I really gone and done it. I bought a 397PA. seller said it needs resealed. no big deal. it should be hereby the time I get back, this weekend.
it looks almost mint, in the pics. not a scratch on it, and, I couldn't see any brass showing through.
when it comes time to tear it down, are there any special tools required to remove the valve? I've never had one in my hands, let alone tried to fix one. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

;D For the record I am officially jealous I want an older 392 or 397

I was kinda torn between that, and, a dan. problem is, the dan's are out of my budget, at least the one's in decent shape. I only paid 100.00 for it. that was the "buy it now" price. it came up as I was cruising gunbroker. it was only listed for about 5 minutes, before I snatched it up.
just got done looking at a youtube video. looks like it ain't much different than all the other crosman pumpers. should be a piece of cake ;D.
-
That looks like it is the same kind as the 392 I had as a teen. You will love it, mine was only my fourth AirRifle ever (the first a Crosman 101, second a unknown moddel Daisy that I never used much, the third a Crosman 2200 that I never made much use of).
I wish I still had all of the AirRifles from my youth (especially the Crosman 101, there is something about a first).

Scott... good find... you'll love it. The tools are relatively simple to make. If it needs a kit, the one PA sells should have the tool in it. If you choose to go with a MAC1 kit, you will get secret sauce with it but no tool. If you can't or don't want to make the tool or order the kit with it supplied, I have 2 of them and if you send me an address, I'll hook ya up with one. I like the one Tim at MAC1 made, it has a big wing nut on it for pulling out the valve. I don't think he offers them tho.
-
Nice fine, what gets more then anything is all the great offers for help. I don't think I would of gotten my Sheridan done without Jon. Here you are getting the same kind of offers to help. Great group of people. You will have to show a picture when you get it.
-
Good for you, Scott. Our early 90s vintage 397A is one of our most accurate air guns and that's saying a lot, since we have some high end springers and PCP guns. Ours absolutely loves Crosman Premier HPs.
-
Don't those have a cartridge type valve? I think you just unfasten it and squirt it out with a quick pump. If yours has the dreaded aluminum valve, I think crosman is shipping brass ones these days, tk

from what I've seen on boobtube, it should be the cartridge type valve. I plan on getting a brass valve if mine turns out to be aluminum.

thanks avator. if I end up needing a tool, i'll pm you.
do the 397's take the same pump cup as the 13xx's?? if so, I have a couple new spares laying around. same for the valve stems, poppets.

that's why I like this forum, so much. we all have something to contribute, and we're willing to help each other out. makes for a really enjoyable experience.

Nope.. different monster I think. I only have the one 397 and I'm trying to think... I do beleive it's different. I can tell you for sure when I get home from work this evening, I have a kit on the bench.

appreciate it. I have time. I won't be ordering anything, until I have it torn down, and know what i'm working with.

That's how it's done! You have to be an opportunist and take advantage of good deals when they are in front of you. I can't believe he put a low Buy it Now price like that on it :o

Hey Scott, the kit I have is for my '69 Benji 347. I got it from Tim. I rebuilt the valve and didn't need to replace the cup. Here is the strange thing.... the cup that came with the kit is a weird dude to say the least. I almost looks like a springer piston seal except the center hole is raised and much smaller. Tim linked me to the kit and I just realized that the cup on his site looks nothing like what I have here. The one on his site looks a lot like a 13xx cup. I haven't had the piston out of my 347 so I can't tell you if this is the right cup or not. I only had to rebuild the valve and compress to cone spring to make it dump all 8 pumps.... sorry man, not much help here. I do have the tool if you need it. Here is the link to the kit I ordered... again the cup he sent me don't look like the picture.

I believe the only ones with the aluminum valves where the 2010-2012 392 and 397s. Look at the date on serial number first 4 digits is the date when made.

looks like i'll have a little research to do, before I start ordering parts. I feel like a kid the week before Christmas. the wait is killing me!!

I will say this... prepare for Popeye arm....

Is it the first three or first four? Mine 392pa is # 5987067xxx I thought it was a May 98 but the first four makes it somewhere in 87?

I've been practicing with my 1377, 880 ;).

