Title: My 1965 Sheridan RE-build UPDATE
Post by: cwlongshot on April 18, 2013, 03:28:57 PM
(I posted this over a about a week on another board. I'm coping it to here. They are not a airgun board.  ::))

I have had one since I was a young boy... I lent it to a friend about 8-10 years ago and he dropped off the radar and disappeared...

I have acquired a 1965 model ''C'' as a replacement from a generous man I talk with on another board, only this one is pretty rough and doesn't work. (Didn't but just a overnight oil soak got it firing!) SO I am undertaking a complete rebuild and refinish. The re build part will be handled by Mac1 Air rifles. I shipped it out to him Back on The 4th of April. Tim says in about 10 weeks and I'll have it back with 900+fps and much more reliable functionality.

The wood I'll do my self. I will also install a but plate or rifle pad as the butt of the wood is water damaged too much to restore.

Here is what I am starting with...

First I fit a pad to the stock and sanded it completely with coarse paper, I began reshaping the grip with a file.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20Rilfes/Sheridan/B42CC7E4-57C2-45CE-9889-657D578FE303-1067-000001643527D8BC_zpsc314c679.jpg)

I used a Marlin rifle pad. I chopped about 1/4'' off the stock and added the pad.

Ill post pics of the re shaping and progress with the sanding then steel wool.

I finished sanding the stocks. I started with 80grit paper to take off the remaining finish and sand out a couple imperfections. Then I went to 100g, then 150g finally twice with 220g. Wetting with damp cloth in between. These stocks are HARD and I actually saw more material removed with the finer grits. I then took a rasp to the pistol grip. Re shaping the toe and grip cap. Mostly defining them better and then I slimmed the grip for my larger hands.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20Rilfes/Sheridan/9EFBA25D-1C19-47C6-8A0F-78B4E4D2E76F-1810-000002979EE51CF2_zpsdb19549d.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20Rilfes/Sheridan/89816930-A6F3-4ED2-8811-BA588C25980D-2164-000002BE7E59E00C_zpsc63e713c.jpg)

Suttle changes, but should show some of the nuances of the grain better as well as feel better in the hand.

I also finished the forend. I had a little filling to do as I did on the butt. Unfortunately both will show as they didn't take the finish as well or the same as surrounding wood did. BUT they are what I like to call ''character'' marks.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20Rilfes/Sheridan/1B84BA4F-93B2-425A-9C22-F369D2906531-2164-000002BE84B418FA_zpsf8aba446.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/CWLONGSHOT/Temp%20stuff/sporting%20pics/Air%20Rilfes/Sheridan/68887F60-3A05-4A25-8FB3-9197206E7955-2164-000002BE88D5FC2C_zps0833d963.jpg)

Here is the butt after a wipe down with water to ''whisker'' the wood.

Here is both ready for finish.

I hit the pump/fore stock with Dark Walnut stain. Then rubbed it warm, with clean cloth to remove excess. I think its a pretty good match, at least I should be closer then it was... (Guess I forgot to snap a pic.)

Tomorrow one last rub down with 000 wool and then first coats of tongue oil.

I already steel ''wooled'' the stock this AM back to nearly bear wood and its now drying. I hope to get fourth coat on late this afternoon. But the wood is looking better and better with each coat. Tomorrow ill will it back to wood again then give it another coat. At that point ill give it a couple days to "harden up" and decide if I want more coats. Generally I like oil finish, this is new can of finish and seems glossy to me. Maybe because the stocks are so dense and right grained.

OK here is what I had first thing this AM. (This is with to coats)

Im filling in the grain little by little...

I ''wooled'' it down almost to wood..

I managed to get one last coat today before I had to leave. Tomorrow AM I'll start all over again.

I got two more coats on yesterday. Each one was willed in between. Each time I take a little less off. I'm really just building the base and filling in what ever grain I could not sand out. It's looking fabulous!

Had to come in here early this AM. Got the problem rectified now I have a bit of time till shift change so I steel wooled them one more time. I was thinking of quitting but I found two spots I did not like. One drip and one dull spot? So at least one more coat today. It's drying now.  No pics as I'm finding the indoor lighting pics are showing the wood too dark or darker the. It truly is. Pics are not doing real justice but at least outside in good sunlight they start to show some of the depth in getting.

I had a Sheridan Blue Streak as a young boy, growing up. Many years later, I lent it to a "friend" who has since moved away and completely dripped off the grid! Occasional and repeated eMails to last address have gone unanswered...

CW

UNTIL NOW...

Well well... Last night, I'm checking emails and I see one i do not recognize. as I read thru it turns out to be from the fello who borrowed my original Sheridan back around 2003/4!!!

