Title: GX CS4, is it really quiet?
Post by: HunterWhite on November 25, 2024, 11:13:08 PM
I have wanted a compressor for years. I finally bought a GX CS4 compressor.  I put distilled water, about  7 fluid ounces, turned it on to let water circulate,  then 5 more for a total of 12 fluid ounces.

I connected the fill whip to my 80 cubic foot scuba tank. It had about 2400 psi.

I opened the bleed valve and started the compressor. After 15 or 20 seconds I closed the bleed valve.

It isn't that noisy, but it whizzes like a star wars fazer slowed down. It also has a rhythmic thud, and a  metalic clanking sound.
I was expecting it to purr like a kitten. It really doesn't sound very refined to me.

I let it run to see if it was going to fail. It ran about 1 hour and 15 minutes to top up my scuba tank. Does that sound right?

If you have aGX CS4 let me know if yours makes these noises, and if it should take over an hour to top up a scuba tank.

Thanks

I only have a smaller cheaper style AC/DC powered pump. With the low wattage motors (1/2 HP or smaller) these compressors are never going to be fast. Mine makes significantly LESS NOISE than a 220VAC YongHeng but it is FAR from quiet. The high speed fan noise alone is impressive :-(

If yours is similar to this model...

... then hours to fill 80 ft^3 scuba tank (~11 liters) seems about normal.

I have a CS4, have had it for over a year and it's still running strong.  Those sounds you describe sound about right and fill time is on par with mine as well.  They are slow, but that's what keeps the heat down and makes them more reliable than the faster ones.  I put a temp gauge on mine and it never gets above a low grade fever temp!   ;D

Ain't those things supposed to be ran on run - cool down sessions? Maybe a 20/20 or something like that?

The smaller ones do, like the CS3 and below.  The CS4 has a claimed 5 hour run cycle.  I'm not so sure I would run mine for a full 5 hours straight filling something!  I'm not even sure what I could fill that would require a 5 hour run time?  I would think most tanks used for airguns could probably be filled in half that time.

Paul, thank you,  your rabbit has moved since yesterday!

Its reassuring to know. It ran over an hour and water temperature was no warmer than bath water. That clanking sound was worrisome.

Bill, thank you.  Most of the smaller ones do need cool down cycles. Only the Yong Hong could run continuously because it has water cooling.  The shoebox could run continuously at a slow pace. The CS4 has water cooling, also. I paid extra for that feature over the cs1, 2 and 3. I will now gift the scuba to my brother,  I will keep a small 100 cubic inch guppy tank from Joe B. We live close enough that I can fill his tank when I visit. I will let it run while we shoot some targets.

You pretty much described how my CS4-I sounds, the fans make much more noise than the pump itself. Any that I have heard run in videos sound about the same.

Thanks Allen. It is reassuring to know that this is normal. It sounds like it's about to throw a rod.

It Seems to me being a Shoe Box F10 owner, the GX CS4 is everything the Shoe Box should of been in the first place.

I never had a shoebox, but I thought that they were pretty cool. It would have been nice to have a first stage incorporated into the later models.

Guys
I am looking for a new compressor, my old F-10 give up the ghost.
Is this CS-4 quieter than the SB? The better half hates it's sound when I run it.

There don't seem to be much talk about the CS-4 as compared to the other ones,
that I have found so far.

I am starting to like the sound of the 12v charging, would charge off my Toy PU plug in,
in the rear tailgate, which would be perfect for cleaning out the sage bunnies in the hay fields, 100+ per night is not uncommon.

Does anyone fill the 13/3000 type of bottles with the CS-4?

If I am under standing this CS-4, correctly,
you also DON'T need to supply additional air from a standard air compressor like the F-10?

Your thoughts and suggestions....
Tia

Don.. Talk to Paul aka Rat Sniper. He has had one for a few months now and really likes it. When he upgraded I bought his CS3 from him and it does a great job of filling my guns directly.

Thanks Bill
I finally found his post on AGN about the CS4, my search dog is OLD......and tired.

And I have a question on it, I notice that there are 4 feet on the one side of this compressor,
Does that mean it can operate lying flat and or upright?
From all the photo's shown, I don't think so...

So far I have not found any info on this aspect, of operation.
I'll have a email to CS with this info when they are back on line from their vacation.
Tia,

Tia,
I'm afraid I can't honestly answer that.. maybe someone that owns one will chime in.

Tia,

Hey Don, I'm just now seeing this and will do my best to answer your questions.  As far as how loud it is, I've never owned a shoebox or even seen one operating, so I can't really give you a decisive answer there, but I will say it's quieter than my Hill EC3000 and one of it's selling points was how quiet it is.  It's definately the quietest I own or have owned, and I've been through a few of them!  It's also holding up much better than the others as well.

It can be operated upright or on its side, the water tank is sealed, so it won't leak.  You will have to have it upright to add coolant, but once the cap is closed, it's sealed and can be placed on t's side.

I have Serpent Arms branded version. I can say it is by far quieter than the Shoe Box F10 and any other compressors out there. Fills guns fast, tanks are almost not needed. But I have topped of my 90 ci and 3 l bottles with ease. I run 50/50 anti freeze in mine as it gets a bit chilly here sometimes :)

For you guys/gals that have the GX CS4 compressor,

What would the average time be to fill a 13ci/3000 gun bottle and 48ci/3000 psi small tank,
to 3000 psi?
