Performance Unsing Old Co2 Cartridge

Hey Co2 "Users",
A friend gave me some older Crosman Co2 cartridges
However, when shooting my Son's QB78 (.177), at 13 yards, the gun is not consistent
.
Now the cartridges could be upwards of 5 to 10 years old. Could the age of the cartridges be the reason for accuracy issues? Or should I look elsewhere?

It is possible that the cartridge seals may have allowed some CO
2
to leak out, but the CO
2
itself will not have deteriorated.
What type of inconsistencies are you noticing?

Groupings are at about 1.5" at 13 yards
I cleaned the barrel very well and did notice some rusting. Barrel has one rough spot that can be felt with the patch about 1/2 way down, but I can't image it could affect accuracy that much.
Otherwise the gun is OEM; never been touched.

Curious ...
Do you have some new cartridges to try as comparison?

That rough spot CAN and will cause accuracy issues. Get it out whatever way you can. There are others who will chime in on methods to remove it.

Well, if it was mine, I might fill the bore with Evaporust followed by JB Bore Paste.

Really really old co2 cartridges have a kind of beer-bottle-cap crimped on seal...they'll be the ones to leak. Wasn't uncommon to find "dead" ones brand new. Modern ones (and I guess "modern" means the ones in the last 30 years) are better sealed and much less likely to leak.
If you are paranoid about "off brand" 12gr., can get their weight before your use them (kitchen/diet scape works fine), Marks-a-lot the weight on the side, hold onto them once you've used them, and get their weight empty. Will find some brands are evidently not filled with 12gr. of gas...more like 9.5-10.
