Title: My new Walther LGV ....what would you do?
Post by: uglymike on October 22, 2013, 09:09:14 AM
My LGV has developed a spring twang exactly like the video posted by Calmark on the thread titled "my first impressions". I bought it because of that very reason, the sound of silence, no vibration...........NOT! With the 15% return fee AOA nails you with plus return shipping, that will be close to $100 to send it back. Should I send it back and eat the $100, or use the "return fee $$$" and try and find someone willing to tune it?

if you like the rifle tune it! it probably just needs some lube on the spring? from the videos I've seen of guys tearing them down it looks pretty easy to do IMO ;D get some JM lubes and lube it ;) :P

  Has the accuracy suffered any?

With the way that these rifles are shaking out in the accuracy department, I would say tune it, or have it done for you.

It may be as simple as the rifle has slung all the lube off the spring and it is twanging a bit, a bit of good tar or some guide fitting may dispense with that problem.

How's she shooting Mike??? If it's only the twang, and she is shooting accurately, tune that girl!!

I agree with the group. If she's shooting accurately, tune that baby up. Should be a cream puff then!

Thanks for the reply folks. Talked to Umarex, what an unpleasant experience that was! Guy was arrogant, didn't want to address what Umarex website says about silent, vibration free, etc.. This guy said ALL springers have twang! Very reluctantly said send it to us and well have our "gunsmith" look at it, see if there's any twang, if anything can be done. Then to add insult to injury, it'll cost me $$ to pay Umarex to ship it back to me! Honoring a warranty doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. All that feet dragging with what most reviews say is the best break barrel on the planet  ???
How's she shooting Mike??? If it's only the twang, and she is shooting accurately, tune that girl!!
Other than that annoying twwaangggg/buzzzz/vibration it's a keeper in every respect.

Quack!

After seeing one of the brother's old LGV's I would rather not risk time and $ on a new one.  I bet an eager beaver could find a nice old one on the net.

Of course when everyone is zigging it seems I am zagging.

Just Quacking!

Well, since I've only had it a couple weeks I decided to send it to Umarex and see what/if they do anything. If they say it's fine, then I will have to decide whether to sell it or sink another $$$? to have someone tune it. Will keep you folks "in the loop".

People are expecting a "tuned" gun from the box. While it has bearings it will not have a fitted guide. Tight guides reduce twang and speed. Speed sells. First reviews were from the UK which has a 12 fpe limit. Push the fpe up and you get twang.
As long as it shoots, I doubt Umarex will do anything. Waste of money paying for shipping to and from Umarex.

In the review by Jock Elliott in Airgun Hobbyist, Jock mentions that his contact at Umarex said they designed it so the spring wouldn't twang.  You coulf send them a link to the article, although they must have seen it because the LGV is on the cover.  http://www.airgunhobbyist.com/images/AH%20July%202013%20Index.jpg (http://www.airgunhobbyist.com/images/AH%20July%202013%20Index.jpg)
How's the recoil in your experience?  Trigger pull?  Does the break barrel action line up as advertised?
Did they take the same design as the old LGV but replaced some of the metal parts with synthetics?

Unpleasant conversation with Umarex???? I'll bet I know the dudes name!!!
I would call back and ask for Glenn Seiter. I had an issue with a 56 that he handled like a pro!!! Great guy to deal with! Worth your time to give it a shot.
Could the guy you spoke with have the initials A. M. ???????
Hope it works out for you bro.

Sorry of your misfortune!  As has been noted already. All the gun needs is a lube and guide work even by design the twang is free from the factory.   Even the TX suffered twang. New tight guide and delrin top hat and factory spring, twang free.
Hate to see it go back.  They will only do factory replacement of parts and factory specs. No tune, no special work, all at your expense. Free twang again. Jmo

Update! Told you folks I'd keep you in the loop, that's what I'm doing. Umarex exchanged my LGV with a new one. As it was delivered yesterday afternoon in a snowstorm, all I did was take it out of the box and let it get up to room temperature overnight. This morning I'll take the stock off and wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth to remove any condensation, then wipe down with a lint free cloth sprayed with Rem-Oil. Blue locktite the stock screws, clean the barrel, and put the scope on. Haven't fired a shot through it yet.

Well, I got about 150 pellets thru it this morning..........same pronounced spring buzzzzz. Looks like it's the nature of the beast.  :(  Will continue to put pellets thru it and see how it breaks in. Aside from the buzzzzz..... really nice, love the way the barrel locks up, solid, precise, screams quality. Will keep you posted.

Update! I decided to send it to Motorhead for a little TLC. Try and resolve the spring buzzzzz, maybe tweak the trigger.

Got the LGV back last Saturday from Motorhead, now has no spring buzz and he also did the trigger upgrade. Loooong first stage reduced by half. I have a couple hundred pellets thru it, looks like it's going to be exceptionally accurate. I'll keep puttin' pellets thru it, seems to shoot several different pellets well. So far I really like this LGV.

That's cool, I'm glad to hear that you got it sorted out.

Mine developed a slight bit of buzz, but after continuing to shoot, it went away after another tin of pellets or so.
Whether it stays in shape remains to be seen, but in any case if it acts back up off it goes for the same treatment......... ;)

Glad she's behaving now Mike!!!

Mike,
Glad to hear she is behaving better ... The low vibration tune should be LONG LASTING being set up with very light lubrication and NO tar what so ever.  Should also be very tolerant of temperature swings  ;)

Hi all, I have only had my Challenger in .177 a few weeks and only 50 or so shots through it. Funny I noticed a light buzz twang after the first few shots but put that down to being a good ol' springer and thought it may settle down after a bit of use. Took her out this morning for a few shots and no twang at all, just a light thump. She is still bang on target at 20 yards, and I'm off to the 25 yard range tomorrow night to give her a good work out, will be very interesting. Had to tighten the stock and trigger screws this morning which needed a quarter turn to nip them up but didn't go hard on them. My neighbour came over this morning and looked at a tin can I had been punishing and after looking at the holes punched in it with Baracuda Power thought it was a .22..YEEAH!
so far so good  ;)

Regards...
