more shots out of it. I'm getting about 33 shots on high and 40ish on low.

Thanks for the feedback dv8.  Its good to hear there is at least some level spot in the curve on your .177.  I will be looking forward to the chrony data when you post it and any other comments you may have.  I didn't realize you could not put a regulator in the gun.

After a talk with Brocock, I was able to give Terry some advice. In this case the advice was a slightly high fill than what the guage was showing, as the initial string showed signs of being slightly off. He asked that I post this as he has limited computer access currently:




These are a 30 shot string off a suggested 220BAR fill. I would state for the record that this was on the suggestion of staff at Brocock.

I thought it was pretty sweet. Makes me think they need to find a new source of gauges.
50 shots and still 105bar left is nothing to sneeze at. It's going to an FT shoot this weekend. I'll use the 220 fill. That way I can keep track of shots by magazine.

Thanks for posting the data.  Terry did send me the numbers her got and I put them in Excel.  And I thought exactly the same thing - if he could go up to 220 bar, it would significantly extend the sweet spot.  I will post the original data for comparison when I get home - if thats OK with you Terry.

No problem. Wish there were more out there to see a bigger picture across all calibers.

Well, I ran the numbers and the extra bar fill did not help as much as I thought it would.  It depends of course on what you except as an acceptable spread in fps.  So I just took 40 fps as a goal.

In your original data at 200 bar fill, this can be achieved for shots 1 - 22, (22 shots)

In your new data at 220 bar fill, this can be achieved for shots 2 - 28 (27 shots)

So extra 20 bar only gets 5 more shots while maintaining 40 fps spread. Which, now that I think about it, sounds about right for extra 20 bar.  Even if you could go up a little further in bar, you would drop off the 40 fps sweet spot.  Still, 27 shots for a small tube and tight fps is not too bad.

I'm wondering the same thing. Did the distributor and/or Daystate resolve the issue you were having with the review rifle they sent you?
