Hatsan Edge

  I recently purchased a Hatsan Edge in .177 caliber at a Black Friday price of 69.95.  My thoughts at the time of purchase were how could a person go wrong at that price. Well my GTA friends let me tell you how things can go awry. First to go was the included Optima 3-9x32. My reaction was wow what a violent little package I had purchased. It was chronographing 9.86gr Winchesters @870fps.  So I thought I don't need that much speed for 15yd paper punching and an occasional house sparrow. Time for a detune of the Edge. So I dug into the power plant and removed the top hat, at the same time doing all the usual polishing and new lubes and tar on the polished spring. Reassembled and chronied 710fps with the 9.86gr pellet. Still more power than needed in my opinion. So now we install the 4-16x40 CP that was robbed from  one of my RWS 34's. It lasted all of ten shots and then it became another victim of the Hatsan.
   So does anyone know of a scope I might try that this beast will not destroy?

Hammers or UTG. Try bigger pellets to slow it down

Is that Edge a springer or gas piston?

  The Edge I have is spring powered ,thus the top hat that was removed to lower the power. I have tried Hammers scopes, went through two on the Leverage,  each lasted less than twenty shots. Since so many people have had good luck with Hammers, I was really disappointed. Amazon cheerfully refunded my money on both the Hammers and I moved on to a 30mm UTG. I'm very pleased with the UTG 3-12x44. The Leverage is shooting one ragged hole @15yds with JSB exacts 15.89 .  I have tried JSB exacts 10.34gr ,that is the heaviest pellet I have on hand in .177.
  Tomorrow I think I will start removing spring coils, two at a time ,until it becomes a bit tamer. I would put the UTG on the little beasty, but its so good on the Leverage I don't want to risk it at this time. ( I know there are plenty more where  that one came from). Thanks for the responses.

Call Hatsan and see if they will exchange the dead scope for a 3-9X40 AO. If not tell them you will keep sending back the dead 32mm scopes until you get one that doesn't grenade.

I've been wondering what scope to use on my 95 Vortex .22 that I've only been shooting with open sights so far and the Edge Vortex .25 that should be here tomorrow. I don't plan on using the one they come with. I've got 2 CPs. a 3-9X40 AO & a 4-16X40 AO available. Hate to have one blow up.........

    I understand how feel about the 4-16x40 AO CP . Mine had been on the RWS34 for over two years and never a problem. That's why I was rather upset when the Hatsan destroyed it. Not so surprised about losing the Optima as I have noted that others have had a problem with there lack of ruggedness.

I have 2 Edges, both .25 caliber, 1 is Vortex, 1 is spring. The Vortex has a Hawke Sport 3-9x40 HD AO thats been on it a little over 400 shots and so far, it's still dead on at the 30 yards I have it sighted for and hasn't moved one bit even in the 2-piece Hawke Reach Forward match mounts I used to put it on.

This is also the 3rd rifle that scope has been on. It started out on the Mod 95 Vortex .25 I have, got moved after about 300 shots to the Umarex Fuel .22 I also have and stayed there for about 400, then got moved to the Edge Vortex .25.

My Edge Vortex .25 arrived today. It took awhile to clean all the oil out of the barrel and clean it off the exterior as well. The rifle was inside a plastic bag that had lots of oil on the inside surface. Guess that's better than getting a rusty rifle but somebody went overboard. Anyhoo, just had time to do the cleaning, remove the star lock washers embedded into the front screw holes & get flat washers under them and most importantly get the trigger fix done. Ended up with the 8mm screw all the way in to get where I wanted it to be. Took awhile 'cause I thought it'd be about the same as the Webley and started 1 1/2 turns out. Kept turning it in a tiny bit at a time and ended up bottomed out. It's not a Tuna trigger but it pretty good. A 100% better than it was stock! It's SAFE as well. No hair trigger and did the "bump the stock butt" thing many times. Fired it maybe 20 times out the back door and she seems to shoot just fine. Hope to get out to my pole barn tomorrow and get the open sights dialed in.

A couple of weeks ago when everyone was talking about these trigger screws and the Strikers/VMX's/Edges I had just bought a a Striker .25 Vortex and a a Webley .20 VMX springer. Just wanted those calibers in my collection.

