Another possibility: your bolt lug may not be protruding enough to reliably grab the hammer and pull it back.  You noted cutting it shorter because it 'came through the other side', but maybe it only needed to be backed off a bit from fully screwed in position.

I know that, during times of design transition, Daisy had made some real red-headed-stepchild guns.

I am playing with a 922, metal receiver and pump handle.
The handle has the spring-loaded latch at the rear.
This would typically latch at the top of a metal, cast in trigger guard.
Not this 'un........
The metal receiver has no TG cast in, but rather employs the separate plastic TG/Safety.
However, there is NO pocket cast into the receiver halves for the transverse handle retainer spring
used with the handles that have a hook to latch over that spring.
Sooooooooooooo the TG is correct for the receiver, more or less.
But..........the surface where the handle latches is not flat.......it is beveled and the latch really can't latch well.....

Strange nix of parts that really don't mesh well......