Says something about having moved and the rifle was in storage and apologies he forgot and lost track yada yada yada... Long email shortened; he is fairly certain he knows where the rifle is and should be able to get to it this weekend and ship it back to me next week!!!

Now after all this time, I'm not holding my breath. BUT the thought of having the old girl back is appealing to me!

I'm into the waiting game on the project Sheridan. I should see it back mid June. The stocks are "hardening" and maybe this weekend I will buff off the gloss to the matte finish I prefer. I will post pics if/when I do.

I also got a email from pyramid air saying a couple of my back ordered pellet tins have been shipped as well. Seems I'm 5MM pellet rich at the moment. :)

Nice work CW--those old Sheridans and Benjis had some really nice wood.  Once you get it steroided it will be one beautiful beast.  Hope you get your old one back too.

thanks allot for the compliments guys!!!

I enjoy refinishing old stocks and working with wood. It's amazing the beauty that can be "brought out" with elbow grease and oil finishes.

The stock was actually finished to the poit of my last picture about two weeks ago now. It should be completely hard to the point I can give it a rub down to take off the gloss sheen. The grain is nearly 100% filled in so its nearly glass smooth.

As for the original '76 Sheridan. I'm remaining hopeful, but I must say he surely doesn't seem to motivated to return this to me. I could read into that any number of ways. But in remembering his personality, he was always laid back and easy going... So I'm Tring to be patient. (I must admit, its not one of my strong points, under the circumstances.) another email apologized for the delay and said he had put it in storage and had not yet "put his hands on it" AND he will be away until Tuesday the 23d. He should locate it after then and hopefully ship by next weekend.

CW, this is awesome...

I have to do my Blue Demon, I already got it back from Timmy and it has taken a TreeRat too....

I haven't done a stock since I was in Highschool building Muzzle loaders in my dad's basement...

This looks like something I am going to do after I get the yard cleaned up and the pool open so the wife won't have anything to complain about for a little while...

ps: my order from PA for .20 and .177 should be here anyday....

Yea like OTC said, its a private album...  When you look at your pics in PB, If you would like a pic to show up, Copy the ''IMG code'' tab and PASTE in your posting. Then it will show in your posting.

I WOULD  like to see!!!  ;D ;D ;D

THANKS guys for the compliments!!!  :-* :-*

I like working with walnut! I am not real fond of the glossy finish personally. ;) I like a dull or oiled look. Simular to how the wood looked before I applied anything and whiskered it one last time..

I need to buff it out with some pumice or some such to ''knock down'' that gloss.

You can count of finished pic's sometime in June, when I get the workings back from our friend Tim.  ;D ;D ;D

Looks good. I'm going to powder coat my trigger guard. last time I had a small item to powder coat they just put in with their next batch of parts to be coated. I think they only charged me about 10 bucks or less.

Hi cwlongshot,

Where did you get the butt plate/pad? I'm in the process of getting a 342 that's similar to your Sheridan and I would like to add a butt plate like the one you have or even a little thicker to extend the stock after I cut it.

That's some nice looking work I know you are going to love it when you get it back from MAC1.

Its a factory Marlin pad. I pulled it off one of my guns probably when I added a ''real'' pad. ::)

Tonight I received another email from my friend tonight... (after emailing him again over the weekend  :o )

GREAT NEWS... HE HAS FOUND THE SHERIDAN!!!  WOOHOO!!!

I must admit, he is not very forthcoming with updates... Seems I need to PRY responses out of him.  ::) ::) :o BUT its looking more like I'll get my rifle back!! He said its a busy week for him, but he will ''try'' to get it shipped out to me. Mighty nice guy... I would not want him to put him  out.  :P :P :P ;)

Long Story Short, he still dosen't even have the gun! The story deepens.. apparently he LENT it to a friend! Now he says, he has been sick and has not had the chance. But said he would ''try'' to go and get over to get it Friday nite or Saturday and then, he would ''try'' to ship it out Saturday.
Its becoming more and more apparent, I am only getting ''lip service''. I don't want to admit to my self, what I think is coming next.

LOL no problem UM!  ;) ;)

I have been keeping it updated, (fairly well) I started a new thread on the 1982 Sheridan.  ::)

Go here and read up!  ;) ;) http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=47617.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=47617.0)

Yup, I DID get the ''long lost loaned out'' 1982 Sheridan back!!

Timmy (MAC1) still has the 1965. When I sent it off to him he figured I would have it finished in mid June.

Yesterday, I put the rebuild parts (From MAC1)  in and got it all back together... BUT Its still got a leak in the check valve. I'm not really interested in opening it back up after the almost SEVEN hours I spent putting it together.  :o :o :o :( :-[ :-[ :-[

It shoots and will hold air but leaks just a bit as I open the pump. I am pretty sure the lil spring is the culprit. I also had a ''extra'' part!!  :o :o

I am sure Tim will know what I did wrong and what the extra part is.  ::) ::) ;D ;)

This is a quote form Tim at MAC1 its about a 22 but the 20 is just behind it in power and the 177 is just a bit behind the 20 is FPE ##s.

