IM GOING TO NEED A BETTER BACKSTOP

Went to run a few shots over the chrony today to see what velocity my new Smooth Twist barrel that I put on my MK1 FX Gladiator (MAXIMUS) was shooting. 100% of my shooting in my back yard is on low power (750 FPS) and everything has been fine. Then I switched to high power (978 FPS) and on the 6th shot I seen wood chips fly thru the scope. I guess this is considered the jack hammer effect. Was considering switching to 2x12 wood for a back stop might have to rethink now . That small piece was test piece. Was looking for a quieter backstop material.Tthe steel plate I have up is just so noisy. By the way that was a sub dime sized group @ 33 yards

Ive heard that rubber mulch, foamed pillows and carpet works well. In the past ive used duct seal...while it stopped my pellet it used force rather then friction making my shots louder then my actual gun so that is why i no longer shoot in my back yard.

A square bale of hay, a plastic election type poster board and a tube of Goop. Goop the poster board to the hay. Voila, four different sides to shoot at.

I'm about to "assemble" my fourth indoor 'trap', LOL, in less than a year. Been using cardboard kitty-litter boxes, stuffed with mostly magazines and cardboard. I've been meaning to find some of the mulch that I've read so much about. However, the thought slips my mind once I'm a few mins past reading such posts, LOL.

I use old clothing(t-shirts mostly) and a 2x12 place inside for the backstop. I have yet to shoot through it with the 909 on full power with a 200gr slug. It weighs about 12lbs and is portable. I recycle my lead and this keeps it clean for melting and casting. Just shake out the lead and stuff clothes back in the box and go at it again.

  Hey Brother I have been using a small ice chest filled with dirt as my portable pellet trap, I add pieces of cardboard to the front of the ice chest, thru the inside (taped) then fill with dirt. Reason for the cardboard is to let the pellet enter the ice chest and be captured in the dirt. Works great and is waterproof.

Surplus military ammo cans! I lucked into a flak jacket and use the kevlar in mine with high density foam on top then cardboard so the sticker targets stick to the cardboard.

About 4-6 inches of phone book or magazines will work also. Throw your ammo in it close the lid carrey to your spot open the can and shoot. Burn the phone books aver a pan and theblead melts out so you can recycle it. Phone books are free, ammo can is 10-15$.

I layer all sorts but find towels folded x4 and T shirts really dull the noise, then I use more carpet and wood further back and finish off with thick metal plate or thick mdf ect. Old phone books and books are good too. I just took 50 or so magazines off a mate and I'll pack them in 5 inch piles and duct tape them together.

Just started to build my own, stuffed a beerbox with T-shirts, shirts and jeans and other pants that mysteriusly have shrunken during the past years, stuffed them tight and going to insert a steel plate in the middle, probably with some thick  paste intended for sewage pipes,to make it more silence and not send the bullet back... Then duct tape the hole thing, and  put it on a stump,probably need a forklift to transport it...

For my first target I took a big box and put a piece of plywood at the bottom and filed it with rubber mulch then wrapped it with duct tape and taped a target to the front.

My other larger target trap is a work is process. I took a 2 drawer filling cabinet and made a bunch of modifications to it.

Here's what I'm doing to it....

Remove the drawers

Lay it on its side which will become the bottom of the trap

Cut most of the top side off leaving a 2 inch border all around the sides, this will become the opening to add your filling of choice, save the removed top piece of metal, screw plywood to the removed metal piece from the top, add hinges to 2 inch border and plywood covered top access piece,

Screw plywood to the rear of the trap

Affix heavy duty rubber mud flap/floor mat to the inside of the cabinet and converted drawer opening

Put folding table legs on bottom of cabinet

Fill cabinet with rubber mulch or other filling of choice

Tape targets to rubber mat on the outside of the cabinet drawer opening

Prop access door open to act as backstop for spinning targets placed above above mulch

Having read about the rubber mulch traps on here, I did something similar. As an avid a mountain biker, I had a pile of old bike tubes in the basement that I either never got around to patching, or couldn't be patched. Stuffed them into a box, with a few old t-shirts in front, and haven't had any pellets get through. Works great, and got rid of some of the clutter in the basement.

Just a quick comment on the advantage of rubber mulch being it is largely self-healing.  The bits freely redistribute in the trap, preventing the tunneling effect that pellets have on stationary materials.  When it starts spiliing out, it's time to replace the facer board.  The plastic campaign signs work well for that duty and the price is right.

I built the box out of 5/8 furniture plywood and the face in front of the mulch is vinyl carpet runner that I patch with strips of duct tape when it gets too shot up. About 4" in front of the Vinyl I took a piece of 1 1/2" angle aluminum that I mounted 3 spring clips to hold the targets. If I am setting up a new rifle I  will start at 10 feet and work back once I am sure I will hit paper the sheet rock behind the back stop has a couple oopsies but no biggie since there is 8" of poured cement foundation behind the sheet rock
