Quiet Down Gamo CFX?
«
on:
February 01, 2016, 04:46:55 PM »
So, I kinda went backwards. I started off with PCP's and now playing with springers in the mix. The issue is that my Gamo CFX has considerable more snap and noise than my even my .25 cal PCP's with an LDC.
I inquired to Gamo USA to see if the Whisper shroud was interchangable and they stated it was not.
Any other options?

A good amount of thunk and a bit of a snap/crack. Don't have a chrono, so I can't tell if pellets are going supersonic.
It's loud enough that my wife could here me shooting a few shots on the back porch from inside the house.

If your using light weight pellets that might contribute to the loudness of the shot. Compare to a pcp, a Springer is louder. The piston seal may be bad. If the seal is dry it doesn't take long to burn up a seal. For the twang of the spring, try the pop bottle liner and molly lub. Vortek makes a o ring seal that really works well. Use pop bottle plastic to use in the cut out slots in the the compression tube to keep from pinching and cutting the o ring seal. Hope this helps. Don

mine likes the H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme, .177 Cal, 9.57 Grains best out to the 25 yards I shoot it.
each rifle will be different. if you are shooting the 5 grain pellets I would swap out to heavier ones. maybe try some crosman 7.9 grain as they are inexpensive and readily available

PBA pellets really crack, have you tried lead, is it new? Maybe you've become accustomed to more quiet types.

Not using PBA pellets, using Crosman Premier hollow points, 7.9gr lead pellets. Gun is new to me, but gun itself was made in 2005.

I've got Gamo Rocket & Red Fire, if you would like to try those? Straight Shooters also sell an 18 type sample pack, helps trying different weights, and brands. I use Varmint Hunter HP 1400, .177

Most of the unwanted noise along with vibration in springer's comes from a poor fitting spring guide. The twang etc. sound comes from the spring doing it's dance against the guide. Other factors play a part, piston seal tophat etc. but the guide and spring will create some unwanted side effect's. Light pellet's those under 7.9g will start to create less resistance during the firing cycle and the lighter you go weight wise the more report you will hear from the airgun. ultra light pellet's like PBA's etc. are not healthy for the springer since they do not create enough resistance for the piston during the firing cycle, piston slap which is hard on everything. Too heavy a pellet in springer's can wear down part's too mainly the spring which just runs out of steam so to speak. Better to lean on the slightly heavy side with pellet's in my opinion. Ed

^^^^^^ what he said. Springs are a consumable just not as fast as pellets. Ideally for best overall performance and accuracy you want to keep the pellet sub sonic. Depending on the particular rifle somewhere between 850 and 950 fps if you can keep your groups stacked to a small single hole at 10 yards/ meters and a small ragged single hole at 25-30 yards you have have found a pellet your rifle likes and with slight hold over you should be shooting fairly tight groups depending on the wind, weather and planetary alignment

I have owned my CFX since their inception, in 2005. Probably exactly the same rifle as yours.
They really aren't that loud, in the 12-14fpe class of air rifles. It's muzzle report is about the same (92-97dB),as an electric staple gun. That truly is pretty docile for a rifle in this power class. The newer "CFR" series of rifles, are the same gun, but have the new "Whisper" barrel assy. They also have a tactical stock and the newer SAT trigger. If it's that big of a problem (Muzzle Report), you may wanna look at them.
Edit: The "Accu" series is very close copy of the original CFX...doesn't have Whisper System, so it has the same muzzle as the original CFX. Check out the CFR tho...

Keep in mind that with springers, there's more internal noise than a pumper or PCP. With that noise close to your ears while shooting it, it probably sounds much louder to you than if you stood off to the side while someone else shoots it.
That's what I've noticed with my untuned Hornet.

Be careful when you work on the CFX/CFR/Accu the rotary breach can be very hard to get to seal up if you run the hone into that area of the gun...