I double the valve capacity of the gun but it is still limited by the length of the factory barrel. The more you pump the more energy it can make provided the pellet hasn't departed. This means the only way to get the power these guns are capable of is to use heavier than average to extremely heavy ammo.
That will not result in an impressive velocity figure but if you understand energy it is an impressive 25 fpe with a Heavy 28.5 grain pellet.
Pump Pnuematic, CO2 and PCP guns will generally yield higher power levels with the heavier pellets. Thiose same poellets generally have a better BC than FAST lead. So when you have a gun that shoots higher BC pellets at higher Energy than low BC pellets the Heavies should be the obvious choice and moreso the farther you try to reach out.
Going slower has trajectory issues associated with the speed but the worse the conditions become the better the heavier choice will be for groups.
Speed is entirely overated.
Resistance goes up @ the square of the velocity so it is very difficult to get better results by going too fast.
Merchandising has guys telling me they need 1000 fps in .22 but I know better and I say you are wrong. 900 is way better with some real mass going downrange. I'm a shooter and I know what works. Speed doesn't do anything except sell ignorant people the wrong caliber. It is after all the number so many can get behind but it is a function of both speed and mass that has the downrange desired effect.
The use of extremely light projectals is idiotic and I will not be a party to quoting speeds with non-lead projectals.
Salesman do that stuff based on the fact that implied you need speed or you just can't get it up.
So the bottom line is Speed will be impressive when you shoot plastic tiny pellets out of springers or PCP's but the plasticpellets don't actually do anything except generate savage chrono data. At the actual target the are effectively confetti.

Pumps make POWER. SPEED don't matter!

Wow! 14 pumps! I thought it was max 8 or 10 pumps. I had no idea that his steroid work would allow that many pumps.

Timmy recommended the 13.7 JSB domes for mine and they are devastating.....

I did a couple of shots over the chrony at the fun shoot and was getting in the mid 600's with 8 pumps and over 800 with 14 pumps...

I want to say that those numbers sound almost unbelievable

I know whats quoted, 25-26 FPE.. that caught my attention!

14 is the max with the steroid kit, without it is 8, but it is a bear to get there....

We were doing it in teams, one person would pump to about 8~9 then another would take it to 14, only shot it a couple of times at that level.

when I get my actual Chrony I will put up some actual numbers at different pumps and let yall know...

The UPS man was on time and timely!!

She looks GREAT Tim did a great job the gun looks GREAT!! I ran it down to the shop and installed the butt and forend. Then put up a new target and fired about a dozen pellets. Most at 6-7 pumps and a nickle sized group with FFT pellets. I found my Eunjins and fires two shots at 14 pumps, drilled the center and where touching at 15 feet. I did have air left in the valve and fired off a FFT at what seemed like 4-5 pumps velocity. WOW it surely seems to have some steam!!

Here is some eye candy...  This is right after unwrapping. Came encapsulated in bubble wrap. Nice and secure.

I asked Tim to install a peep too.

Sure looks very nice. So for the max FPE a heavy pellet is recommended, I guess your Eunjins would be giving you the highest FPE? Now it is just "play" time.

Yes the Eunjins are the pellet of choice. First shots show much promice at least up close.

Busy time for me, VK coming first week in August. May bring the Dan along, Unsure. Been working allot and neglecting home jobs. Now I have one weekend to finish that up so no shooting for me! ;)

I'm hoping to see 700fps from this Dan with a Eungin pellet.

How heavy is a .20cal Eun Jin? I don't see them at PA.
My Theoben Crow Mag in 22 cal will spit out a Eun Jin at 25fpe but JSB 15.8 gr will zip out at a little over 30fpe. The JSB's are also way more accurate.
I need to get me a tin of .20 cal Eun Jin's to try them out.

Geez, now I need more pellets? :o

I wonder why the first two pellet columns have less fps at 14 pumps vs 5 pumps
and then the last two pellet column show a gain of fps but not a lot.
Maybe the figures won't shine unless you test "heavy" pellets.
Note to myself " I need to order some Eun Jin today so I can make sure to have some on hand when I get my SilverStreak back from Mac1"

The first three columns were all at Five pumps for ten shots

The last one was the only one I did the stacking pumps to get an idea of how much speed and power each pump would add...

Ahh - now it makes sense. More important is how is the accuracy. Increasing the velocity shouldnt change your group size, correct?

Each of the three shot sub 1" groups at 10 yards with the stock sights, the pellets did climb some as the pumps and fps went up....
