Pellet trap comparison Champion vs Do-all??? Which is better???

I was planning on making a trap for basement shooting, but with my schedule lately, I just decided to buy one. I'm looking at the Champion ($69.99 @ Amazon) and the Do-all ($44.99 @ Amazon).

For those of you with personal experience with both, how do they compare? Is the Champion better/more rugged and worth the extra money?

I'll be using this with my .177 pellet guns.

Ted,
 I only have the Champion trap & can't give you a comparison to the Do-All. But I can give you a review of the Champion. I've had mine for over 3 yrs & have left it sitting outside that entire time & I live beachside so it is exposed to salt air constantly. Not only does it not have any signs of any rusting but it has been shot many many times by 50+fpe pellet rifles with no sign of denting. It after all is made for .22 rimfire, so it's pretty heavy & rugged. You'll never have to rebuild this target box ever. Well worth the price IMO.
 Another thing I did was have two new brackets made where you're supposed to clip on your paper target. When using a single clip if there's a breeze, the paper target tends to flap on the corners. I eliminated that by having two securing points at the top. I also don't use clips anymore. I use rare earth magnets. They hold tighter, tend not to get shot since they're further away from the center of the target & they don't rust. I put one at each top corner & one at each bottom corner of the target too to prevent "target flap".

I have the Do All from Amazon.  Like the Champion, also intended for 0.22 LR target shooting, so built like a tank.  Much better at dent resistance than the thin metal Gamo traps (I have shot up a couple of them).

But they are noisy!  Like hitting a bell.  The mulch traps are much quieter.  Or even 0.22 LR spinners which tend to go "thwack" rather than "clank" when hit.

I have 2 of the Do-All traps.   1 bought in March 2013 and 1 in November 2013

both still doing well with no issues.   my hardest hitting gun is my 22 cal disco and I think at peak I had it shooting ~28 fpe.  Mostly it gets hit with much lower FPE.

I don't have either but you could contact the manufacturers to see if one is made of thicker metal than the other.  A smaller gauge is a thicker metal.

One appears to have welded seams, the other bolts together.

Go cheap, get cheap. Some people are happy rebuilding & rebuilding & rebuilding. They don't actually save anything, they just spread it out over time.

I have a .25 Marauder shooting right at 40 fpe.  I took a standard paper ream box, cut it down to half height and filled with rubber mulch.  When stood up I can put two 8 1/2" X 11" targets on it and the Marauder doesn't even come close to shooting through it.  And VERY quiet.

While we're on the subject, ( and as an example of why not to cheap out)  does anyone know of a way to straighten out the deflector plate ( which I only shot with a ruger explorer and daisy 35)  in a gamo pellet trap? Cause as it is the pellets just ricochet back out.

I keep a stiff piece of cardboard behind my targets on my champion trap. I end up with a big pile of lead in front of it from bounce outs.

I tried putting a chunk of the putty stuff in, but they still bounce out. The cardboard keeps them from bouncing too far though.

It sits outside 24/7, and showed some slight rust on the bolts on the outside. I painted it over with primer and its been peachy ever since.

As far as being sturdy, I shoot a 31fpe marauder .22 at it, and the only thing it does is chip the paint off!

    I hope this helps, I use 2x6 cut my legs 24"-30" tall (2) then cut (2) inserts one inner one outer. About 12"   I make a tall box with legs! Then I use a piece of mud flap material, then a piece of 1/8" metal plate. It's all screwed to the 2x6 box. I use a 2x4  at the bottom of the legs for support. Using 2x2 in the front to keep the lead from falling out. I use cardboard as a faceplate, and paint the wood. This my pellet trap for about $20

I had my Champion for almost 20 years outside. I liked it so much I bought another one 3 years ago for indoor use. My friend has both the Champion and the other one you mentioned (the $46 model) and in my opinion the Champion is the best one. If you time it right, you can snap up a Champion on Amazon for about $50-55 (that's how much I paid for mine).

I know there are a million ways to make one and having both a wood and metal shop in my basement I have given that a lot of thought, but like I said, my schedule right now is heading me towards buying one. With the free time I have, I rather shoot than make a trap!

Ted, see the piece that the "bulldog" target clip clips onto? Find a metal shop to duplicate that for you. Because inadvertently you will either shoot that or the clip. Like I said before, if you have two of the them & slide each one to outside upper corners, you will prevent a lot of that problem. And get yourself some magnets too.

I can attest to that! I ended up hammering the clip holder out a couple time, and replacing the clip with a standard binder clip.

The Do-All I have was meant for 22 rimfire as has seen thousands of 22LR put into it.  All the traps I have, from the rag filled cardboard box, to the Champion ballistic curtain, and up to the Do ALL bullet trap, capture and retain pellets from all the guns I have listed.

Nice! One thing I've read about the Do-All is that sometimes the seams are not tight when assembled and lead dust and fragments leak out. Has anyone experienced this? Does caulking the seams solve the problem? I like the price of the Do-All better than the Champion...

Thanks for the help everyone. I decided to go with the Champion and ordered one from Amazon this morning. From my research, I preferred the solid welded construction (seam welded) over the bolted construction. The Champion was a little more money, but it sounded like the better purchase to me.