I got the 8mm screws and cocked and loaded the the VMX., laid it across my lap pointed down range, removed the trigger guard, started the new screw, moved the safe to fire and screw in the 8mm screw till the gun fired and backed out 1 1/2 turns. (don't try to cock the gun with the trigger guard off) Put the trigger guard back on and checked the trigger pull. Went from 3lbs 8oz to 2lbs 10oz. Bounced the butt off the floor a couple of times to make sure it was safe.

Did the same with the Striker. Screw went all the way in with out firing. Trigger pull went from 5lbs 4oz to 4lbs 3 oz. A few days later got a 10mm screw. Gun fired while screw was going in. Backed out 1 1/2 turns. Now trigger pull is 3lbs 2oz. All of these are 5 shot averages with a mechanical pull gauge.

   I also installed a 10mm screw in the trigger, as well as, a screw to shorten the looong first stage of the trigger pull. The trigger mods have made the gun a lot  more predictable. The trigger could still be a lot better. My major complaint has been with this guns effect on the internals of scopes. I talked with the man in Iowa yesterday and he more or less said its the nature of the beast.  I am a determined old guy and don't give up easily on a problem, so I'll keep working on it.
   I should report that two coils were removed from the spring. Heated, squared. polished. Results were 715fps average with 10gr pellet.

Yep, I'll probably be putting a 10mm length in my Edge as well. It's almost there with the 8mm all the way in but could use a bit more. I'm sure every rifle is a little different.

Hey Dave-What screw did you mod to shorten the 1st stage? If it's something that requires disassembling the trigger pack I'll just live with the long take up.

I bought a refurb Air Hawk Elite about 3 month ago and last Saturday finally got it out and tested and zeroed it. Been so long if something was wrong with it, it's to late to send it back.

But did the same thing, screwed in till it fired and backed out one turn( it's got a hole for the screw ).
Trigger pull went from 5lbs to 3lbs and it passed the banging the butt on the floor test.

With 7.33 grs JSB w/c it's a nail driver. Pushes them avg 995fps.

I picked up a M3X10mm & ended up 1 1/2 turns out like David. Much better and still safe. The 8mm length just wasn't quite enough.

What are guys using in your .25 besides JSB Kings? Those are the only ones I've tried so far that fit half way snug in the breech. H&N Baracuda Hunters will literally fall out unless you cock pointed at the deck. Benjamins fit a bit better, at least they don't fall out. I was gonna order some H&N Field Target to try some lighter weights in 19.91 but I won't if they're gonna fit like the Baracudas. Still haven't had time to sight it in. This weekend?

My 135/.25 likes H&N Crow Magnums, my 1000X/.25 likes Vortex 19.91's (I've read that they are the same as H&N 19.91's).

   I used the write up posted by langheldphoto in this forum. It is titled "Hatsan striker edge trigger modification walk through!!" The only change I made was I ended up drilling a 3/32" hole instead of the 1/16". The screws I had in the junk parts box that would go into a 1/16" hole were really wimpy,so redrilled to 3/32" and installed a heftier screw. Plenty of room for the larger diameter screw. Also remember to drill an access for this screw in the front of the trigger guard.  When I disassemble for the first time I always take plenty of photos . Nice thing about these new fangled digital cameras you can look at your pictures right away and also enlarge them if need be.
   Also must mention YouTube video,"woodfield welsh willy striker replacement trigger". Yes you need to modify the safety, as seen in video. All of these things you do at your own risk of life and limb, and your warranty is now voided. So be it. The rifle cost 69.99 on Black Friday. Spent more than that on a bad date when I was younger( much younger).

Oh yeah, I do remember that post now. I won't be doing that one for awhile though. The 2nd stage adjustment screw can be changed back in a couple of minutes if there's a problem requiring warranty. Not so much after drilling a hole in the trigger, etc. Also PA will let me return it until 1/18 because of Christmas. I don't see that happening but I haven't got 25 pellets through it yet. I can live with the long take up until hitting 2nd stage. Not a biggie for me. Thanks for the post though!
