Nordlock washers. Could this be the fix to springers screw issue?

I will report back but it might be a while, we've got 4 feet of snow here in Tahoe and I'm not that avid of a shooter to bare the weather.  I never really had much of a problem with my screws backing out in the first place, I tend to take my guns apart too often and I always clean out the threads and reapply new blue loctite each time.  I just got them for safe measure. The NordLock washer's I got are just slightly larger in diameter than the screw head and they are also flatter over a larger surface area with sharper edges so they do a good job of spreading out the surface contact over a larger area as a cup would do, especially important with wood stock.  Bottom line is I don't think they are going to hurt anything and are engineered quite well, I'm very impressed with the product but the bottom line is will they hold up.

Another update, after several hundred shots the Norlocks are working great!  I'm very pleased with them, I'm going to order a few more for my other guns...

Seems like an old thread...

I've just been putting blue ( medium strength ) loc-tite on the threads. Anyone have success with that?

I ordered them for my  Benjamin Trail NP XL .22Cal. I'm hopeful this will fix the problem.
Be interesting to see if they work because my Hastsan 95 springer and gas piston are another prime candidate.

It seems to me that all the washers used are really washers designed for use with steel. Steel is hard whereas wood or synthetic stocks are soft and wear quickly in contact with washers designed to grip steel. Star washers unless backed by a steel washer will grind away wood and the steel backing washer is usually shiny and slippery. Over tightening can crush the stock material.
The best washer I have used on air rifle stocks are those from a hex roofing screw. Some sort of firm rubber. The compressed rubber keeps a steady tension on the steel thread and doesn't come undone; no grinding away of the stock-- no locktite needed. The washers are perfectly sized for every rifle I have used them on.  The screws do need checking once in a blue moon along with other maintenance.

I do use the star washer that comes with the rifle because it is there. Doesn't seem to make any difference with or without.

Back to square one with trying to use rubber washer then.

Step one: take old inner tube with flat out of [inflatable bike.wheelbarrow/cart] wheel

Step two: grab small piece of pipe with bevel cut on on end or grommet punch

Step three: align punch/pipe with rubber on block of wood

Step four: apply force using small hammer and cut disc out of rubber

Step five: use sharp blade to cut a TRIANGLE opening in center of rubber disc that is same approximate size of screw

~~~ a TRIANGLE worss better than a circle as it grips the screw threads and thus will not slide off! ~~~

Step six: mount rubber disc (AKA "washer") between head of screw and pre-existing metal washer on airgun stock

Step seven: cease worrying about screws loosening


Sure, you can buy rubber washers and fiddle with them.  I find it easier to use what I already have on hand.

NordLock washers are handy on metal-to-metal surfaces with equivalent materials.

I haven't been shooting much but the washers have held out flawless.  I see the post not to use them on wood which is what I am doing but there have been no problems.  I wish I shot more to give a better report...

Been using them on my 350 and they work very well.  They were mentioned by Hector Medina in one of his posts

Nordlocs are fantastic in high vibration applications.  Common "lock" washers are actually worse than no washer for keeping vibrating parts tight.  I used them to attach the sidepipes to headers on my Cobra after struggling to keep the bolts and nuts tight.  The Nordloc bolts are still tight after 2 years and 7k miles (kinda like 70k on a non-fire-breathing motor).

Not sure if they make sizes necessary for airguns, and they are pretty thick, so if you're height constrained they may not work.

Old technology. But I don't know if any rifles use this. Can't imagine it doing any harm. BUt i can see it helping those Ultra magnums from shacking loose

It does seem that the "lock washers" you listed should work better than factory split or star lock washers between the screw head and a flat washer, however, IMHO...as long as the wood of the stock compresses excess tightening of stock mounting screws, or the wood expands/contracts with humidity, stock screws can still loosen up even if "LocTited" to the screw threads. Anywhoo......let us know how it works out for you!

HW95 stock mounting screw torque specs per HW in Germany……….
Front stock screws = 2.5 Nm is equal approximately to 22.1 in/lb
Large trigger guard screw = 5 Nm is equal to 44.3 in/lb
Rear trigger guard screw = 2.5 Nm is equal approximately to 22.1 in/lb (I never exceed 15in/lbs with this small 4mm screw).

Anywhoo I have no stock mounting screw issues regardless of the screw torque using home turned piloted steel screw cups and a steel post set in my HW wooden stocks becausew all my stock mounting screws clamp metal to metal to metal...........