Yea its the first 4. The crosman site for dating the gun is down. It should be a letter maybe "M"05987067xxx. So it would be May of 98

Or if you tried to put 14 pumps in a sterioded gun :P :P

I did some testing Sunday for another thread (sorry guys, I haven't posted results yet) I chronied 2 2014 392's and a '70 Sheridan. 4,5,6,7,8, pumps then 5 at 8 and 5 at 5 for accuracy each gun. After warm ups and struggling with poor quality on one of the 2014, and a 12 pck of Miller Lite... my 58 yr old arm coulldn't have been able to wipe my butt. It's supposed to be fun, not a workout.
-
I just bought a 397PA myself, and pumping is alot harder than my 2100 Crosman! I haven't been able to chrony mine (poor weather conditions), but holds air and seems to operate properly. I'd be interested in the numbers after seal replacement.
Not sure about accuracy either... Every few months I forget how poorly I shoot iron sites and need to be reminded. I'm seriously considering the Ballistic Enterprise mount versus sending it to Mac1 for scope grooves to be cut. Otherwise it'll just be a gun rack queen to sit alongside my Diana 36.

Looks NICE, I like the longer pump arm. Mine is shorter and missing the taper at the end. I have been happy with a Red Dot sight. Has a 2moa so nice and small dot and not heavy.

I had a 1997 Benji BS that I modded the valve and sear on. I bought new parts from Crosman in case I screwed something up. Blue Streak Valve $13.99 part#397B032
Blue Streak Sear $1.51 part#397-051. It was easier those last few pumps afterward, more like my 1968 BS. I did the 2 spring valve mod in second link and trigger sear mod in the third link below.

well, it finally got here ;D ;D. actually, it's more like I finally got home to see it, ( I've been gone two weeks ).
remember I said the seller said that it needed resealed? uh-uh. just needed cleaned out and oiled. I got lucky, it has the cartridge type valve. I had it up and running in about half an hour. the gun looks like it's been recently resealed. everything looked new, no hard seals. someone has definitely been inside. it had several hardware store springs in it. the only thing keeping it from pumping was a little dirt on the poppet valve. I also polished the trigger group and installed a lighter trigger spring, right off the bat. the trigger breaks clean at what I think is about 2lbs, no grittiness or drag.
I didn't have any heavy pellets handy, so, I tried it out with some cph's. I'm getting an average of 790 fps on 8 pumps. is this good, bad, or about average?? they're pretty darn accurate, once I got the sights dialed in.
overall, the gun is much nicer than I expected. the stock will eventually get refinished. it looks to have some pretty decent grain hiding under all that dark, mud brown. for now, I'm just gonna shoot it.
i'll take some pics, when I get the chance. I got handed a paint brush, when I got home. oh well, at least I won't have to stare at a bunch of freak dot wallpaper, over coffee, anymore.
-
Good luck with it Scott. I almost had one myself but other junk happened. Oh well, I'll only end up with 4 new to me guns next week instead of 5. If it don't get sold I'll have it as soon as another one or 2 of my current herd sells.
-
thanks avator. other than a lot of little handling marks, the wood is in pretty decent shape. except where " andy" tried to write his name on it, in pen. it isn't very deep, should come out fairly easily. gonna need some paint, as well. all in due time. for now, it's gonna get shot, as is.
-
I am sure it will get more than ample attention.
-
aviator, did you see the one in the gta classifieds?? might be a good deal, for you.

If you are talking about the project gun, yes I saw that. If I didn't have an unexpected spending this week I would be on it. I also have another deal pending for one. That one is on hold as well. I was looking for a truck gun. I thought I had one with the '68 copper Dan until Betty Lou got her hands in it. I'm ending up with a 3rd 140 so maybe one of those will be the new truck gun.
-
that's the one. I'd like to jump on that one, myself, if I had the funds. kinda shot my wad, for a while, with the last one.
-
Congratulations on getting the new shooter. Shooting 790 fps at 8 pumps sounds about right to me.

thanks. glad to hear it's up to par. I've got to pick up some heavier pellets, to try. redoing the kitchen this weekend, so, not much time for anything else. I still manage to sneak off, for a little break, now and then ;D.
-
Yea, I have my share of honey do's too. Owning a home seems like a project that never ends. I sneak off and shoot a little whenever I can.
