Forgot to turn off the ding donger last night at bed time and had one show up about 2300. Snuck out on the back deck and had a good breeze making noise so it covered me. Little bugger wanted the dead squirrel i stuffed in the tree stump and wanted it bad. This was one of the ones that didnt care when he realized i was there so definitly needed to go. Since he didnt care i was there i took my time got on the rail nice and steady. Little bugger was moving alot. Hit it right in the ear. Went down this morning and spotted the blood trail. Looked just like this all the way into a really thick tangle of tree limbs and scrub brush. Will do ag it out this afternoon when i get home. Didnt want to creep into the thicket at 4 am. Cant wait to get home.

I tracked this mess for about 30 yards across my yard and into a thick oak scrub brush pile. I could not see into it at 04. was too dark even with a flash light and I am not crawling into those thick bushes at night when I cant see plus I had to get to work. When it was hit there was no noise it just backed up the hill to the side walk then took about 10-15 seconds to get to my game camera down at the end of the yard and trip it. That blinded my nv scope.

The whole blood trail was as thick as is the pic. Loosing that much blood that fast he did not go far and took his time getting there. At the angle I was at he got hit in the left ear area and exited the throat on the opposite side. I am 99% sure he is in that brush pile. I am pumped to get outa here today so I can go get it.

A fine member by the name of Johninthecamper here on the GTA makes the slugs. I am shooting 45 gr 1E .218 slugs out of my 22 condor. This thing is a hammer and his slugs are precise. They go where you aim everytime.

He has a site called pelletgarden.com

This shot makes the 2nd blow through on a yote head and one heart/lungshot that went all the way through on a fox. As long as I do my part these this setup is very deadly. Loving it!

Man we got home tracked this trail all the way to the tree/scrubbrush and through it. Then down into the neighbors property through it to an abandon 1 bd room trailor. Had to break off there. Not going under or into another persons building. Flipping doody. That much blood everywhere and it slowly walked not ran away and dumped blood everywhere all the way. Maybe a 25 cal barrel is the way to go or just get better at aiming. Also have some 50 gr flat point slugs that got me up to 93 fpe. May zero with those. Dangit! Was gunna be pumped to get 2 in a row. I know he is smoked but didnt recover it. Bummer.

Much Blood doesn't necessarily translate to certain kill, it might be down somewhere and it might not.

Unfortunatly that is true manny. The blood trail was as thick as the pic for almost 30 yards then slowly thinned to a few splatters every couple feet. I think the 50 gr slugs are coming out.

If no better luck with those ill switch the barrels to 25 cal.

That stinks you can't recover it DJ. There is a really good chance it's dead with a shot in the ear and the blood trail you mentioned, but they can travel far and unfortunately they don't care about property lines.

yup, muscle shots bleed like crazy but stop after a little. Maybe didnt hit where you thought and actually went through neck muscle above the spine?

My thought exactly, when you shoot in that region you either hit the brain and there's no running, just a straight drop, or you miss brain, spine and other possible vitals and most likely that dog is still running.

Just because the crosshairs was in the ear hole it doesn't mean the pellet hit the ear hole, I'm actually not a fan of that shot, there's a lot of hard curved skull bone in that area that can deflect a soft pellt easily making a lot of superficial damage and blood creating the illusion of a deadly wound,......if broadside I rather shoot a bit forward of the ear in the region half way between ear and eye where the skull is actually more flat and definitely thinner.

I agree with Cedric and Manny. I am not a fan of ear shots either, but sometimes it depends on the angle. If the animal is quartering away from you and the angle is such that the trajectory would be from the ear diagonally across the brain where it would exit say near the eye on the other side, I would take the shot if I knew that was my only chance and the critter was about to take off. Apparently that wasn't the case here, but I would only take that shot if all the conditions were perfect and the animal was not moving at all. Even then I would aim just slightly ahead of the ear in the skull where the brain cavity is. It's very hard to judge where the brain is in relation to a big ear such as a coyote's which can cover a lot of surface.

Thanks for the info gents! I figured the ear would be almost a hole in the skull not alot of curvey bone. Need mother nature to work faster on cleaning out my other yote skull so i can really get a solid look at it for future planning.

Any reason why you use the bury method? could have a skull cleaned out and ready in a day. boil some water in a large pot and throw the head in with dish cleaner. I like to skin the head first but you can just toss it in hair and all and after a few hrs that will all fall off and you can toss the rest back in for a few more hrs then remove the rest. When I did my deer I boiled it for most of the day, removed as much as i could with a knifeand a few picks and then finished it off with the pressure washer. soak some paper towels in volume 40 peroxide and cover the skull for a few hrs then rinse that off and if you want( I do) cover it in volume 40 creme for a few more hours in the sun or near a heater.

It all depends on the angle of the head at the shot. It also depends on the pellet/bullet going where you thought the cross hairs were at the shot. I dont go for a specific spot like the ear hole or eye because the position of the head is what determines the aim point for a correct solid brain shot. Also some angles are just bad like Manny said if it is a spot with heavier bone and angled you get a bigger chance of deflection. So even if you have the correct poa the projectile could be deflected away from the right spot and into a non lethal hit.

When you shoot for the head and you get allot of blood but no body within several feet its not a good hit. A solid brain hit doesnt allow the animal to travel any distance. If the yote dropped at the shot and was able to make a conscious effort to get back up and then run it was a bad hit and the pellet/bullet didnt penetrate the brain or the correct spot of the brain to incapacitate it.

Im not trying to put you down im just pointing out the reality of the situation. Each shot is a learning experience so take away the lesson and the experience of this shot and replay it thinking about what you could have done different. We all make a shot that doesnt give the result we wanted and all you can do is learn from it. Looking at that skull will definitely help you, but visualize the skull with the hair and muscle in place also not just the bone. By examining it that way you can turn it to any angle and pick out the correct poa for a solid hit every time as long as you put that projectile in that spot.
